The following specification describes the nature of the invention and the manner in which it is to be performed.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION:
The present invention relates to a method for emotion based, customization and synchronization of mobile content on a communication device. More particularly the present invention relates to a method that enables to customize mobile content dynamically according to user's emotion, and functions as an emotional companion for the user.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION AND PRIOR ART:
Personalizing mobile phones has grown into a multi-billion dollar business worldwide, as one of the most popular pastimes and hobbies of a big majority of mobile handset users is customizing their mobile handset.
The pervasive nature of mobile handsets and "ready at hand" characteristic make people establish a certain bond with their mobile phones. This "connection" can be manifested in personalizing their mobile phones because they see this electronic equipment as an entity that is always there for them. The various personalization activities that people do on their mobile handsets include but are not limited to setting a particular ring tone of choice, downloading songs, setting different wail papers and themes etc. It becomes a natural progression of this close proximity for people to start customizing their phones to reflect their personality, emotions, mood or disposition. Hence, cellular phone users can use themes to express themselves and their individuality.
Some of the inventions which deal in customization of mobile handsets are as follows:
US6782253 discloses a method wherein a mobile phone equipped with, e.g., Bluetooth-compatible hardware and software can communicate directly with a local device and/or local service. Further the invention discloses user-programmable user-profile wherein the user is enabled to set his/her communication device into one (or more) of multiple activity modes, e.g., shopping, contacting, chatting, messaging with friends, special interests such as sports, communal activities, etc. Facilitation signals that are associated with this shopping activity then cause the user to be alerted of certain nearby services or goods. The contacting mode relies on messages posted by other people and carried, or referred to, by the facilitation signal. If the message or sender group fits the current user-profile, i.e., does not get filtered out, the user gets alerted to the message. The message posted is, e.g., a virtual advertisement by a private person relating to goods the person wants to sell or buy, or in the chatting mode a virtual announcement for meeting another person. The invention as described in the '253 patent would stream the
content as per user-profile only upon the availability of the facilitation signal, whereas in our invention the content is streamed in the usual course irrespective of any special facilitation signal as per user's emotion and preset preferences. The current invention does not merely allow its user to change the profile of the phone based on his environment rather it gauges the user's mood and personalizes different kinds of content and services to provide an environment that sustains or makes better the user's mood by creating a new and personalized environment for the user thus enabling the phone to serve as an emotional companion.
US6941134 discloses automated management of the behavior of a wireless communication device based on preset preferences or controls (e.g., parents or employers) set preferences or controls specifying the actions or inactions that a wireless communication device (or an account associated with one or more wireless communication devices) will be constrained to. The specified preferences reside at the service provider's network to the extent required to download such preferences to the wireless communication device(s) and to communicate new or changed conditions or events. Though '134 patent describes a method of setting preferences on a mobile device or on service provider's network it does not disclose automatic customization mobile content according to user's emotions.
US6999749 discloses wireless communication system comprising a wireless communication device that stores the software application, data, event manager application and short message service controller (SMSC) application provided by the service provider. The communication device automatically receives signals indicating predetermined events, and automatically takes actions in response to the events. The actions include executing one or more software applications stored on the device. Though 749 patent describes a mobile communication device that performs one or more actions using one or more software applications based on predefined user preferences, but it fails to disclose automatic customization of mobile content according to user's emotions.
US7224963 discloses a method for managing themes applicable to a mobile phone wherein themes provide the mobile phone with changeable characteristics pertaining to the appearance and sound presented by the mobile phone. A theme profile associated with the mobile phone contains data pertaining to which theme to apply to the mobile phone and when there should be transition to another theme as well as, where the theme content data is located. The mobile phone then waits for a triggering event to occur. When such a triggering event occurs, it causes a transition from the currently active theme to another theme. A new theme based on an associated triggering event is applied to the mobile phone changing its look and feel, wherein the particular theme is either stored locally on the mobile phone or on the network. Our present invention
streams content both from the network as well as use locally available content irrespective of the occurrence of the triggering event; and provide the user unique mood-based customization process where the user is allowed to choose his content for each particular mood based on the pre-defined preferences. The next time the user clicks on a mood icon he is presented with the entire range of customized content which he can choose from. This content is either streamed from the network or played from the.local host. Further our present invention offers the user various services like news updates and SMS apart from the entire range of content for each mood of the user based on his pre-defined preferences.
