[0003] Different modes of the invention are disclosed in detail in the description and illustrated in the accompanying drawing:
[0004] Figure 1 illustrates a schematic diagram of a high pressure fuel pump used in combination with a fuel control unit.
Detailed description of the embodiments
[0005] A high pressure fuel pump 10 is described. The high pressure fuel pump 10 comprises a housing 12 and a fuel control unit 14 integrated with the high pressure fuel pump 10 such that the fuel control unit 14 is secured to the housing 12 of the high pressure fuel pump 10.
[0006] Figure 1 illustrates a schematic diagram of a high pressure fuel pump 10 used in combination with a fuel control unit 14. The high pressure fuel pump 10 includes a housing 12. A fuel control unit 14 is integrated in the high pressure fuel pump 10. More specifically, the fuel control unit 14 is integrated in the high pressure fuel pump 10 such that the fuel control unit 14 is secured to the housing 12 of the high pressure fuel pump 10. The fuel control unit 14 is secured to the housing 12 of the high pressure fuel pump 10 such that the fuel control unit 14 forms an integrated assembly with the housing 12 of the high pressure fuel pump 10.
[0007] The housing 12 of the high pressure fuel pump 10 comprises a first fuel passageway 16. The first fuel passageway 16 is secured to the housing 12 of the high pressure fuel pump 10 such that fuel is channelled within the housing 12 of the high pressure fuel pump 10 via the first fuel passageway 16 in order to facilitate cooling the housing 12 of the high pressure fuel pump 10. The first fuel passageway 16 circumscribes around the housing 12 of the high pressure fuel pump 10 such that the fuel that is channelled through the first fuel passageway 16 is used to cool the entire portion of the housing 12 of the high pressure fuel pump 10.
[0008] The first fuel passageway 16 extends into the fuel control unit 14 such that the first fuel passageway 16 is secured to the housing of the fuel control unit 14. From the fuel control unit 14, a portion of the fuel is channelled back to the fuel tank via the outlet 18 of the high pressure fuel pump 10. From the first fuel passageway 16 that is secured to the fuel control unit 14, the remaining portion of metered fuel that is not channelled to the outlet 18 of the high pressure fuel pump 10 is channelled to the fuel control unit 14 via a second fuel passageway that is in flow communication with the first fuel passageway 16. From the fuel control unit 14, a metered quantity of fuel is channelled to the pumping chamber of the high pressure fuel pump 10 from where it is compressed and delivered to a fuel injector.
[0009] A working of the high pressure fuel pump 10 is described as an example. Fuel is channeled from the low pressure fuel pump to the first fuel passageway 16 of the high pressure fuel pump 10. From the first fuel passageway 16, the pressurized fuel is supplied through the housing 12 of the high pressure fuel pump 10 where it is used to cool the housing 12 of the high pressure fuel pump 10. From the housing 12 of the high pressure fuel pump 10, the heated pressurized fuel is channeled to the outlet 18 of the high pressure fuel pump 10. The portion of the heated pressurized fuel that is channeled to the outlet 18 of the high pressure fuel pump 10 is delivered back to the fuel tank. The remaining portion of the heated pressurized fuel is channeled to the fuel control unit 14. The fuel control unit 14 comprises a traditional solenoid valve that allows the pressurized fuel to be metered and delivered to the pumping chamber of the high pressure fuel pump 10.
[0010] The fuel control unit 14 that is integrated with the housing 12 of the high pressure fuel pump 10 allows for fuel to be channeled through the fuel passageway 16, cool the housing 12 of the high pressure fuel pump 10, and then flow to the fuel control unit 14. As the fuel control unit 14 is downstream from the housing 12 of the high pressure fuel pump 10, the quantity of fuel that is channeled into the housing 12 of the high pressure fuel pump 10 can be higher than the quantity of fuel that is channeled to the fuel control unit 14, while the remaining fuel is discharged from the outlet 18 back to the fuel tank.
[0011] It must be understood that the embodiments explained in the above detailed description is only illustrative and does not limit the scope of this invention. The scope of this invention is limited only by the scope of the claims. Many modifications and changes in the embodiments aforementioned are envisaged and are within the scope of this invention.
