Abstract: A method for pre treatment of raw water for Reverse Osmosis application comprising storing raw water in a tank and feeding the raw water from tank to cartridge filter housing by means of a raw water pump for primary filtration and feeding primary filtered water from tank to a module containing ceramic membranes for secondary filter and feeding the secondary filtered water from tank to a part to fill filter water tank, a part to cater to chemical cleaning tank and a part to fill a tank to flush back the ceramic membrane by means of flush back pump and feeding the chemicals from chemical cleaning tank to ceramic membrane for cleaning purpose by means of a chemical cleaning pump.

Specification

FIELD OF THE INVENTION:-
The present invention relates to a water treatment system and more particularly,
the present invention relates to a method of generating pre treated water for
Reverse Osmosis based Desalination Plant feed water application.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:-
Pre treatment of the raw water for inlet to Reverse Osmosis system is done
through a series of Sand Filters and Activated Carbon filters to remove all
suspended particles and colloidal particles to some extent. The performance of
this system is not consistent and varies with respect to variation in raw water
quality, dosage of chemicals, etc. This variation in the outlet parameters affect
the overall performance of the Reverse Osmosis system.
Also, this conventional pre treatment water system occupies larger foot print and
requires constant monitoring. It requires frequent backwash cycle, almost once
in 8 to 10 hrs depending on the dust loading in the raw water. It involves use of
sand media of various sizes and the top layer is to be topped up often to make
up the losses due to back washing.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION:-
It is therefore, an object of the present invention to propose a method of pre
treatment of water for Reverse Osmosis application which eliminates the
disadvantages of existing system.
Another object of the present invention is to propose a method of pre treatment
of water for Reverse Osmosis application which reduces the footprint and avoids
huge volume of material handling.
A further object of the present invention is to propose a method of pre treatment
of water for Reverse Osmosis application which reduces the chemical
requirement.
A still further object of the present invention is to propose a method of pre
treatment of water for Reverse Osmosis application which reduces handling of
the hazardous chemicals.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION:-
A method for pre treatment of raw water for Reverse Osmosis application
comprising storing raw water in a tank and feeding the raw water from tank to
cartridge filter housing by means of a raw water pump for primary filtration and
feeding primary filtered water from tank to a tank containing ceramic membrane
modules for secondary filter and feeding the secondary filtered water from tank
to a part to fill filter water tank, a part to cater filter water to chemical cleaning
tank and a part to fill a tank to flush back the ceramic membrane by means of
flush back pump and feeding the chemicals from chemical cleaning tank to
ceramic membrane for cleaning purpose by means of a chemical cleaning pump.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ACCOMPANYING DRAWING:-
Fig. 1 shows a line diagram of ceramic membrane based pre treatment system.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE
INVENTION:-
As shown in Fig. 1, the new method of filtration of water is provided with a raw
water tank (1). The raw water from tank (1) is fed to a cartridge filter housing
with filter elements (3) by means of raw water feed pump (2) to filter out freely
suspended particle. The primary filtered water from filter cartridge is sent to a
set of ceramic membrane modules with polymer coated membrane (4). The
water from module (4) after secondary filtered is fed to a filter water tank (5) for
supply of filtered water to Reverse Osmosis feed requirement and utility water
requirement of the Plant. A part of secondary filtered is filled in back flush tank
(06) for supply of filtered water for periodical back wash of ceramic membrane
(4) by means of a back wash pump (7). A part of secondary filtered water from
the ceramic membrane is fed to a series of chemical cleaning tank (08.09.10) for
preparation and recirculation of chemicals to restore/improve the performance of
ceramic filter elements. A chemical cleaning pump (11) is provided to flush back
ceramic membrane for cleaning purpose, necessary piping and valves, necessary
electrical control and instrumentations and a small PLC system as provided to
take care of the day to day sequential operational requirements. The entire
system is arranged as a skid mounted unit so that it can be transported to
various places.

WE CLAIM:-
1. A method for pre treatment of raw water for Reverse Osmosis application
comprising :-
- storing raw water in a tank (1);
- feeding the raw water from tank (1) to cartridge filter housing (3) by
means of a raw water pump (2) for primary filtration;
- feeding primary filtered water from tank (3) to a module (4) containing
ceramic membrane modules for secondary filter;
- feeding the secondary filtered water from module (4) to
- a part to fill filter water tank (5)
- a part to cater filter water to chemical cleaning tank (8, 9,10)
- a part to fill a tank (06) to flush back the ceramic membrane by
means of flush back pump (7);
- feeding the chemicals from chemical cleaning tank (8, 9,10) to ceramic
membrane for cleaning purpose by means of a chemical cleaning pump

2. The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein a part of filtered water is fed to
dump and a part of filtered water is again returned back to tank (1).
3. The method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the ceramic membrane is coated
with a polymer layer.