US7551913 proposes an anonymous user identification and content personalization method to a user of a wireless network including establishing an anonymous user identifier and delivering the user identifier to a content provider. Based on the user identifier, communication with a predetermined data source is established or predetermined data content is selected. The anonymous user identifier can be based on a subscriber identity module (SIM) serial number or a hash of the SIM serial number so that user information such as a user phone numbers is not available to content providers. The '913 patent fails to disclose the method for automatic customization and streaming of mobile content according to user's emotions with preset preferences.
US7606837 discloses a mechanism for selectively identifying the type of information that can be downloaded to the mobile device. In one embodiment, the mechanism includes a user interface resident on the mobile device that allows user selection of the type of information. In another embodiment, the mechanism includes a profile maintained on a server. The profile identifies the type of information, such as file types, that a particular mobile device supports. As a further refinement, the type of information may be based on a file size associated with the information. Once the type of information is identified, the server downloads the identified type of information to the mobile device without downloading undesired types of information. Thus, in accordance with the present invention, the synchronization session of the mobile device is efficiently managed so that undesired information is not downloaded to the mobile device. Though '837 patent discloses a method for efficient synchronization of information on a mobile handset, the invention does not discloses methods for streaming emotion based user-specific content, rather the patent is more focused on establishing the supporting file-type and identity of the user mobile device.
US20070100648 discloses a mobile application development platform to streamline the development process for mobile applications to enable efficiency for the development of applications such as video and image streaming, delivery and uploading. The development
platform provides a multi-language support, project management integration and deployment technology for distributing content across multiple mobile device platforms. The content management system of the patent '648 is configured to convert the content into a plurality of versions that are customized for various device platforms. The correct version can then be downloaded to each mobile device. The conversion process optimizes the content for each device so that the content can be viewed, or accessed in the most efficient manner. Our present invention provides the user a wide variety of content such as themes, jokes, inspirational speech, wallpapers, video, audio and caller tunes to choose from according to his mood and the application automatically creates environments with different content for each mood based on the one-time pre-defined and customized preferences and suggests content to the user according to his mood.
US20080215709 discloses a method for updating user profile on a server based on user content items on a client, wherein the server communicates with the client via a communication network. The server first provides the information suitable to identify a respective user content item and transfers and compares the information from the client to the server and updates the profile on the server. The patent'709 discloses a method for updating user profile on a server, it uses the metadata to update the profile, whereas the present invention is based on the application mapping of the user ID. The patent'709 fails to customize and synchronize the mobile content according to user's emotions.
In light of the above mentioned prior arts it is evident that there is a need to have a customizable solution that can dynamically stream and change the contents of the mobile handset based on the emotion and the interests of the user, wherein such solution shall not involve any hardware modifications in the communication devices including mobile handsets.
In order to address the long felt need of such a solution, the present invention provides a method for emotion based customization and synchronization of content on a communication device as described in the specification.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION:
The present invention discloses a system and method that enables the communication device to act as an emotional companion of the user. The user first downloads the emotional companion mobile application (Emo application) on to the communication device (e.g. mobile handset) and is provided with a unique identity and the personalized account by the service provider, such an account can be operated from multiple platforms by the user and will be used to store user
preferences and choice of content that user would like to stream as per the mood or emotion of the user.
The Emo application changes the user's environment according to the user's mood automatically upon mood selection. When the user clicks on a particular mood he receives a range of his favorite content derived from preselected user specified class of content that is streamed dynamically on the click of a button. The application creates an environment for the user from external content as well as content that is locally stored locally on the user's mobile phone (e.g. previously streamed content). The user can customize content for each mood anytime.
