A Method Of Improving Wear Resistance Of A Flange Of A High Pressure Pump

Abstract: A high pressure fuel pump 10 is described. The high pressure fuel pump 10 comprises a housing 12, and a cam shaft 14 positioned within the housing 12. A flanged portion 16 of the high pressure fuel pump 10 is adapted to circumscribe the cam shaft 14. The 10 flanged portion 16 is adapted to guide an engine block such that the engine block is flush against the flanged portion 16. An engine bracket is adapted to circumscribe the flanged portion 16 of the high pressure fuel pump 10. The engine bracket is adapted to compress against an O-ring that is defined on an outer circumference of the flanged portion 16 of the high pressure fuel pump 10. The flanged portion 16 of the high 15 pressure fuel pump 10 is cooled to a very cold temperature to facilitate transforming a phase of the flanged portion 16.

Specification

Claims:1. A high pressure fuel pump (10), said high pressure fuel pump (10) comprising:
10 a housing (12);
a cam shaft (14) positioned within said housing (12), said cam shaft (14)
adapted to facilitate delivering pressurized fuel from said high pressure fuel
pump (10) to a fuel injector;
a flanged portion (16) of said high pressure fuel pump (10) adapted to
15 circumscribe said cam shaft (14), said flanged portion (16) adapted to guide an
engine block (18), such that said engine block (18) is flush against said flanged
portion (16);
an engine bracket adapted to circumscribe said flanged portion (16) of said
high pressure fuel pump (10), said engine bracket adapted to compress against
20 an O-ring that is defined on an outer circumference of said flanged portion (16)
of said high pressure fuel pump (10); characterized in that
said flanged portion (16) of said high pressure fuel pump (10) cooled to a very
cold temperature to facilitate transforming a phase of said flanged portion (16).
2. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1 wherein said
flanged portion (16) of said high pressure fuel pump (10) cooled to a very cold
temperature in a bath of liquid nitrogen and holding said flanged portion (16)
of said high pressure fuel pump (10) therein until the temperature of said
flanged portion (16) of said high pressure fuel pump (10) attains the
30 temperature of liquid nitrogen.
3. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 5 1 wherein said
flanged portion (16) of said high pressure fuel pump (10) that is cooled to a
very cold temperature in a bath of liquid nitrogen to facilitate increasing a
strength, hardness and toughness of said flanged portion (16) of said high
pressure fuel pump (10). , Description:A high pressure fuel pump 10 is described. The high pressure fuel pump 10 comprises
a housing 12, and a cam shaft 14 positioned within the housing 12. A flanged portion
16 of the high pressure fuel pump 10 is adapted to circumscribe the cam shaft 14. The
10 flanged portion 16 is adapted to guide an engine block such that the engine block is
flush against the flanged portion 16. An engine bracket is adapted to circumscribe the
flanged portion 16 of the high pressure fuel pump 10. The engine bracket is adapted
to compress against an O-ring that is defined on an outer circumference of the flanged
portion 16 of the high pressure fuel pump 10. The flanged portion 16 of the high
15 pressure fuel pump 10 is cooled to a very cold temperature to facilitate transforming a
phase of the flanged portion 16.
