A Locking Device

Abstract: A present disclosure relates to a locking device (100) for a vehicle. The locking device comprises a housing (1), a first body (2), a second body (4), and a spring (5). The first body and the second body are movably disposed within the housing. The first body and the second body are coaxially mounted to each other. The spring is enclosed the first body and is positioned between an upper portion of the first body and a proximal end of the second body to energize the second body. The first body comprises a pin (3) removably disposed on a lower portion of the first body and extended radially outwards from a centre axis of the first body. Further, the second body comprises a cut-out portion (13) configured to receive the pin of the first body. The second body comprises a locking member (14) defined on a distal end of the locking member.

Specification

The present disclosure generally relates to the field of automobiles. Particularly, but not exclusively, the present disclosure relates to a locking device that is configured to lock or unlock an assembly of the vehicles such as seat assembly, or a glove box assembly, and the like.
BACKGROUND OF THE DISCLOSURE
[002] The information in this section merely provides background information related to the present disclosure and may not constitute prior art(s) for the present disclosure.
[003] Vehicles, but not limited to, such as two-wheelers or three-wheelers are equipped with various locking systems for different assemblies of the vehicle. These locking systems may be a handlebar lock, a seat lock, a wheel lock etc. The primary function of the locking systems is to lock or unlock the respective assembly of the vehicle when desired by a user.
[004] Typically, the locking systems are provided with an actuation unit and a latch set. The actuation unit actuates the latch set based on the user input to perform an unlocking operation. The actuation unit comprises a housing, a barrel, and a cam. The barrel is housed by the housing. The barrel has an upper end and a lower end. The barrel is provided with a keyhole at the upper end. The cam is provided at the lower end of the barrel. The cam is rotatable with the rotational motion of the barrel upon actuation by means of a key.
[005] The latch set has a latch that is located adjacent to the cam of the actuation unit so that the cam can be engaged with the latch upon actuation of the key. The latch has an irregular shape that defines multiple ends to perform multiple functions. For example, one end of the latch is configured to couple with the cam of the actuation unit, a second end of the latch has a cut-out to receive a hook of the assembly (for example, seat or glove box) and the other ends are biased with a biasing member for constantly applying biasing force on the latch in order to keep the vehicle the seat or the glove box in locking condition. However, one major shortcoming associated with conventional locking systems is that these locking systems require a large space in the vehicle. This increases constraints to design the other different aspects of the vehicle.

[006] It is also experienced that the conventional locking systems do not provide a pleasant feel to the user while operating the key for unlocking operation. Further, the conventional locking systems have a large number of parts that has more wear and tear, thereby the shelf life of these locking systems is less. Furthermore, the manufacturing of such locking systems is complex, thus it incurs more costs.
[007] The present disclosure is directed to overcome one or more limitations stated above or any other limitations associated with the prior art.
SUMMARY OF THE DISCLOSURE
[008] The one or more shortcomings of the prior art are overcome by the system/assembly as claimed, and additional advantages are provided through the provision of the system/assembly/method as claimed in the present disclosure. Additional features and advantages are realized through the techniques of the present disclosure. Other embodiments and aspects of the disclosure are described in detail herein and are considered a part of the claimed disclosure.
[009] In one non-limiting embodiment of the present disclosure, a locking device for a vehicle is disclosed. The locking device comprises a housing, a first body, a second body, and a spring. The first body and the second body are movably disposed within the housing. The first body and the second body are coaxially mounted to each other. The spring is enclosed the first body and positioned between an upper portion of the first body and a proximal end of the second body to energize the second body. The first body comprises a pin removably disposed on a lower portion of the first body and extended radially outwards from a centre axis of the first body. Further, the second body comprises a cut-out portion configured to receive the pin of the first body. The second body is actuated by the pin to convert a rotational motion of the first body into a reciprocating motion of the second body for an unlocking operation of the locking device. Furthermore, the second body comprises a locking member defined on a distal end of the locking member. The locking member is configured to receive and hold a hook for a locking operation of the locking device.
[010] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the cut-out portion comprises a triangular-shaped profile defined at periphery of the cut-out portion.

