Abstract: A method for capturing a part of a video from a main window of a display device and displaying the captured video on another window of the same display device, the method comprising the steps of: setting and ascertaining an enabling/disabling mechanism for said capture and display of the video image; starting a timer in case said mechanism is enabled; checking the status of the timer; disabling said mechanism in case no action is taken for a predetermined time set by said timer; splitting the first display into a plurality of areas and selecting a predetermined area from said plurality of areas; activating a navigation key and navigates the selected area according to the navigation key activated; activating an output key and captures the selected area; and displaying the captured area on the second display of said display device.
Field of the invention
This invention relates to a method and system for capturing a part of a video from a main window of a display device and displaying the captured video on another window of said display device.
Background of the invention
In the past, electronic screens, such as those used for televisions and computers, have only supported a single active window or screen at a time. For example, televisions with picture-in-picture capabilities have only one active screen, which can be manipulated at any given time. Similarly, in computer monitor systems, although the computer monitor screen may show a plurality of windows at any given time, only one window is active. There are instances when the computer screen can be divided into two screens, but the contents of the two windows are controlled by the same software, for example, a word processing function allowing two separate windows to be created to view two documents. However, only one of the documents can be accessed and manipulated at any given time, even in this scenario
To overcome this limitation, US Patent Application No. 2005/0007501 provides a screen operating system, which divides an electronic screen into discrete, independently multiple operating sub-screens, which are independently fed data and can be manipulated through discrete access lines. The invention also allows the user to select a portion of a video from one window and display the selected portion on a second window. However, the functionality of displaying the selected portion of the video on the second window is achieved by using a Video Operating System.
US Patent No 6556767 provides video capture device for real time and simultaneously capturing motion pictures inputted through a video input device, as non-compressed motion pictures and as motion pictures which are compressed in a relatively high compression ratio by using a compressing technique and which can be played in high picture quality, a video recording/playing apparatus having the video capture device
attached thereto, and a video input device. However, this does not provide an apparatus for capturing a part of motion picture.
US Patent No. 6,501,441 provides an apparatus for partitioning, scaling and displaying video and/or graphics across several display devices includes a video source, a master device and multiple display devices arranged into a multiple display configuration. Preferably, the master device partitions the video stream into image sections and assigns each display device a corresponding image section based on its position within the multiple display configuration. Each display device then preferably receives the video stream and separates the data representing the corresponding image section. Preferably, once the data for the corresponding image section is separated, the display devices then scale their respective image sections to a full screen size image and display the scaled image simultaneously with the display of the entire frame on all display devices within the multiple display configurations. Figure 1 illustrates an exemplary network of devices forming a multiple display configuration. The video is captured and displayed in an array of display devices. The user who has only single display device cannot use this to capture and view a part of video on same display device.
Object and summary of the invention
It is an object of the invention is to provide a method for capturing a part of a video from the main window of a display device and displaying the captured video on another window of same display device
It is another object of the present invention is to provide a method for viewing the captured video on a second window having detailed information of that captured video (scaling factor can be more as viewed on the main window).
To meet the above-mentioned objective the present invention provides a method for capturing a part of a video from a main window of a display device and displaying the
captured video on another window of said display device, the method comprising the steps of:
setting and ascertaining an enabling/disabling mechanism for capture and display
of the video image;
starting a timer in case said mechanism is enabled;
checking the status of the timer;
disabling said mechanism in case no action is taken for a predetermined time set
by said timer;
splitting the main window into a plurality of areas and selecting a predetermined
area from said plurality of areas;
activating a navigation key and navigates the selected area according to the
navigation key activated;
activating an output key and capturing the selected area, and
displaying the captured area on another display of said display device.

Figure 3 illustrates a flow chart for performing the method of the present invention. Detailed description of the invention
Figure 1 illustrates an exemplary network of devices forming a multiple display configuration according to the prior art as illustrated in the background section.
Figure 2.1 shows the normal video on the display device. During this stage enabling/disabling mechanism is disabled or moving picture capture and display mode (MPCD) is OFF
Figure 2.2 shows an on screen menu for user to select the enabling/disabling mechanism or MPCD. The user has an option of switching ON/OFF the MPCD mode either from direct remote control key or from on screen display of the display device.
Figure 2.3 depicts enabling/disabling mechanism or MPCD on. When MPCD mode is in active mode or in ON state, the video of the main window of the display device divides into NxM matrix or grid Matrix is the area, which the user can select to capture video to be displayed in another display of the same display device. Different matrix sizes are selected to divide the main screen or first display of the display device. The value of N and M depends on integrated chip (IC). In this diagram N=M=3.
Figures 2.4 and 2.5 depict that the user can scroll the area into grid to capture the desired part of the video. If any navigation key i.e. LEFT, RIGHT, UP, DOWN key or number key is pressed then the selection area moves accordingly. In figures 2.4 and 2.5 different navigation keys are pressed to select the area 2 and 4 respectively.
Figure 2.6 shows that the selected part of video is captured from main window and displayed in another window. If OK key or output key from the remote controller is pressed then the selected area is captured from the main or first display and displayed in another display or second display of the same display device. For example selected area 1 is captured and displayed as a separate window or display.
Figure 2.7 shows that after capturing the video we can change to another video source or channel while viewing the captured video in another window. As video captured from main window and displayed in another window of same display device, the user can now change the video source or channel for the main window and view the captured video (from previous source) in another window simultaneously. This operation is accomplished through the normal operation of the display device. On the other hand if the user wish to change the source for main window and do not wish to view the captured video in another window then the user switch off the MPCD mode from main menu or hot key of remote control and then change the source.
Figure 3 illustrates a flow chart for performing the method of the present invention.
The status of the enabling/disabling mechanism or moving picture capture and display (MPCD) is checked in step 301. If the mechanism is enabled or MPCD is in ON state then the main window or first display divide into N x M matrixes or grids which the user can select to capture video with default video capturing window highlighted. The value of M and N depends upon the integrated chip (IC). Otherwise the display device performs the normal operation in step 303. If the MPCD is ON, then a background timer will start in step 304 so that if no operation is done for pre specified time then MPCD mode will
exit. In step 305, the display device checks whether any valid key is pressed or not. If no valid key is pressed, then it checks whether the predetermined time set by the timer is over or not (step 306) If the MPCD timeout is reached, then MPCD mode will exit in step 308 and in step 309 the display device will go back to the normal operation. If any valid key is pressed, then MPCD timer is reset in step 310. Then the display device checks whether any navigation key is pressed or not in step 311. If no navigation key is pressed then it checks whether the output key or OK key is pressed or not in step 312. If no output key is pressed, then the MPCD mode will exit in step 313 and the display device will perform the normal operation in step 309. If any navigation key is pressed, then the selected area which user wishes to capture moves according to the navigation key pressed in step 314 (as shown in figures 2.4 and 2.5). If the user presses the output key, then another window will switch on and captured area will display on that window in step 315 (as shown in figure 2.6 where user selected and captured the area 1 and displayed that in another window). If the user wishes to change the source from main window while viewing the captured video in another window, he/she can do so through the normal operation of the display device in step 316.
