A Measuring Tool (Gauge) To Determine The Distortion Angle Between Two Surfaces Of Welded Component

Abstract: Welded components may get distorted after the weld cools down to room temperature. This distortion has to be controlled by proper welding parameters or sequence. These distortions may be acceptable when they are within a limit. To measure and check whether the distortion angle is within the limit, gauges are not available. This invention teaches about a gauge that can be used to measure the distortion angle of the welded component. This can be used to find the distortion as well as to check any intentional angle between any two components. Angle can be measured in both positive and also negative side of the weld plane i.e. Distortion of plate towards the upper side or lower side of the weld plane. The invention also has provision to measure reinforcement of weld. Excess reinforcement and depression in reinforcement can be measured by using the specific tip and graduations. Any depression on parent material of undercut can also be measured.

Specification

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to a gauge that can be used to support visual
inspection of welded component. In particular, the invention relates to a
gauge that has a provision to measure angular deviation between two
components. More particularly, the invention relates to a measuring
gauge which can be used for measuring the distortion angle of welded
components, angle between two component in an assembly, weld
reinforcement height, surface depression, depth of pitting and undercut
depth.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Visual inspection is a primary nondestructive testing method where the
integrity of the component can be verified by having a visual observation
on the component surface with or without using some measuring
gadgets. Normally gadgets are used to support the viewing, measuring or
recording the surface of the component. Dimensions like width of the
weld, height of reinforcement, high low during fit up are measured using
gauges which are readily available in the market. Welded components
like plate or tubes may have distortion which will cause trouble during
further assembly of the part. Therefore the distortion are limited within
some acceptable tolerance value. This distortion angle cannot be
measured with the gauges available in the existing art.

PRIOR ART
US4545124 Patent application teaches about gauge which can be used
to measure the width of the weld reinforcement where the components
are positioned with skew angle and welded.
US5465498 Patent application teaches about a gauge which can be used
to measure the mismatch present between two members present in a
welding joint fit up. This gauge can be used to measure the difference
between the top surfaces / bottom surfaces of the component but cannot
be used to measure the distortion angle.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a gauge which can be
used to measure the angle between two components which is welded.
Another object of the invention is to provide a gauge which can be used
to measure the angle between two components in an assembly.
Another object of the invention is to provide a gauge that can be used to
measure the weld reinforcement height.
A still another object of the invention is to provide a gauge which can be
used to measure surface depression and undercut present in weld.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a gauge which can be
used to measure pitting depth present in a component.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Accordingly, to alleviate the drawbacks of the prior art, the invention is
about a tool / gauge which can be used to measure the distortion angle
of the two plates or pipes which is welded. In addition it can be used to
measure angle between two components in an assembly or it can be used
to measure dimensions of reinforcement of butt weld, surface depression,
pit depth and undercut depth.
The gauge can be used to measure angle between two components
welded to each other. The angle can be caused intentionally due to
design or it can be caused because of distortion that occurred due to
welding. The gauge consists of a main template in which two legs are
assembled using temporary screws. 1 and 2 are movable parts of the
gauge which can be used to measure various dimensions present in
component or assembly. These legs consist of pointers which coincides
with the graduations present in the main template. Movable part 1 can
be used to measure butt weld reinforcement, surface depression, pitting
depth and undercut. Movable part 2 can be used to measure the angle
between two parts present in an assembly or it can be used to measure
angular distortion caused after welding. These legs can be moved to
required positions and temporarily tightened using the adjustable
screws.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE
INVENTION
The assembled view of this invention ie. measuring gauge is shown in
Figure 1. The gauge consist of main template, two movable legs (1 and 2),
pointer shim, pair of screws and nuts. The main gauge consist of two
graduations as shown in Figure 2, to perform the measurement. One
graduation is in millimeters and the other graduation is in degree. Two
through holes (3 and 4) are present in the main template in which leg
movable parts 1 and 2 will be mounted. Leg 1 can be moved vertically up
and down by using the guide (5). Figure 3 and 4 shows the movable Leg
1 and 2 respectively. Leg 1 consist of two pointers which can be used to
point out the graduations. Pointer 6 can be used to measure root

reinforcement and pointer 7 can be used to measure the surface
depression, pitting and undercut depth. An example of measuring root
reinforcement is shown in Figure 8. Leg 2 used to measure the angular
distortion is shown in Figure 4. Leg 2 has to be mounted after mounting
the pointer shim (Figure5) in hole 4. Leg 2 and pointer shim shall be
rotated to match the surface and measure the angular distortion of a
weld as shown in Figure 7, Leg 1 and 2 can be mounted in the holes 3
and 4 by using pair of screws and nut shown in Figure 6.