[Oil] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the triangular-shaped profile has a first corner, a second corner, and a third corner.
[012] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the pin is positioned at the first corner or the second corner of the triangular-shaped profile for the locking operation of the locking device.
[013] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the pin is positioned at the third corner of the triangular-shaped profile for the unlocking operation of the locking device.
[014] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the locking member comprises an inclined surface, a base surface, and a side flat surface.
[015] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the inclined surface extends downwards rearwards from a periphery of the second body, the base surface extends rearwards from an end of the inclined surface, and the side flat surface extends in an upright direction from an end of the base surface, wherein the hook is received at the inclined surface and held against a face of the side flat surface for the locking operation of the locking device.
[016] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the pin is inserted in a hole defined in the lower portion of the first body.
[017] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the second body has an extended portion movably configured in a slot formed at the housing to prevent rotational movement of the second body.
[018] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the first body comprises a keyhole defined in the upper portion of the first body to receive a key.
[019] It is to be understood that the aspects and embodiments of the disclosure described above may be used in any combination with each other. Several of the aspects

and embodiments may be combined together to form a further embodiment of the disclosure.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[034] While the disclosure is susceptible to various modifications and alternative forms, specific embodiments thereof have been shown by way of example in the Figures and are described in detail below. However, it should be understood that it is not intended to limit the disclosure to the particular forms disclosed, on the contrary, the disclosure is to cover all modifications, equivalents, and alternatives falling within the scope of the disclosure as defined by the appended claims.
[035] Before describing detailed embodiments, it may be observed that the novelty and inventive step that are in accordance with the present disclosure resides in a locking device of a vehicle. It is to be noted that a person skilled in the art can be motivated from the present disclosure and modify the various constructions of the apparatus. However, such modification should be construed within the scope of the present disclosure. Accordingly, the drawings show only those specific details that are pertinent

to understanding the embodiments of the present disclosure so as not to obscure the disclosure with details that will be readily apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art having the benefit of the description herein.

[039] Embodiments of the disclosure disclose a locking device that is compact and ensures smooth locking and unlocking operations of an assembly (such as seat or glove box etc.) of the vehicle. Generally, locking systems are provided with an actuation unit and a latch set. The actuation unit is positioned is configured to actuate the latch set based on the user input to perform unlock operation. Such locking systems require a large space in the vehicle. This increases constraints to design the other different aspects of the vehicle. Further, the conventional locking systems do not provide a pleasant feel to the user while operating the key for unlocking operation.
[040] Accordingly, the present disclosure discloses a locking device for a vehicle. The locking device comprises a housing, a first body, a second body, and a spring. The first body and the second body are movably disposed within the housing. The first body and the second body are coaxially mounted to each other. The spring is enclosed the first body and is positioned between an upper portion of the first body and a proximal end of the second body to energize the second body. The first body comprises a pin

removably disposed on a lower portion of the first body and extended radially outwards from a centre axis of the first body. Further, the second body comprises a cut-out portion configured to receive the pin of the first body. The second body is actuated by the pin to convert a rotational motion of the first body into a reciprocating motion of the second body for an unlocking operation of the locking device. Furthermore, the second body comprises a locking member defined on a distal end of the locking member. The locking member is configured to receive and hold a hook for a locking operation of the locking device. The overall structure of the locking device is compact and ensures smooth locking and unlocking operations of an assembly of the vehicle. Such structure is easy to manufacture, thus incurs less cost in manufacuting of the said locking device.
[041] Reference will now be made to the exemplary embodiments of the disclosure, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Wherever possible, the same numerals will be used to refer to the same or like parts. Embodiments of the disclosure are described in the following paragraphs with reference to Figures 1 to 14. In Figures 1 to 14, the same element or elements which have the same functions are indicated by the same reference signs.
[042] Referring to Figures 1 to 14, a locking device (100), according to an embodiment of the present disclosure, is depicted. The locking device (100) is configured to lock or unlock an assembly of the vehicle. The assembly of the vehicle may include a seat assembly, a glove box assembly, a fuel tank assembly, a steering assembly, a wheel lock assembly etc. The locking device (100) may be utilized in any of the said assemblies of the vehicle for locking or unlocking operations, without limiting the scope of the present invention. For explanation purpose, the locking device (100) for the seat assembly of a two-wheeled vehicle is disclosed in the following paragraphs.
[043] Accordingly, the locking device (100) is configured to lock or unlock a seat of the vehicle. The locking device (100) may be positioned below the seat on a body of the vehicle. The locking device (100) is operated by means of a key, for selectively unlocking the seat of the vehicle. In an alternate embodiment, the locking device (100) may be operated by means of a knob or a remote control device etc., without limiting the scope of the present invention. For unlocking operation, the locking device (100) is

