DESC:FIELD OF DISCLOSURE
The present disclosure generally relates to a mounting arrangement for use in vehicles. Particularly, the disclosure relates to an arrangement for facilitating mounting of a silencer system on a two-wheeler vehicle.
BACKGROUND
A two-wheeler vehicle such as a motorcycle or a scooter is generally equipped with a silencer. The silencer is used for reducing the amount of noise emitted by the exhaust of an internal combustion engine of the two-wheeler vehicle. The silencer is having an elongate tube like structure, referred to as silencer housing that is supported on the vehicle frame by using a conventional mounting arrangement. In case of conventional mounting arrangement the silencer housing is welded onto a footrest mounting bracket that in turn is mounted on the frame of the vehicle for facilitating mounting of the silencer on the frame. The silencer housing is required to be firmly supported so that the silencer is held in a desired position/spacing with respect to the vehicle along at least a portion of the length of the vehicle. In case of the conventional mounting arrangement, the silencer housing is generally directly welded to the foot rest mounting bracket that in turn is mounted on the frame of the vehicle. Alternatively, the silencer housing can also be directly welded to a bracket extending from the frame of the vehicle. The conventional mounting arrangement for mounting the silencer housing is generally configured of a metal strip, wherein ends of the metal strip are welded in a strip on strip configuration to configure a rigid welded joint at the ends and this in turn is welded to either the bracket extending from the frame or the foot rest mounting bracket. The mounting arrangement is subjected to vibrations as the vehicle travels. Due to the vibrations, particularly, lateral and vertical vibrations, the weld joint between the silencer housing and either one of footrest mounting bracket or bracket extending from the frame of the two-wheeler vehicle is subjected to various types of stresses and fails frequently. Further, the conventional mounting system involves welding and the welding beads disturbs the aesthetic look of the mounting arrangement. Further, with such conventional mounting system the vehicle vibrations are transmitted to the silencer housing via the weld, thereby causing damage to the silencer housing and adversely affecting the service life of the silencer housing. More specifically, due to such a rigid mounting of the silencer housing on the frame of the vehicle, the silencer housing held in the conventional mounting is prone to get damaged. Further, the conventional mounting for mounting the silencer housing onto the frame fails to stably support the silencer. Further, with such conventional mounting arrangement for mounting the silencer housing onto the frame there is no scope of adjustment and orienting with silencer housing with respect to other parts of the vehicle and accordingly, assembly of silencer housing on the frame is cumbersome because of interference with other parts during assembly. Further, the conventional mounting arrangement for mounting the silencer housing onto the frame fails to maintain the silencer in the desired orientation/ position and spacing with respect to the frame of the vehicle. Further, with such conventional mounting arrangement, the silencer has to be replaced in case the weld joint between the silencer housing and the either one of footrest mounting bracket or bracket extending from the frame of the two-wheeler vehicle is damaged.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
An arrangement for mounting of silencer housing on a footrest bracket of a two-wheeler vehicle (hereinafter referred to as arrangement)of the present disclosure will now be described with reference to the embodiments which do not limit the scope and ambit of the disclosure. The description provided is purely by way of example and illustration. The embodiment herein and the various features and advantageous details thereof are explained with reference to the non-limiting embodiments in the following description. Descriptions of well-known components and processing techniques are omitted so as to not unnecessarily obscure the embodiments herein. The examples used herein are intended merely to facilitate an understanding of ways in which the embodiments herein may be practiced and to further enable those of skill in the art to practice the embodiments herein. Accordingly, the examples should not be construed as limiting the scope of the embodiments herein.
The present disclosure envisages an arrangement for facilitating mounting of a silencer on a foot rest support bracket of a two-wheeler vehicle. The arrangement facilitates a flexible connection between the silencer and the foot rest support bracket, thereby enabling the arrangement to withstand different types of stresses arising due to vehicle vibration and therefore preventing frequent failure of the arrangement.
Figure 1a – Figure 1b illustrates a schematic representation of a conventional mounting arrangement for mounting silencer housing “S” to a frame “F” of a two-wheeler vehicle, wherein the silencer housing “S” is generally directly welded to a bracket “B” that in turn is mounted on the frame of the vehicle. The bracket “B” may be a footrest mounting bracket. With such configuration welding beads are visible that disturb the aesthetic appeal of the mounting arrangement.
