DESC:FIELD OF INVENTION:
[0001] The present invention generally relates to a lapping tool. More particularly, the present invention relates to a lapping tool that can improve the geometrical accuracies of cylindrical jobs and reduce the cycle time of job manufacturing.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
[0002] In recent years, high-quality and high-precision products are in demand, and production technology and machine tools are also being investigated. Especially when producing cylindrical products, they have to go through many processing steps using different types of machines, such as lathe turning, grinding, and polishing processes which took a long processing time.
[0003] Lapping is defined as the cutting process with loose abrasive grains dispersed in the paste, guided by a lapping tool with non-directional parts. Nowadays, the manufacturing process requires very high machining precision for machine parts and tools. The lapping process is mainly used for the final improvement of geometrical accuracy, including cylindricity, circularity, and straightness.
[0004] The machining of any cylindrical component is generally done in two stages first in the lathe machine and thereafter in the grinding machine for meeting close tolerances. Both of these machines have their specialties as well as limitations. For example, the lathe machine is the fastest but cannot meet very close tolerances while on another hand; the grinding machine is far more accurate but very slow in production. Additionally, doing the job on two machines doubles the setting time which delays the jobs further. No such method is available in the art that can perform geometrical correction & superfinishing operations on a lathe machine.
[0005] The US Patent US20210060724A1 discloses lapping tools are provided that include at least one angled feature that forms at least one surface angle with the lapping surface. In some examples, angled features may include a first surface angle and a second surface angle. Each surface angle of the angled feature is configured to retain abrasive grit and provide a desired type of finish.
[0006] The above-mentioned prior art focuses on specific finish types and angles that might limit its applicability to a narrower range of workpiece geometries. The prior art does not address the adaptability to different diameters or the ability to complete jobs in a single lathe machine setting.
[0007] To overcome the aforesaid problem, a novel tool is introduced herein.