operated by the key and for locking operation a user can push the seat of the vehicle downwardly. The locking device (100) of the present application is an improved design that is compact, thereby acquiring less space in the vehicle.
[044] Referring to Figure 1, a locking device (100) is illustrated. The locking device (100) has a top portion that may be positioned outside the body of the vehicle and the rest of the portions of the locking device (100) may extend from the top portion of the locking device (100) inside the body of the vehicle. The locking device (100) receives the key at the top portion of the locking device (100) for selectively unlocking the seat of the vehicle.
[045] Referring to Figure 2, the locking device (100) comprises a housing (1), a second body (4), a pin (3), a first body (2), and a spring (5). The first body (2) and the second body (4) are movably disposed within the housing (1). The housing (1), the second body (4), the first body (2), and the spring (5) are mounted coaxially with each other. The housing (1) may have a hollow cylindrical shape. The housing (1) is configured to house the second body (4), the pin (3) and the first body (2), and the spring (5). The housing (1) is opened from both ends (a top end and a bottom end) to receive the aforementioned parts of the locking device (100). The top end of housing
(I) is extended radially outwards that is supported by the body of the vehicle so that the
top end of the housing (1) can be positioned outside of the vehicle.
[046] Referring to Figure 3, the first body (2) has an upper portion and a lower portion. The first body (2) comprises a keyhole (15). The keyhole (15) is defined at the upper portion of the first body (2). The keyhole (15) is configured to receive the key to operate the first body (2) for unlocking the seat of the vehicle. The first body (2) has a gasket
(II) that is provided at the upper portion of the first body (2) in order to provide a
sealing effect between the vehicle body and the locking device (100).
[047] In an embodiment, the first body (2) comprises a hole (3a) and a pin (3). The hole (3a) and the pin (3) are defined at the lower portion of the first body (2). The pin (3) is inserted into the hole. The pin (3) may be integrated with the rotor, without limiting the scope of the present invention. The pin (3) is extended radially outwards from a centre axis of the first body (2).

[048] The first body (2) may have a stepped portion that is formed at the upper portion of the first body (2). The stepped portion is formed to secure the spring (5) thereon, as shown in Figure 12. The spring (5) is disposed on the first body (2). The spring (5) has one end that rests at the stepped portion of the rotor and the other end of the spring (5) projects towards the pin (3) of the first body (2). The pin (3) may have different shapes such as cylindrical, square, rectangular, and the like, without limiting the scope of the present invention.
[049] In an embodiment, the second body (4) is movably disposed at the lower portion of the first body (2). The second body (4) comprises a cut-out portion (13). The cut-out portion (13) is configured to receive at least one end of the pin (3). The pin (3) may be partially accommodated in the cut-out portion (13) to secure the second body (4) on the first body (2), as shown in Figures 3 and 4. The second body (4) is actuated by the pin (3) to convert a rotational motion of the first body (2) into a reciprocating motion of the second body (4) for unlocking the locking device (100).
[050] In an embodiment, the cut-out portion (13) has a traingular-shaped profile. The traingular-shaped profile extends circumferentially in respect of the center axis of the second body (4), as shown in Figures 3 and 4. In an alternate embodiment, the traingular-shaped profile of the cut-out portion (13) may have an elliptical shape. The traingular-shaped profile of the cut-out portion (13) may also have a flat shape or a curved shape, without limiting the scope of the present invention.
[051] In an embodiment, the triangular-shaped profile has a first corner (4a), a second corner (4b), and a third corner (4c). The first corner (4a) and the second corner (4b) are connected to the third corner (4c) via paths that are followed by the pin (3), either while performing a locking operation or an unlocking operation. The pin (3) is positioned at the first corner (4a) or the second corner (4b) of the triangular-shaped profile for the locking operation of the locking device (100). The pin (3) is positioned at the third corner of the triangular-shaped profile for unlocking the locking device (100).
[052] In an embodiment, the second body (4) has a locking member (14). The locking member (14) of the second body (4) is defined at a distal end of the locking member.

