Abstract: ABSTRACT A LID PORTION AND AN ENERGY STORAGE CELL COMPRISING THE LID PORTION The disclosed subject matter pertains to a lid portion of an energy storage cell and an energy storage cell incorporating the same. The lid portion includes a first surface to be contacted with one of a first end and a second end of the energy storage cell and a second surface opposite to the first surface. The second surface has a notch shaped depression forming a pattern. The depression comprises a plurality of steps extending from the second surface to a pre-defined depth into the depression along the walls of the depression. When the pressure inside the energy storage cell increases beyond a threshold pressure, the pattern formed on the second surface opens up to release the excess gases from the energy storage cell. <>
