-2-
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a method for live transmission of decoded digital
video data from portable multimedia player (PMP) to display devices over WiR /
Bluetooth / WiMax protocols.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
A portable multimedia player (PMP) is a self-reliant electronic device that is
capable of storing and playing files in one or media formats. Multimedia data is
typically stored on a hard drive, microdrive, or flash memory. PMPs are able to
load and play different formats of video, audio, still digital images, and other
interactive media like flash animations. They typically feature a colour LCD or
OLED screen. Various PMPs support recording video and audio and some have
built-in card readers like SD or MMC, which makes it convenient to upload media
directly to the player, or the memory is used as extra capacity.

-3-
A codec is a program or device capable of performing encoding or decoding on a
digital data stream or signal. The word codec may be a combination of any of
the following: Compressor-Decompressor, Coder-Decoder, or Compression /
Decompression algorithm.
WiFi was originally a brand licensed by the WiFi alliance to describe the
embedded technology of wireless local area networks (WLAN) based on the IEEE
802.11 standard. As of 2007, common use of the term WiFi has broadened to
describe the generic wireless interface of mobile computing devices, such as
laptops in LANs. Common uses for WiFi include internet and VoIP phone access,
gaming, and network connectivity for consumer electronics such as televisions,
DVD players, and digital cameras.
Bluetooth is an industrial specification for wireless personal area networks.
Bluetooth provides a way to connect and exchange information between devices
such as mobile phones, laptops, PCs, printers, digital cameras, and video game
consoles over a secure, globally unlicensed short-range radio frequency.

-4-
It is almost impossible for any portable multimedia player to playback all digital
video content because of its limited decoding capabilities. In the current market
and competitive digital media trends, video / movie is available in number of
video formats like MPEG-1, MPEG-2, DivX, MPEG-4, MPEG-7, MPEG-21, H.263,
H.264. WMV etc. Some of these formats are open source and some formats are
proprietary by one or the other company. Further to this, now a days almost all
portable multimedia player manufacturers are releasing their products with a
specific format protected under digital rights management (DRM) license. With
digital rights management it becomes difficult to share the video files from one
portable multimedia player to another and with other media players.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The main object of the present invention is to provide a solution of sharing
multiple format video / movie flies stored in portable multimedia player to the
plurality of display devices for live rendering.

-5-
Thus if one user is having video file in the personal portable multimedia player it
is understood that it can be decoded and played over the portable multimedia
player, and the user can give play access of video / movie stored on personal
portable multimedia player to other devices which are capable of displaying. The
devices on which portable multimedia player can share and play live video
contain other portable multimedia player devices, multi-function monitors,
Universal Serial Bus monitors, and digital albums. The play request will be
generated by host portable multimedia player and can be accepted by the client
devices irrespective of format of the file and digital rights management license
issues, if any. When portable multimedia player owner wants to render the
video stored in the portable multimedia player on the display device along with /
without rendering on the personal portable multimedia player, display device
owner has to accept the rendering request. Once the send / accept request of
live video sharing / rendering is complete, portable multimedia player decodes
the video file, converts it into analog format using digital-to-analog converter and
transmits over WiFi / WiMAX / Bluetooth to the display device for live rendering.

-6-
This way, a decoding operation takes place inside the personal portable
multimedia player, which can obviously decode all the video formats stored in it
and supported by the manufacturer. Video stored in the personal portable
multimedia player can then be shared across a plurality of display devices and
can be rendered live. This way, display device owner can enjoy live view of
video contents actually stored in the portable multimedia player device via
wireless transmission using Bluetooth, WiFi, WiMAX or other supported
technology.
In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a method for live
transmission of digital video data from portable multimedia players (PMP) to
display devices, comprising the steps of: extracting video file format on a
personal portable multimedia players (PMP); sending a rendering request from
portable multimedia players to a display device, for example, for sharing video
data; decoding the video content in the PMP after approval of play / rendering
request by the display or client device; and enabling a receiving device for
receiving wireless communication to capture live video data transmitted by the
portable multimedia device.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWING
The invention can now be described in detail with the help of the figure of the
accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 illustrates the user settings for the system of the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
As shown in Figure 1, first the video file format extracted on the personal
portable multimedia player. In case of sharing a video file across display devices
and rendering it live with / without rendering it on the portable multimedia player
screen, the portable multimedia player sends a rendering request to display
device. For example sharing a video in conference and rendering it on the
multiple computers or rendering a video on digital albums, multi-function
monitors, and Universal Serial Bus monitors compared to small screen of portable
multimedia player. In this scenario, an application running on the display device
has to accept the request sent by portable multimedia player for live rendering of
its personal video.

-8-
Once the play / rendering request has been approved by the client device
(display device on which portable multimedia player will render the video), the
decoder (developed in the firmware) of the portable multimedia player will
decode the video content. The raw video data (frame buffers) will be kept on
digital-to-analog converter. Analog display data obtained thus will be streamed
through WiFi / WiMAX / Bluetooth channel to the display device for live
rendering.
The receiving device should be enabled for wireless communication (receiving) to
capture the live video data sent by the portable multimedia player. The
rendering will be taken care of by the display device.
If the file, the portable multimedia player wants to share or render, is licensed,
the license is checked first and digital rights management decryption is done. If
the device does not have the license, the license is acquired. If acquiring license
fails, portable multimedia player will generate the license error. Portable

-9-
multimedia player will be able to successfully decode and stream the live video
data over the display devices for rendering only if the digital rights management
license is not violated.
Thus the present invention provides a portable multimedia player device which
can send a request to plurality of display devices for rendering the video stored
in own storage and can be decoded by the own decoder. The portable
multimedia player device which can transmit the live video content after
decoding from the supported format and digital-to-analog conversion and can
check for the digital rights management licensing issues, if any, can acquire the
license if not available, and can generate the licensing error, if it could not be
acquired. The invention also provides display devices such as digital albums,
multi-functional monitors, and Universal Serial Bus (USB) monitors which can
respond to the request of live rendering generated by portable multimedia
player. The display devices can receive and render the live video data
transmitted by the portable multimedia player on own screen. The invention

-10-
also provides a method for sharing video content stored in portable multimedia
player, decoding, conversion from digital to analog, and transmission over
wireless channel for live rendering on plurality of display devices. It further
provides a method for rendering the live video on the plurality of display devices
which may not contain sufficient storage to store video files and clips or may not
contain the format specific decoder.
Advantages of the system of the present invention include sharing of video files
stored on portable multimedia player with multiple display devices for live
rendering and playback watching. The present invention removes the need to
port specific format decoders on the display devices which are otherwise
required to play video formats stored in portable multimedia player devices. The
invention provides immediate and on-demand video rendering on display devices
which may not be able to store the video or decode it if stored due to limited
storage capacity and decoding capacity of firmware decoders. It allows
immediate and on-demand video sharing and rendering on a group of portable

-11-
multimedia players and a group of portable multimedia player owners can enjoy
similar video content for group watching experience which otherwise not possible
due to the highly compact size of the portable multimedia player screen. There
is no need to have specific format decoders on every portable multimedia players
in a group. Decoding capacity of one portable multimedia player for a particular
video file is sufficient to watch the same video over a group of portable
multimedia players. The invention increases the value of the portable
multimedia player by adding a feature of video sharing capability. There is no
need of Universal Serial Bus connectivity between host portable multimedia
player and client device as the transmission media is wireless.