Figure 2a illustrates an exploded view of an arrangement 100 for removably mounting silencer housing to a two-wheeler vehicle, particularly, an arrangement for removably mounting of a tubular silencer housing 04 on a foot rest mounting bracket 20 of a two-wheeler vehicle such that longitudinal axis of the tubular silencer housing 04 is disposed parallel to longitudinal axis of the foot rest mounting bracket 20. Figure 2b illustrates schematic representation of the arrangement 100. Although, the accompanying drawings illustrates the silencer housing 04 mounted on the foot rest mounting bracket 20 of a two-wheeler vehicle as an example, however, the mounting arrangement 100 can be used for mounting the silencer housing 04 on any other bracket extending from the frame of the vehicle. The silencer is having an elongate tube like structure, referred to as the silencer housing 04, is supported by a ring type clamp 10 also referred to as mounting clamp or mounting bracket or holder or sleeve, which in turn is mounted onto the foot rest mounting bracket 20 for facilitating removable mounting of the silencer housing on the foot rest mounting bracket 20. Figures 3a-3c illustrates different views of the ring type clamp 10. The ends of the elongate tube of the silencer housing 04 are closed by covers 06a and 06b. The silencer further includes a plurality of pipes (not labeled in the Figures) disposed inside the silencer housing 04.
Referring to Figure 2a and Figure 2b, the ring type clamp 10 is ending in collars 10a. The collars 10a, also referred to as the clamping collars 10a are fitted on a mounting ear 12 in an operative configuration of the ring type clamp 10. The mounting ear 12 is having a through hole 12a of diameter corresponding to the diameter of the opening of the passageway through the resilient spacer element 16, the diameter of the opening of the passageway through a grommet 14, also referred to as rubber grommet or resilient grommet and diameter of said hole “H” configured on the flange element “F”. Figures 4a-4c illustrates different views of the mounting ear 12. Figures 5a-5c illustrates different views of the grommet 14. Figures 6a-6c illustrates different views of the resilient spacer element 16. The ring type clamp 10 in an operative clamped configuration thereof having a diameter less than diameter of the silencer housing 04 required to be removably mounted. The operative clamped configuration of the ring type clamp 10 is defined when the clamping collars 10a are brought together and fitted on the mounting ear 12 such that the mounting ear 12 is clamped between the clamping collars 10a. More specifically, the ring type clamp 10 includes end portions that configure bend portions or clamping collars 10a that are approximately at 90 degrees with respect to the circumferential body of the ring type clamp 10. The clamping collars 10a include at least two through holes. For clamping the silencer housing 04 by the ring type clamp 10, the silencer housing 04 is received in the ring type clamp 10 and the clamping collars 10a are brought together such that the through holes on the clamping collars 10a are aligned with each other and bolts 11 passes through the through holes configured on the clamping collars 10a for clamping the silencer housing 04.
Figure 2b illustrates an exploded view of the arrangement 100. The arrangement 100 for mounting of the silencer housing 04 on the foot rest mounting bracket 20 includes the ring type clamp 10, a mounting ear 12 having at least the through hole 12a for supporting the ring type clamp 10, a pair of rubber grommets 14, a special washer 15, a resilient spacer element 16, a bolt 17, a washer 18, and a nut 19. The resilient spacer element 16 is having a through passage that is open at both ends and has a resilient ring provided around an operative opening on an operative distal face, wherein diameters of the openings correspond to diameter of said hole “H” configured on the flange element “F”. The resilient spacer element 16 dampens vibrations from being transmitted from the frame of the two-wheeler vehicle to the silencer housing 04 via the foot rest mounting bracket 20. The resilient grommets 14 dampen vibrations reaching the foot rest mounting bracket 20 from being transmitted there-from to the silencer housing 04. With such configuration of the mounting arrangement 100, the pair of rubber grommets 14 and the resilient spacer element 16 dampens the vehicle vibration and prevents vehicle vibrations from being transmitted to the silencer housing 04, thereby preventing damage to the silencer housing and extending the service life of the silencer housing. More specifically, with such configuration, 50 percent of the vehicle vibration are dampened and do not reach the silencer housing 04. The resilient spacer element 16 has a through passageway such that the through passageway configured on the resilient spacer element 16 is aligned with hole “H” configured on the flange element “F” for facilitating mounting of the resilient spacer element 16 on the flange element “F”. The hole of the washer 15 is aligned with the passageway through the grommet 14, the through hole 12a configured on the mounting ear 12, the passageway through the resilient spacer element 16 and the hole “H” configured on the flange element “F”. The ring type clamp 10 is having a slot “S” configured along periphery thereon for reducing the overall weight. The ring type clamp 10 supports the tubular structure of the silencer