DESC:
FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE:
The present disclosure relates to an agrochemical composition, and in particular, a herbicidal composition comprising a PS II photosynthesis inhibitor herbicide and an acetolactate synthase inhibitor herbicide. More particularly, the present disclosure relates to a herbicidal composition comprising an anilide herbicide and a pyrimidinylsulfonylurea herbicide. The present disclosure also relates to a process for preparation of the herbicidal composition and a method for controlling weeds using the same thereof.

BACKGROUND OF THE DISCLOSURE:
Herbicides are chemical substances, which are used to specifically control the weeds. The mode of action for herbicides is a biochemical or physical mechanism, which it uses to control unwanted plants or weeds. Most herbicides control unwanted plants or weeds by disrupting or altering one or more of the metabolic processes of plants. However, there are certain species of unwanted plants/weeds or groups of unwanted plants/weeds, which are not susceptible to certain herbicides. This may be because either the herbicides use different biochemical pathways, or the herbicides have slightly different enzymes. Therefore, herbicides are often chosen for use based on their mode of action.

Furthermore, compositions containing herbicides have been used for decades for weed control, however, they have some disadvantages. They have none/insufficient herbicidal activity against specific harmful/unwanted plants, the spectrum of harmful/unwanted plants which can be controlled with the herbicides is not broad enough, the selectivity of herbicides in and the compatibility with crops is too low, thereby causing unwanted damage and/or unwanted reduced harvest yields of the crops, the initial herbicidal activity is not acceptable or not strong enough and/or the herbicidal activity does not last long enough. For these reasons, there is a constant need to develop herbicidal combinations which overcome the aforementioned disadvantages.

The use of herbicidal combinations is a widespread and documented practice in the agricultural community. Herbicidal combinations offer significant advantages over individual applications including improved and extended weed control, reduced herbicide application rates and reduced costs, shorter contact times for improved results, less stringent use restrictions, improved selectivity, improved spectrum of weed control, and reduced residue problems. However, choice of inactive ingredients is critical in such combinations as many times, addition of an active ingredient to a composition of another single active ingredient further aggravates the stability problems.

Propanil is an anilide herbicide having chemical name 3',4'-dichloropropionanilide, and is a widely used contact herbicide. However, propanil is prone to hydrolysis in addition to having a relatively low melting point. The formation of a paste containing water may lead to further difficulties in stability during processing if the energy input during the paste formation is too high. Thus, there are several constraints on the inactive ingredients that could be used for preparing the granules of propanil.

Propyrisulfuron is a pyrimidinylsulfonylurea herbicide having chemical name 1-(2-chloro-6-propylimidazo[1,2-b]pyridazin-3-ylsulfonyl)-3-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl)urea. Propyrisulfuron is used as a rice herbicide to control annual and perennial paddy weeds, including Echinochloa spp., sedges and broadleaf weeds. Propyrisulfuron shows safer profiles for human health and the environment.

Patent application CN106489972A discloses a herbicidal composition containing promazine sulfometuron methyl and propanil as active ingredients in a weight ratio of 1:1 to 1:100. The composition may also comprise an agrochemically active compound (propyrisulfuron). Further, the application fails to disclose the aspect dealing with improved stability and suspensibility of compositions comprising propanil and propyrisulfuron.

PCT publication WO2016116797A1 discloses a composition comprising modified crystalline propanil and at least another pesticide (propyrisulfuron). However, the publication fails to disclose the aspect dealing with improved stability and suspensibility of the composition.

The inventors of the present disclosure have found that the known compositions comprising propanil in combination with propyrisulfuron suffer from poor suspensibility and often fail the wet sieve test as well as these compositions have low shelf life. These products display a considerable amount of sedimentation with time, often forming hard rock-type lumps at the bottom of the storage containers. The increased sedimentation further aggravates the problem of nozzle clogging during the spraying application by farmers. As a result, it has been observed that when such a composition is prepared as a diluted liquid or a solution to be sprayed, the same does not remain sprayable after the passage of a certain amount of time because of the high insoluble content. This can sometimes lead to a farmer rejecting an otherwise useful product, which is certainly undesirable.

There thus remains a need for development of stable herbicidal compositions comprising propanil and propyrisulfuron, preferably in its free acid form, which address the aforementioned challenges and also do not affect the efficacy associated with the herbicidal compositions.

As used herein, the term “post-emergence” refers to the time point after seedlings emerge from the ground. When any herbicide is applied at post-emergence stage, it prevents growth of the germinated weed seedlings.