The locking member (14) is configured to receive and hold a hook (16) for a locking operation of the locking device (100). The hook (16) may be placed at the vehicle opposite the locking device (100) so that the locking device (100) can receive the hook (16) for locking the seat of the vehicle. For example, the locking device (100) is located at the body of the vehicle whereas the hook (16) is located at the seat of the vehicle in order to lock the seat of the vehicle upon holding the hook (16) by the locking member (14) of the locking device (100). The locking member (14) has an inclined surface (4d), a base surface (4e), and a side flat surface (4f), as shown in Figures 8, 9, 10, and 11. The inclined surface (4d) extends downwards rearwards from a periphery of the second body (4), the base surface extends rearwards from an end of the inclined surface (4d), and the side flat surface (4f) extends in an upright direction from an end of the base surface (4e). The hook (16) is received at the inclined surface (4d) and held against a face of the side flat surface (4f) for locking the locking device (100). The inclined surface (4d), the base surface (4e), and the side flat surface (4f) of the locking member (14) are configured for smooth locking operation of the locking device (100).
[053] As shown in Figures 5, 6 and 7, a locking operation of the seat of the vehicle is illustrated. When the user presses the seat of the vehicle against the locking device (100), the hook (16) of the vehicle seat pushes the inclined surface (4d) of the locking member (14). In response to the pushing force, the second body (4) moves towards the upper portion of the rotor (4) against the spring (5). Due to said movement of the second body (4), the hook (16) moves over the base surface of the second body (4) where the hook does not allow the second body (4) to regain its previous position while moving from the base surface (4e). After that, as the hook (16) moves forward (in pushing force direction) from the base surface (4e), the second body (4) energized by the spring (5) regains its previous position and the hook (16) gets secured after the side flat surface of the second body (4). The side flat surface (4f) does not allow the hook (16) to move return towards the inclined surface (4d) unless the user unlocks the seat by using the key.
[054] As shown in Figures 3 and 4, an unlocking operation of the seat of the vehicle is illustrated. When the seat of the vehicle is in a locked condition, a hook (16) is positioned after the side flat surface of the second body (4). By using the key, the user can perform the unlocking operation. Before rotating the key, the pin (3) is positioned

at the first corner (4a) of the triangular-shaped profile, as shown in Figure 3. As the user rotates the key, the pin (3) pushes the second body (4) resulting in sliding over the path between the first corner (4a) and the third corner (4c), thereby the second body (4) moves towards the upper portion of the rotor (4) and the spring (5) gets compressed due to upside movement of the second body (4), for releasing the hook (16) from the second body (4), as shown in Figure 4. In other words, the pin (3) pushes the triangular-shaped profile of the cut-out portion (13) so that the pin (3) can readily slide over the said profile in order to move the second body (4) towards the upper portion of the first body (2) for unlocking the seat of the vehicle. This ensures the smooth functioning of the unlocking operation of the seat of the vehicle.
[055] The first body (2) is provided with a plurality of tumblers (7). The plurality of tumblers (7) is loaded with tumbler springs (6). The plurality of tumblers (7) ensures that the locking device (100) can be operated with a correct key. The provision of the tumblers (7) in the locking device (100) enhances the safety of the vehicle. Further, a slider (9) loaded with slider springs (8) is placed at the upper portion of the first body (2). The first body (2) is covered with a cap (10). The cap (10) is configured to prevent the entry of foreign particles such as water, dust, and the like inside the first body (2).
[056] As shown in Figures 11 and 14, the second body (4) has an extended portion (17). The extended portion is defined at a side portion of the second body (4). The extended portion (17) is movably configured in a slot (17a) formed at the housing (1) so that the rotational movement of the second body (4) can be prevented upon operating the first body (2). The housing (1) has a housing cap (12), As shown in Figures 13 and 14. The housing cap (12) is configured to cover the top end of the housing (1). The housing cap (12) is configured to prevent the entry of foreign particles such as water, dust, and the like inside the locking device (100).
[057] In accordance with the present disclosure, the locking device, as explained in the above paragraphs, is compact. Further, the above structure of the locking device is adapted provide smooth operation of locking and unlocking the seat of the vehicle. Also, the above explained locking device is simple in manufacturing and is economical.

