Abstract: The invention relates with the stock piles measurement is done mostly by manual method using measuring tapes for different sections of piles and arriving at the total volume by approximation method. There are few methods, which employs the use of laser scanners to generate a point cloud to derive the surface profile of the stock piles followed by volumetric analysis using 3D modelling software. These methods are cumbersome and time taking, plus there is a great deal of safety required when the manual measurement is done. Use of a UAV based system not only makes it easier and less time consuming, it also allows a person to take the pictures of the stock piles remotely, thus making it extremely safe. The most important advantage of using UAV based method over existing technology is the level of accuracy in the result. The present invention utilizes a HD camera mounted on a UAV to take pictures of the stock piles, followed by conversion of these pictures to a point cloud to render a 3D surface profile which is used for dimensional analysis of stock piles. Once the dimensional analysis is completed, unwanted elements are removed from the 3d surface profile to render a complete 3D volume profile which enables to accurately measure the volume of the stock piles.
