Abstract: A method of producing dual aspect TV programme in a video camera including broadcasting, reception and storage of the programme comprislng:- - producing a dual aspect video adapting a first aspect between wide (16:9) and standard (4:3), - encoding the produced dual aspect video by variable resolution, - receiving the dual aspect video on 16:9 aspect TV as well as on 4:3 aspect TV by clipping, characterized In that the capturing of the TV programme is achieved in said first aspect ratio for viewing image for both aspect ratios by clipping the image from sides or top and bottom.
Field of Invention: The invention relates to TV production camera, TV
broadcasting system/ Progamme storage and set-top box in general. More particularly, the Invention relates to a method of producing dual aspect TV programme In a video camera Including, broadcasting, reception and storage of the programme.
Background & Prior art:
Patent JP 07-177397A
PURPOSE: To provide a video camera capable of easily photographing with the
intention of reproduction by means of a wide-screen television receiver by displaying
the prescribed photographing range of a view finder.
CONSTITUTION: The video camera is provided with a display means for displaying
the range of the aspect ratio of 9 to 16 to a video within the view finder as shown In
the figure2. One method for the display means Is to mix a display signal generated
by the display means with a photographing video signal so as to provide it for the
view finder. Another method by the display means is to arrange a physical or optical
picture frame on the front part of a photographing monitor picture in the view
finder.
Viewing 16:9 aspect images on 4:3 aspects TV
1) Letterbox-: Letterbox Is blackening screen on 4:3 aspect ratio TV while receiving 16:9 broadcast. This method uses only around 75% of the screen and more than 25% screen Is blank.
2) Zoom image to fill screen: In this method the image is stretched vertically to fill the screen, So that user view the 16:9 video on 4:3 aspect ratio TV on full screen.
3) Clipping from side: In this method the image is clipped from side to side to fill the screen. This is a good method however significant part of image is clipped from side.
Viewing 4:3 aspect image on 16:9 aspect TV:
1) Pillar-boxing: In pillar-boxing the screen is blanked from sides. This method does not use full screen.
2) Zooming the image horizontally to fill the screen: In this method the image Is zoomed horizontally to fill the screen.
3) Clipping image from top and bottom: This method uses zooming the image so that image is clipped from top and bottom filling whole screen.
Edit wide aspect video to convert to 4:3 (PAN and SCAN method)
This method was originally developed for movies. In this method the video is edited manually by selecting the important part of video frame by frame. The method requires editing skills and is very time consuming task. This also requires two channels as 16:9 and 4:3 now become to separate video.
Object of invention:-
The main object of this invention , a method of producing dual aspect TV programme in a video camera including broadcasting, reception and storage of the programme, which eliminates the disadvantages of the prior art.
Fig 1- Show pillar boxing (of related art) which is blacking screen on 4:3 aspect ratio
TV while receiving 16:9 broadcast.
Fig 2- Shows displaying the range of the aspect ratio of 9 to 16 to a video within the
view finder as per Patent No. 3P07-177397
Fig 3- Show 'pillar boxing' (A related art) where the screen is blanked from sides.
Fig 4- Camera Frame lines in view finder (of the invention).
Fig 5- Storage/broadcast resolution (of the invention).
Fig 6- Clipping to view on wide aspect TV(of the invention).
Fig 7- Clipping for viewing on 4:3 aspect dlsplay(of the invention)
The mechanism requires TV programs to be short in aspect ratio in between 16:9 & 4:3 & then while viewing, the video can be made fit for both aspect ratio TV by clipping image from sides or top and bottom.
Bandwidth / storage can be saved as only one HDTV channel is transmitted/stored, with slightly extra bandwidth which covers small top and bottom image of SDTV. Further some more bandwidth can be saved if the SDTV only portion of video is stored at corresponding resolution.
This is a mechanism to help produce a dual aspect program by providing frame edge lines for both ratios in viewfinder of production camera. The viewfinder has edges for both common aspect ratios i.e. 4:3 and 16:9. The area In the viewfinder which is out of 4:3 edges shall be dipped while viewing on 4:3 TV, similarly the area of video
which is out of 16:9 edges shall be clipped white playing this video on wide TV. Thus a same video shall be able to store both aspect TV program. To minimize clipping of video (for both TV aspect ratio as compared to new production aspect ratio) the new aspect ratio can be calculated by making the clipped areas equal for both aspects. The image Is to be broadcasted In the aspect between 16:9 and 4:3 with "4:3 only" part encoded at corresponding resolution white rest is encoded at HD resolution. The same encoding is to be used in storing.
Now the invention all be described in details with the help of accompanying drawings.
The structure of this invention has 3 parts i.e. production of dual aspect video in a first aspect in between wide (16:9) and standard (4:3), Encoding of dual aspect video by variable resolution as described in figure and reception of dual aspect video on 16:9 aspect TV and 4:3 aspect TV by clipping as shown in figure 6 and 7.
The first aspect ratio is average of two aspect ratios which come to be 16:10.5, this first aspect ratio also divides clipped video (as shown in figure 6 and 7) in two video aspects almost equal for same area TV.
Operation of the Invention
1) Produce TV program with the assistance of production camera which as dual aspect production assistance lines in viewfinder as shown in figure 4.
2) Store or broadcast this video one file/channel with two resolutions, the portion of Image which is to be shown on wide TV is encoded on HD resolution while the portion which is only for standard aspect TV is encoded at low(standard resolution). This is shown In figure 5.
3) Reception/displaying on 16:9 aspect TV, white displaying the video on wide aspect TV only the portion encoded In HD format is shown on the display. This is shown In figure 6.
4) Reception/displaying on 4:3 aspect TV, white displaying the video on standard aspect TV the Image Is zoomed to fill screen horizontally (clipping the Image slightly from sideways). This is shown In figure 7.
Effects/ Advantage(s) of the Invention
1) Simultaneous production of two aspect video without additional editing/production cost.
2) Storage /broadcast of dual aspect video (HD video with 16:9 aspect and SD video with 4:3 aspect) on one file/channel with only littte extra bandwidth. Originally this effect would have required two channels.
3) Removal of letter-boxing/pillar-boxlng effects.
1) Dual aspect production assignee lines on vtewfinder of TV production camera for the purpose of simultaneous dual aspect production as shown In figure 4.
2) Video encodings with HD and SD In same stream, as shown In figure 5, for purpose of broadcast or storage.
3) Reception of dual aspect video on 16:9 and 4:3 TV, as shown In figure 6 and 7.
4) Decoding and displaying of dual aspect (as mentioned in figure 5) video.
5) Use of dual aspect video encoding format (described in figure 5) with letterboxlng or pillar-boxing some portion of video.
6) Use of this mechanism with other aspect ratio/resolution video.

6) The method as claimed In claim 1, wherein said encoding of video with HD (High definition Video or video encoding) and SD (Standard definition video or video encoding) can be provided In one file/channel for purpose of broadcasting or storage.
7) The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said reception on 16:9 aspect TV while displaying the video on said wide aspect TV only, the portion encoded
in HD format is shown on the display.
8) The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said reception on 4:3 aspect
TV, while displaying the video on standard aspect TV, the image Is zoomed
to fill screen horizontally by clipping the Image slightly from sideways.