The Emo application further tracks the user's interests in terms of the kind of content he prefers when he is in a certain mood and provides the user with a more personalized choice of content for customization in the future. For e.g.: If the application tracks that the user chooses music from a particular genre every time he is happy, the application gives the user a wider choice of content from that particular genre the next time the user chooses the customization option for that particular mood.
The Emo application also offers services like news updates and SMS apart from the entire range of content that is offered to the user for each mood. Apart from customized content the emo application also allows the user to customize his widgets. Further clicking on any widget for a particular mood will fetch customized search results. Apart from content the user also gains access to special services like sending an SMS to a pre-defined set of people
The invention enables the service provider to append an advertisement from the advertisement repository of the server based on the user's choice of content and profiling. The present invention also enables the user to automatically update user's emotion or the preferences from various platforms including his/her social networking accounts.

upon request sent from the locally stored emo application to the server.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the communication device can be any device that can be wirelessly connected to the server of the service provider including but not limited to mobile phone, a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) or any portable communication device.
The present invention provides a method for emotion based customization and synchronization of content on a communication device.
Figure 1 of the present invention provides a flowchart depicting various steps for customization and synchronization of content on a communication device, wherein the emotional companion mobile application (emo application) is downloaded from the server of the telecom service provider or the third party value added service provider to convert his phone into his companion or friend or a support system that changes as per his emotion (100).
Emo application is locally stored and installed on the communication device (110) upon downloading from the server.
The user of the communication device launches and registers the emo application with the server for emotion based customization and synchronization of content on his mobile phone (120),
On launch and registration of the emo application for the first time with the server, the user is instantly given an auto-generated unique id or account by the application (130). A repository based on the unique ID is maintained for each user,
User need not customize his content again on changing the mobile handset, as his preferences are stored in the server and can be accessed anytime with the help of his Unique ID.
On generation of unique ID, the user customizes his preference for the mobile content like themes, wallpapers, video, audio, jokes, inspirational speech, and caller tunes and select a group to send SMS to, according to each emotion either from the content in his phone memory or from content provided by Telecom Service Provider or third party value added service providers in the market on first registration of the emo application with the server.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, emotion may be but not limited to happy, angry, sad, tensed, romantic, hungry, lonely, upset, nervous and anxious.
The user's choice of content for each emotion is then automatically stored in the repository on both the server and the locally stored and installed emo application (140).
The customized content can be viewed for each emotion in the repository present on the application. The mobile content provided to the user for customization is dynamic and based on the customer analytics collected and resourced by the Telecom Service Provider or the third value added service provider (150).
The choice of content provided to each user is unique and based on the user's interest. The user can further customize the content provided by the service provider or choose content from the phone memory according to his emotion.
Once the user has customized and defined his preferences for each emotion, the user choice content is stored in both the repository of the server and on the emo application based on the user ID or account (160).
The user can play and further customize his options anytime and as many times through streaming or downloading it and then playing it locally anytime.
The Emo application enhances the emotion of the user and gradually influences the user's emotion towards happiness by selecting content for each emotion and positioning contents appropriately to have a better impact. For e.g.: tf the application tracks that the user chooses music from a particular genre every time he is happy, the application gives the user a wider choice of content from that particular genre the next time the user chooses the customization option for that particular mood.
The next time the user can directly access his personalized account on the appl ication b y choosing the relevant emoticon, smilie or text for the emotion and view the content synchronized to the emotion (170).
The user's choice content provided by the Telecom Service Provider or third party value added service providers is streamed and user's mobile content like wallpaper, theme, caller tune, audio, video on the communication device are changed based on the user's emotion.
Further the emo application recalls, tracks and dynamically streams the user's interests in terms of the kind of mobile content he prefers when he is in a certain mood and provides the user with a more personalized choice of content for customization in the future, on request sent from the emo application on launch of the application (180).
The advertisement selection engine of the telecom service provider on receipt of a request from the emo application appends an advertisement from the advertisement repository of the server for mobile content such as themes, wallpapers, video, audio, jokes, inspirational speech, and caller tunes based on the pre-defined user's choice content and profile stored in the repository of the server.
The advertisement selection engine appends an advertisement along with the content so that the content reaches users at cheaper rates.