[058] The various embodiments of the present disclosure have been described above with reference to the accompanying drawings. The present disclosure is not limited to the illustrated embodiments; rather, these embodiments are intended to fully and completely disclose the subject matter of the disclosure to those skilled in this art. In the drawings, like numbers refer to like elements throughout. The thicknesses and dimensions of some components may be exaggerated for clarity.
[059] Herein, the terms "attached", "connected", "interconnected", "contacting", "mounted", "coupled" and the like can mean either direct or indirect attachment or contact between elements, unless stated otherwise.

These and other modifications in the nature of the disclosure or the preferred embodiments will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein, whereby it is to be distinctly understood that the foregoing descriptive matter is to be interpreted merely as illustrative of the disclosure and not as a limitation.

We claim

1. A locking device (100) for a vehicle, the locking device (100) comprising:
a housing (1);
a first body (2) and a second body (4) movably disposed within the housing (1), wherein the first body (2) and the second body (4) are coaxially mounted to each other;
a spring (5) enclosed the first body (2) and positioned between an upper portion of the first body (2) and a proximal end of the second body (4) to energize the second body (4);
wherein the first body (2) comprises a pin (3) removably disposed on a lower portion of the first body (2) and extended radially outwards from a centre axis of the first body (2),
wherein the second body (4) comprises a cut-out portion (13) configured to receive the pin (3) of the first body (2), wherein the second body (4) is actuated by the pin (3) to convert a rotational motion of the first body (2) into a reciprocating motion of the second body (4) for unlocking the locking device (100),

2. The locking device (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the cut-out portion (13) comprises a triangular-shaped profile defined at periphery of the cut-out portion (13).
3. The locking device (100) as claimed in claim 2, wherein the triangular-shaped profile has a first corner (4a), a second corner (4b), and a third corner (4c).
4. The locking device (100) as claimed in claim 3, wherein the pin (3) is positioned at the first corner (4a) or the second corner (4b) of the triangular-shaped profile for an locking operation of the locking device (100).
5. The locking device (100) as claimed in claim 3, wherein the pin (3) is positioned at the third corner (4c) of the triangular-shaped profile for the unlocking operation of the locking device (100).

6. The locking device (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the locking member (14) comprises an inclined surface (4d), abase surface (4e), and a side flat surface (4f).

The locking device (100) as claimed in claim 6, wherein the inclined surface (4d) extends downwards rearwards from a periphery of the second body (4), the base surface (4e) extends rearwards from an end of the inclined surface (4d), and the side flat surface (4f) extends in an upright direction from an end of the base surface (4e), wherein the hook (16) is received at the inclined surface (4d) and held against the side flat surface (4f) for locking the locking device (100).
8. The locking device (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pin (3) is inserted into a hole (3a) defined in the lower portion of the first body (2).
9. The locking device (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the second body (4) has an extended portion (17) movably configured in a slot (17a) formed at the housing (1) to prevent rotational movement of the second body (4).
10. The locking device (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the first body (2) comprises a keyhole (15) defined in the upper portion of the first body (2) to receive a key.
