The present invention relates to development of JIG for alignment of steering gear
with tiller during ship building and the method for such alignment.
Background Art
Number of Indian Naval ships of different metals/materials were being built by
Garden reach ship builders and engineers ltd., out of which lot of plates/sections/stiffeners
will be cut with oxy acetylene flame and jointed by welding with different welding process as
part and process of ship building. Heay scantaling plates has to be welded so as to accumulate
navy equipments like actuator, welding of these plates is compulsory and in this process the
plates will be buckled this will give difficulties in allaignment of actuator seat with tiller on
post welding.
In conventional method :-
1. Acctuator seats are to be tacked in Starting position.
2. Pre heating of actuator seats.
3. Welding of Actuator seats on one side as per welding procedure.
4. Back gousing, grinding and Welding on the other side.
Object of lnvention
The principle object of the present invention is to manifest the alignment after welding
of actuator seats to tiller by arranging JIG.

Further object of invention is to manufacture the equipment which is simple to use,
easy to engage, easily dismantible and re usable.
Summary of Invention
To develop a special JIG arrangement for welding of actuator seat plates for alignment
of steering gear acutuator with tiller.
Brief Description wth the Accompanying Drawings
Fig. 1 illustrates the JIG arrangement for welding of actuator seat plates for alignment
of steering gear acutuator with tiller in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 illustrates the JIG including a pipe as tiller diameter and a handle in accordance
with the present invention.
Detailed Description
Welding and gascutting is a very common way of joining and cutting procedures in
shipbuilding. Buckling is a common phenomenon in ship at contructive stage as hat inputs
and welding is a repeated process in high thickness plates. Working ambiance in closed
spaces of ship like Steering gear compartment and equipment fitted rooms are very much
needed for workmen to produce quality work. In coventinol method high thickness plates
farming is very hard to remove the buckling which in return spoils the quality of the seat

and workmen cant be able to work up to their full extent because of very confined space,
here come the use of JIG as the buckling was completely avoided by checking after evry run
of welding and can be countered by changing the weld run on opposite side. By using JIG
mechanism run by run welding and changing sequence of the welding will give better results
which are acceptable for builders and end user.
The invention (as Shown in Fig. 1 and Fig.2) is a JIG arrangement for Welding of
actuator seat plates for alignment of steering gear acutuator with tiller.
By using JIG :-
1. Acctuator seats are to be tacked in Starting position.
2. Pre heating of actuator seats.
3. Place JIG in tiller place.
4. Welding of Actuator seats run by run on one side of the seat at once as per
welding procedure.
5. Check the rotation of the JIG, if it is rortating free then the welding sequence
is correct or the opposite side of the seat plates are to be welded to compensate
the buckling by heat input.
6. Back gou sing, grinding and Welding on the other side by repeatedly checking
the free movement of the JIG.
The Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 shows the typical special JIG arrangement for welding of actuator
seat plates for alignment of steering gear acutuator with tiller.


Advantages & Uses of the Invention
1. Helps to maintain the proper alignment of actuator with tiller of steering gear.
2. To reduce the distortion of plate during welding.
3. To help the control welding of actuator seats.
4. Helps to install the actuator easily.
5. Helps to reduce manpower.
Although the foregoing description of the present invention has been shown and
described with reference to particular embodiments and applications thereof, it has been
presented for purposes of illustration by way of examples and description and is not intended
to be exhaustive or to limit the invention to the particular embodiments and applications
disclosed. The particular embodiments and applications were chosen and described to provide
the best illustration of the principles of the invention and its practical application to thereby
enable one of ordinary skill in the art to utilize the invention in various embodiments and
with various modifications as are suited to the particular use contemplated.

We claim:
1. A JIG arrangement for use during steering gear assembly in ships comprising
of:
a Pipe with tiller Diameter;
a Handle for Pipe ;
wherein the said JIG is configured for alignment of actuator with tiller of steering
gear and reduce the distortion of plate during welding of actuator sheets.
2. The JIG arrangement as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the Welding of Actuator
seats is carried out run by run on one side of the seat at once.
3. The JIG arrangement as claimed in Claim 1, wherein under condition that the
rotation of the JIG, is free then the welding sequence is correct else the opposite side of the
seat plates are welded to compensate the buckling by heat input.
4. The JIG arrangement as claimed in Claim 1, wherein during the assembly the
Back gousing, grinding and Welding on the other side is checked by the free movement of
the JIG.
5. A process for JIG alignment of steering gear actuator with tiller employing the
JIG as claimed in preceding claim comprising the steps of:

tacking of the actuator seats in starting position;
pre heating of actuator seats;
placing the said JIG in tiller place;
welding the said actuator seats run by run on one side of the seat at once;
checking the rotation of the JIG;
wherein under condithion that the JIG is rotating free then the welding sequence is
correct else opposite side of the seat plates are welded to compensate the buckling by heat
input; and wherein back gousing, grinding and welding on the other side is done repeatedly
by checking the free movement of the said JIG.