As used herein “kraft-lignosulfonate” refers to low molecular weight dispersing agent, with a low degree of sulfonation. It is as a primary dispersant in dry and water-based agricultural chemicals and in disperses dyestuff formulations. Kraft lignosulfonate is sodium lignosulfonate with a degree of sulfonation of 0.5.

While developing a water-dispersible granule (WG or WDG) comprising an anilide herbicide and a pyrimidinylsulfonylurea herbicide, it was surprisingly found by the inventors of the present disclosure that the integrity of WDG can be maintained using a combination of a wetting agent and a dispersing agent. The combination of a wetting agent and a dispersing agent in a particular ratio facilitates the WDG formation. The selected combination of the wetting agent and dispersing agent in a selective weight ratio is found to successfully retain the integrity of the actives in the formulation which results in greater suspensibility and dispersibility as well as improved wet sieve retention.

EXAMPLES:
Example 1: Propanil and Propyrisulfuron WDG composition
The agrochemical composition of the present invention was formulated as a water-dispersible granule (WG or WDG).
Ingredients Quantity (% w/w)
Propanil 60.0 to 62.5
Propyrisulfuron 2.0 to 2.15
Sodium lauryl sulfate 2.5 to 3.5
Potassium polycarboxylate 6.8 to 7.5
Kraft-lignosulfonate 2.0 to 3.0
Kaolin Q.S.
Total 100

Process:
Propanil was mixed with propyrisulfuron, alkyl sulfate salt (sodium lauryl sulfate), polycarboxylate dispersant (potassium polycarboxylate) and at least one agrochemically acceptable excipient to obtain a mixture. The mixture was milled, and a dough was prepared. The dough was extruded to obtain granules. The obtained granules were dried at a temperature range of about 45°C to about -50°C to obtain the agrochemical composition.

Examples 2-5: Suspensibility and Wet Sieve Retention Study
A suspensibility and wet sieve retention study of the compositions in Examples 2-5 was performed and the results have been tabulated in Table 1.

From the results of Table 1, it was observed that Examples 2 and 5 had a combination of an alkyl sulfate salt (sodium lauryl sulfate) and a polycarboxylate dispersant (potassium polycarboxylate). Compositions from both these examples exhibited more than 75% w/w suspensibility and less than 0.1% w/w wet sieve retention when checked according CIPAC guideline MT 184 and CIPAC guideline MT 185, respectively. Compositions from Examples 3 and 4 did not have combination of an alkyl sulfate salt (sodium lauryl sulfate) and a polycarboxylate dispersant (potassium polycarboxylate), and they did not have desired properties i.e., both more than 75% w/w suspensibility and less than 0.1% w/w wet sieve retention when checked according CIPAC guideline MT 184 and CIPAC guideline MT 185, respectively.

Therefore, sodium lauryl sulfate is essential for wet sieve and potassium polycarboxylate is essential for suspension and dispersion. Thus, it is clear from the suspensibility and wet sieve retention parameters study that combination of an alkyl sulfate salt and a polycarboxylate dispersant is necessary for the compositions of propanil and propyrisulfuron to exhibit desired suspensibility and wet sieve retention.

Example 6: Stability at AHS conditions
The water dispersible granule composition as disclosed in Example 1 was evaluated for its stability. The stability of the said composition was determined under accelerated heat stability (AHS) conditions for about 14 days at about 54°C and has been disclosed in Table 2.
Table 2: Stability study
Sr. No. Ingredients 0 day 14 days, AHS
(% w/w) (% w/w)
1 Propanil 61.29 61
2 Propyrisulfuron 2.1 2
3 Suspensibility (Propanil) 89.49 89.11
4 Suspensibility (Propyrisulfuron) 99.2 98.38
5 Wet Sieve Retention on 200 BSS 0.05 0.05

There was no significant change either in the physical or chemical property of the composition, i.e., active ingredient content, wet sieve test, and suspensibility, after accelerated storage for a period of 14 days at 54 ± 2°C.

Example 7: Real time data for stability study
The water dispersible granule composition as disclosed in Example 1 was evaluated for its stability. The stability of the said composition was determined for 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30 months and has been disclosed in Table 3.
Table 3: Stability study
Sr. No. Ingredients 0 day 6 months 12 months 18 months 24 months 30 months
(% w/w)
1 Propanil 61.29 61.2 61.1 60.95 60.85 60.55
