A Method Of Effective Cooling Of A Refrigerator Crisper

Abstract: This invention A METHOD OF EFFECTIVE COOLING OF REFRIGERATOR CRISPER is aimed at decreasing the temperature in the crisper zone of the refrigerator, without altering the temperatures at freezer and refrigerator zone. The temperature at the freezer of the refrigerator is always the minimum and goes on increasing downwards through the refrigerator and the crisper zones, as air absorbs heat from the stored food. However, it is desired that the temperature at the crisper is lowered without altering the temperatures in the remaining two zones, which is achieved by providing a flexible tube, bypassing the air duct provided on the cover, connecting the freezer and the crisper from the behind. Pressure difference created between the freezer and the crisper allows natural flow of air from the freezer to the crisper, thereby lowering the temperature at the crisper. The said air flow is controlled by a knob provided in the freezer.

APPLICANT

APPLICOMP (INDIA) LIMITED

A Public Limited Company having its Registered Office at
Gangapur, GIN Compound, Station Road, AHMEDNAGAR-414 001 Maharastra, India.
The following specification particularly describes and ascertains the nature of this invention and the manner in which it is to be performed:
- 1 -

This invention A METHOD OF EFFECTIVE COOLING OF A REFRIGERATOR CRISPER is aimed at the effective cooling of a vegetable crisper in a Refrigerator, without altering the temperature of other parts of the Refrigerator, which otherwise would hinder the overall performance of the Refrigerator.
A conventional Refrigerator basically comprises of three compartments. The topmost zone is the Freezer Compartment, followed by Refrigerator Compartment and at the bottom is the Vegetable Crisper, which have been listed as (A), (B) & (C) in that order, on Drawing Sheet No :l of the accompanied drawings. Freezer Compartment (A) is at the lowest temperature and Vegetable Crisper (C) is warmer than other parts of the Refrigerator. The aim of this Invention A METHOD OF EFFECTIVE COOLING OF A REFRIGRATOR CRISPER is that to maintain the temperature at the vegetable crisper at an optimum level, which enables the storage of vegetables for a longer period of time.
Evaporator in the freezer compartment is maintained at a very low temperature. Air is blown on to evaporator by forced circulation. Air
-2-

discharges heat into evaporator coil and becomes very cold. Cold air is forced into lower compartment. Amount of air to different parts of the lower compartment is maintained at such a level, that required temperature is achieved.
The Evaporator coil is located in freezer compartment. Freezer compartment is maintained at lowest temperature. Air which is blown into refrigerator compartment cools various shelves. Air while travelling downward the refrigerator compartment, absorbs heat from the stored food. As such, when air reaches the lowermost part ie., the vegetable crisper, temperature of air is the highest. Hence the temperature at the vegetable compartment or the crisper is always the highest, when compared with any other part of the refrigerator. Consequently, the lowest temperature is on the upper part of the refrigerator, which goes on increasing as we move towards the bottom portion of the refrigerator. As such, temperature at each place is directly proportional with temperature of other part of refrigerator. If temperature of freezer has to be lowered or increased, then corresponding reduction or increase in temperature is seen in lower compartment also and vice versa.
-3-

Figure (2) of Drawing Sheet No:2 of the enclosed drawings, depicts the pattern of forced air circulation, within a refrigerator, air flowing from the cover duct. Generally, forced air flow is restricted only to upper shelves and chiller compartment. Cooling of the vegetable crisper is achieved partly by forced air flow and majority of cooling is by natural circulation of air. That is the reason that the vegetable crisper is always in a warm condition.
In a situation where further cooling of the vegetable crisper is required, it can be achieved by increasing air flow. However, this more air flow will further lower the temperature of the shelves, which is not desirable. A situation will arise where temperature of other shelves is very much lower than that required for that shelf. Hence a method of cooling the vegetable crisper without altering the temperature of other part of refrigerator should be achieved, which is the aim of this Invention.
In this METHOD OF EFFECTIVE COOLING OF A REFRIGERATOR CRISPER a flexible tube is fixed between freezer compartment and the vegetable crisper, behind the crisper, in a manner that
-4-

it covers and bypasses the cover duct air path, without hindering other parts of the refrigerator compartment. Due to the forced air circulation, the pressure always inside the freezer compartment is 1.1 to 1.2 bar. Owing the pressure difference between the freezer and the crisper, a smooth natural circulation of air causes extra cooling of crisper. This air blow is in combination with normal air flow from cover duct. Hence this extra flow of cold air causes additional cooling of crisper. A duct is provided between the freezer and crisper for this purpose. The Inlet duct is provided with a knob (D) on Drawing Sheet No:3, which controls the opening of the duct and thereby regulates the amount of air flow. This tube ends just behind the Crisper compartment and the duct ensures that only cold air is blown in the crisper compartment (E) of Drawing Sheet No:3. Since cold air is not blown from within the Crisper compartment, humidity control is maintained.
The opening into the inlet duct is controlled through the knob (D) on Drawing Sheet No: 3, which could be positioned at various
-5-

levels, MIN ( for Minimum air flow), NORMAL (for Normal air flow) and MAX (for Maximum air flow), which is to be maintained at the particular level, depending upon the degree of crisper cooling desired. During the winter, when the atmospheric temperature is low, crisper cooling knob should be kept in MIN position. Whereas during the summer, the position of the knob should be at MAX.

This MEHTOD OF EFFECTIVE COOLING OF REFRIGERATOR CRISPER has been found to be working very efficiently, without affecting other parts of the Refrigerator.

We Claim,
1) A METHOD OF EFFECTIVE COOLING OF REFRIGERATOR CRISPER, wherein the temperature at the bottom portion of the Refrigerator i.e., the vegetable crisper is reduced without altering the temperature at the other parts within the refrigerator by providing a flexible tube that connects the Freezer Compartment (A) and the Vegetable Crisper (C), located behind the crisper in a manner that the said flexible tube bypasses the cover duct air path, without hindering the other parts of the refrigerator compartment; the pressure difference between the freezer (A) and the Crisper (C) creating a natural circulation of a, which flows from the freezer to the crisper, which causes the desired extra cooing of die Crisper.
2) A METHOD OF EFFECTIVE COOLING OF REFRIGERATOR CRISPER, as claimed m Claim (1), wherein the flow of air through the inlet duct is controller through a knob (D) provided in the freezer (3), having gradations from the Maximum to
-7-

the Minimum level, the maximum level of the knob configured to open the duct in full and the minimum level configured to open the duct to the minimum desired extent, which is to be manually adjusted sad positioned in accordance with the requirements, varying in accordance with the climatic conditions, the maximum level is to be maintained at the peak of the summer and the minimum level to be maintained at the peak of the winter, which regulates the flow of the extra cool air accordingly, in order to achieve the desired results.
3) A METHOD OF EFFECTIVE COOLING OF REFRIGERATOR CRISPER as claimed m Claims (1) ft (2) and as substantially explained herein above with reference to the accompanying drawings.