Optionally the user's mood is notified automatically to pre-defined contacts via group SMS or by updating the status of the user's mood on the user's social networking websites (190).
the Telecom Service Provider uses a gateway to send an SMS to user's predefined contacts about the user's emotion.
The billing engine of the telecom service provider or third party vale added service provider appends the discounts on downloaded content, charges for notifying user's mood to pre-defined contacts via SMS or user's social networking websites along with the advertisements for the mobile contents.
Further, the emo application optionally provides multiple platforms to the user to access his personalized account using his unique ID at various touch points like web portal to customize his content on web portal as well as on the communication device (200).
Figure 2 of the present invention provides a flow chart of method for customization and synchronization of content on a communication device. The first step is to customize the emotion based content provided in the menu of the emo application (300).
The user is presented with a set of pre-defined or user defined emoticons or smilies or text for emotion in the widget page of the application as per his request (310). The emo application provides the user customized search results, for example: If the user has customized a Michael
Jackson track for his happy emotion then clicking on the YouTube widget will also directly take the user to search results for other Michael jackson tracks which the user can customize.
The widget page for each emotion provides the mobile content to be customized. The next step the user carries out is to customize mobile content like Themes, Wallpapers, Video, Audio, jokes, inspirational speech, and Caller tunes and select a group to send SMS to, according to each emotion either from the mobile content stored in the phone memory or from content provided by Telecom Service Provider or third party value added service providers (320).
The user can further customize the mobile content at any time and as many times he wants.
The invention further incorporates PIM2R along with menus in local languages to help in easy customization.
BEST MODE/EXAMPLE OF WORKING OF THE INVENTION
The invention is described in the example given below which is provided only to illustrate the invention and therefore should not be construed to limit the scope of the invention.
Figure 3 shows a flow chart illustrating the workflow of the invention according to one embodiment of the invention.
First the user launches the emo application on selection of the relevant application icon. On launch of the application, the main menu will be displayed, from which the user can select the 'customization option' to customize content for different emotions, or enter the application directly and view the content synchronized for various moods (400).
Further, the user is presented with various moods available in the customize option. For example if user selects the relevant emoticon, smilie or text for the emotion "Happy" (410), the user is then taken to a screen where the various content categories (video, audio, caller tune, wallpaper and group SMS) that can be customized for the happy mood are displayed (420).
Further if the user likes to watch a particular video when he is happy, the user can enter the video option, wherein a list of available videos are presented to the user by the server of the telecom service provider or the third party value added service provider. The list is dynamic and changes each time according to the profile of the user. If the user likes to watch the video of Michael
Jackson when he is happy, the user can select it (430). Further the user can optionally preview the video before selecting it.
Once the video is chosen the video gets added to the user's application content repository for the happy mood. The User can also further customize a set of widgets for the happy mood (440).
The customization process has to be done for each mood similarly. Once the customization process is completed the user can go back to the main menu by selecting the back button (450).
When the user enters the mood based synchronization option, the various predefined emoticon, smilie or text for the emotion are present (460). When the user clicks on a particular emoticon, smilie or text for the emotion, example.the happy mood, the user is given various content options (470).
The customized widgets for the happy mood are displayed (480). As mentioned in the above example if the user likes to watch Michael Jackson video when he feels happy, he can click on the video option (490). When the video option is clicked the Michael Jackson video customized by the user is automatically streamed from the server (500).
Thus once the user customizes his options the environment changes accordingly when the user clicks on the happy mood. When the user clicks on a particular mood, the user's pre-defined set of friends are also notified regarding the user's mood. (510)
Thus the user syncs content with his mood. A customized search option automatically searches for more Michaef Jackson videos. The user either syncs a video with a mood or simply chooses to view it.
Apart from the already customized options, the user can also view quotes and inspirational speeches which are streamed dynamically from the server (520).
The next time the user wants to customize content for a particular mood, the content that is presented to him is more user-preference specific as the application uniquely tracks customer preferences (530).
Once the user views the content, the user can go back to the main menu by selecting the back button (540).
The preceding description has been presented with reference to various embodiments of the invention.
