PREAMBLE TO THE DESCRIPTION
The following specification particularly describes this invention and the manner in which it is to be performed.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[001] The present invention relates to a method of plastering a wall surface. More particularly, the present invention relates to a method of plastering a wall surface to obtain a smooth, shiny and lustrous surface finish.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[002] Conventionally, cement, sand and water are mixed at construction site and manually applied
as a plaster on a brick wall surface. It is then cured with water for weeks. Post curing, white cement
putty is applied on the plastered wall to get a smooth finish. At the end, acrylic paint is applied on
the wall which has volatile organic compounds and bad odour which is also an environmental,
health and safety issue.
[003] This entire process of preparing a wall is not only time consuming but labour intensive as
well. Moreover, this process involves wastage of around 10-15% of the material.
[004] Therefore, there is a need of a method of plastering a wall surface which solves some of the
problems of the prior art.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[005] According to an embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a method for plastering a wall surface, comprising the steps of:
- positioning a formwork on a wall surface to define a gap between the formwork and the
wall surface, the formwork contacting the wall surface on all sides except the top side of
the formwork; and
- pouring a wall-plastering mixture into the said gap and letting the mixture harden,
provided that the inner surface of the formwork comprises a lustre imparting substance to
provide a lustrous finish to the plastered wall surface.
[006] According to another embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a method for preparing a lustrous tile comprising the following steps:
-preparing a mould of the desired shape and size;
-temporarily affixing a lustre imparting substance to the inner bottom surface of the mould;
and
-pouring into the mould a composition comprising cement, inert filler, defoaming agent
and polycarboxylate ester based superplasticizer.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE EMBODIMENTS
[007] The embodiments of the present invention eliminate or reduces the aforementioned problems of the prior art by providing a method for plastering a wall surface by bringing it in contact with a material which provides a lustrous coating on the surface.
[008] According to an embodiment of the present invention, on any wall surface which requires plastering and painting and where the thickness of the wall is also required to be increased, a solid formwork is fixed on such wall surface such that a gap of required dimension is left between the formwork and the wall surface. Thereafter, the wall-plastering mixture is poured into the gap between the brick wall surface and the formwork and preferably the mix is left to set. Once it sets, the solid formwork can be removed thereby providing a shiny, smooth and lustrous wall behind. [009] In an embodiment, a formwork is fixed to the wall surface such that the plastering mixture or cement paste cannot ooze out of it. Preferably, in the method of the present invention, there is no need of curing with water thereby saving more time and energy.
[010] In an embodiment, the formwork can either be made up of hydrophobic material such as acrylic, plastic, glass, polyethylene or any other similar material that provides a shiny and lustrous finish to the surface.
[011] In an embodiment, the composition of the wall-plastering mixture comprises of 20% - 60% of cement, 20% - 60% of inert filler material having a particle size of 1µm- 20mm, optionally 4%-15% of pozzolanic material, 0.1% - 5% of PCE based superplasticizer and optionally 0.1% - 2% of preservative or biocide for providing antibacterial property. The wall-plastering mixture can also be mortar mix or concrete mix, depending upon the requirement.
[012] In an embodiment, 0.1% - 1% of defoamers are used in the composition of wall-plastering mixture such that no holes / air bubbles are present on the final finished surface resulting in a smooth and shiny surface.
[013] In an embodiment, the cement paste may be cast as wall finish, ceiling or floor and additionally may be cast as a tile and used in the ceiling, floor or wall. Tiles can be made by using the method of the present invention and can be directly fixed on the floor or ceiling or walls. The floor is prepared by the method of the present invention such that the resulting floor is shiny and lustrous.
[014] In an embodiment, a wall is constructed with the cement paste wherein two formworks are temporarily fixed on the ground parallel to each other so as to define a space between them into which the wall-plastering mixture or cement paste is poured. Once the wall hardens, the formworks are removed resulting in two shiny and reflective sides of the wall.
[015] According to an embodiment of the present invention, the formwork is made up of a solid acrylic board. Preferably, there is pre-determined gap between the brick wall surface and the said solid formwork such that the cement paste can be poured in the gap. Preferably, the pre-determined gap can be calculated based on the amount of thickness that is required on the wall surface. Once the binder sets, the solid board can be removed leaving a reflective surface behind.
[016] Preferably, the cement paste contains pigments in the composition of the cement paste thereby eliminating the need of applying acrylic paint on the surface. Preferably, the pigments can be selected from colour pigments, photochromatic pigments, color shifting pigments, fluorescent color pigments where colour glows in artificial light, thermochromic pigments, hydrochromic pigments and any other functional pigments.
[017] The present method leads to an increase in speed of construction. Moreover, the finish of the surface obtained is reflective and is better than the finish that is obtained in conventional methods such as painting and the ease of construction also increases. The method of the invention does away with the need for the separate, time-consuming and labour-intensive steps of curing the cement plastered wall and then applying putty and finally acrylic painting of the wall thereafter. [018] Advantages and benefits of the method of plastering a wall surface, according to the embodiments of the present invention, would become more apparent to a person skilled in the art from the below examples. [019] Example 1: Method of applying cementitious binder for a lustrous wall finish.
a) A wooden formwork of dimensions 2 feet × 1 feet and a depth of 1 cm was fabricated;
b) a flexible poly- carbonate sheet, with smooth, scratch free surface finish, was cut to required size and fixed inside the said formwork. Care was taken to avoid any unwanted air gaps in between surfaces of plywood and the sheet;
c) the formwork was temporarily fixed on a masonry brick-wall surface;
d) the formwork was filled with the self-leveling mortar mix till the top. No vibration or agitation was required as a defoamer was used in the composition of the mortar mix;
e) post mortar mix hardening, the wooden formwork was removed.
Observation - The surface of the hardened mortar was found to be defect free, reflective with
high gloss. Effectively it had a marble like finish. With this method, need of plastering putty
and paint application is removed.
Example 2:
Table 1 -Mortar mix composition prepared and used in this experiment –
Components Percentage by weight (%)
White cement 42.8
White micro silica 8.7
Ultrafine calcium carbonate (UFCC) 29.3
Titanium dioxide 2.4
Water 15.1
PCE based superplasticizer 0.95
Defoamer 0.1
[020] For mortar casting purpose, an acrylic mould was prepared and additional poly-carbonate sheet without any surface defect was placed at the bottom of this mould. A fresh mortar paste prepared having the composition as mentioned in Table 1 was then poured into this mould and the top surface was levelled.
[021] Observation - After demoulding, it was observed that the surface finish of the cement based tile prepared is at par with the commercially available white marble. The mortar mixture was high strength mortar mix design and gave 28 days’ compressive strength > 100 MPa in normal water curing conditions.
[022] The foregoing description of specific embodiments of the present invention has been presented for purposes of description. They are not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the present invention to the precise forms disclosed, and obvious modifications and variations are possible in light of the above teaching.