housing 04 along the periphery thereof. More specifically, the ring type clamp 10 is configured by joining the ends of a metal strip to the mounting ear 12. The special washer 15 and one of the rubber grommets 14 is disposed on either side of the mounting ear 12 while the resilient spacer element 16 along with another rubber grommet 14 is disposed on the other side of the mounting ear 12. Each rubber grommet 14 has a through passage 14a configured thereon. Further, each resilient grommet 14 is fitted over a corresponding resilient ring of the resilient spacer element 16. The bolt 17 passes through the through passageway configured on the special washer 15, the through passages 14a configured on the pair of rubber grommets 14, the through hole configured on the mounting ear 12, a hole “H” configured on the flange “F” extending from the foot rest mounting bracket 20, the washer 18, and the nut 19, thereby mounting the silencer housing 04 on the foot rest mounting bracket 20. The foot rest mounting bracket 20 further includes holes configured thereon for facilitating mounting of the foot rest mounting bracket 20 on the frame of the vehicle. The foot rest mounting bracket 20 further includes receiving jaws “J” for swivably supporting the footrest 40 of the vehicle. With such configuration of the bolt 17, nut 19 and the ring type clamp 10, the grip of the ring type clamp 10 over the silencer housing 04 can be loosened and the silencer housing 04 can be either removed or oriented or adjusted with respect to the other parts of the vehicle. Accordingly, the arrangement 100 for mounting of the silencer housing 04 on the footrest bracket / bracket extending from a frame of a two-wheeler vehicle has provision for adjustment and orienting the silencer housing 04 with other parts of the vehicle to facilitate assembly of silencer housing 04 on the frame without any interference with other parts during assembly.
The mounting ear 12 is of aluminum material and the resilient spacer element 16 is of resilient material. The pair of rubber grommets 14 along with the resilient spacer element 16 absorbs the vibrations and shocks and prevents damage to the arrangement, thereby enhancing the service life of the arrangement 100. Further, the pair of rubber grommets 14 dampens the vibrations and prevents any damage to the arrangement 100 due to vibrations reaching the arrangement 100.
Such modular construction along with use of resilient elements such as the pair of rubber grommets 14 and the resilient spacer element 16 facilitates flexible mounting of the silencer housing 04 on the foot rest mounting bracket 20, thereby allowing a certain degree of play and preventing damage to the arrangement 100 and the silencer housing 04. With such configuration the arrangement is subjected to stresses in the range of 180 to 220 MPA arising due to vehicle vibration as compared to stresses in the range of 500 to 540 MPA experienced by the conventional arrangement . Further, such configuration enhances the service life of the arrangement 100.
Each foot rest of the pair of foot rests is disposed on either side of the two-wheeler for supporting a corresponding foot of a pillion rider, while the pillion rider straddles on the pillion seat of the two-wheeler, thereby facilitating comfortable seating of the pillion rider. Each footrest is pivoted to lower portion of a frame of the two-wheeler and is adapted to support the corresponding foot of the pillion rider. A two-wheeler vehicle having at least a pair of silencers is envisaged as an embodiment of the present invention, wherein at least a silencer is provided on each side of the vehicle. Further, each foot rest may be supported on a corresponding foot rest supporting bracket, which also supports a corresponding silencer housing using the arrangement of the present disclosure.
Figure 7a-Figure 7c illustrates different views of the mounting arrangement 200 in accordance with another embodiment, wherein the mounting arrangement 200 is illustrated dis-assembled from a footrest mounting bracket and the silencer housing 104 removed from a ring type clamp 110 of the mounting arrangement 200. The mounting arrangement 200 includes the ring type clamp 110, a mounting ear 112 having at least a through hole 112a (not illustrated in Figure 7a-Figure 7c) for supporting the ring type clamp 110, at least one rubber grommet 114, a special washer 115, a self lock nut, 116, a socket head screw 117, a socket cap screw 118, a nut, 119, a silencer mounting clamp support 122, a washer for M6, 124 and another washer 126.
A method for removably mounting a silencer housing (04) to a two-wheeler vehicle is disclosed in accordance with an embodiment of the present disclosure. The method includes the steps of receiving the silencer housing (04) in the ring type clamp (10) and tightly gripping the silencer housing (04) within the ring type clamp (10) by bringing together clamping collars (10a) of the ring type clamp (10) and securing the clamping collars (10a) to the mounting ear (12), then arranging at least one washer (15), grommets (14), a resilient spacer element (16), a flange element “F” extending from a bracket of the two-wheeler vehicle and the mounting ear (12) in an aligned configuration so as to configure a passageway through the washer (15), the grommet (14), the through hole (12a) configured on the mounting ear (12), the passageway through said resilient spacer element (16) and the hole “H” configured on said flange element “F”.
