ASPARAGUS RACEMOSUS (SHATAVARI):
Asparagus Racemosus Chemical composition and key active Nutritive Constituents:
Shatavari is rich in active constituents such as galactose, arabinose, steroidal glycosides and saponins which acts as a direct precursor for lactose production.
It contains steroidal saponins which are also called shatavarins 1-4. Shatwari 1 is the main glycoside which has 3 glucose & rhamnose moiteis attached to sarsasepogenin. Shatwari 4 on the other hand has proteins, alkaloids, tannin, starch and musilage. It also has Isoflavones which includes 8 methoxy 5,6,4 trihydroxyisoflavone 7-0-beta D glucopyranoside. It contains asparagamine, a polycyclic alkaloid and Racemosol which is a cyclic hydrocarbon. The roots contain polysaccharides. It is very low in sodium. It is a good source of folic acid, potassium, dietary fiber, and rutin.
Asparagus racemosus Lactogenic Activity: Five hundred grams of fresh roots of Asparagus racemosus per day, from 21st day after calving till 50 days was fed to lactating buffalos, which resulted in a significant increase in milk yield (Patil and Kanitkar, 1969). Lahar et al., (1991) demonstrated that Asparagus racemosus roots is rich source of minerals and trace elements such as calcium, copper, magnesium, iron, manganese, nickel, and zinc. Presence of calcium in the powder correlates with the analytical results for Galactogogue
The effects of the crude alcoholic extract of Asparagus racemosus 250mg/kg, intramuscularly were studied in post-partum, estrogen-primed and non-primed rats. The extract increased the weight of mammary glands in post-partum and estrogen-primed rats and uterine weight in estrogen-primed group. Increase in the weights of adrenals coupled with depletion of ascorbic acid suggests the release of pituitary adrenocorticotrophic hormone. The growth of the lobulo-alveolar tissue and milk secretion in the estrogen-primed rats may be due to the action of released corticoids or prolactin (Sabnis et al., 1968).
Asparagus racemosus root is the most commonly used traditional medicine in human
beings and its supplementation is recommended during last trimester of pregnancy to first
trimester after birth to the mother to boost milk quality and quantity, immunity of both
mother and fetus and to tone the reproductive system and reproductive health.
It has served as a potential management tool to improve lactation/milk production and
reproductive performance in crossbred dairy cows.
Asparagus racemosus recommended as a galactogogue in case of lactational inadequacy and can improve the milk production and reproduction capacity of dairy animals.
