Abstract: A high pressure fuel pump 10 is described. The high pressure fuel pump 10 comprises a barrel 12, and a plunger 14 adapted to reciprocate within barrel 12. A groove 16 is defined from a first end of the plunger 14 and extending partially around its outer 10 circumference to an opposite second end of the plunger 14. A fuel inlet port 18 is defined through the barrel 12 that is adapted to channel fuel from a fuel gallery to a pumping chamber within barrel 12. The fuel inlet port 18 has a circular area of cross section with a linear wedge shaped portion 20 extending therein. The linear wedge shaped portion 20 extending within the fuel inlet port 18 facilitates varying a transition 15 profile of the fuel delivery timing of pressurized fuel from a low load condition to a full load condition of the high pressure fuel pump 10. The fuel inlet port 18 can also have elliptical, non-circular, polygonal or such area of cross section.
Claims:1. A high pressure fuel pump (10), said high pressure fuel pump (10) comprising:
10 a barrel (12);
a plunger (14) adapted to reciprocate within said barrel (12) and deliver
pressurized fuel from within said barrel (12) to a fuel injector via a fuel delivery
valve;
a groove (16) defined from a first end of said plunger (14) and extending
15 partially around an outer circumference of said plunger (14) to an opposite
second end, the groove (16) defined at an upper portion of said plunger (14)
and is adapted to provide advance, retard or combined advance & retard of fuel
delivery timing of pressurized fuel from said high pressure fuel pump (10);
characterized in that
20 a fuel inlet port (18) defined through said barrel (12) that is adapted to channel
fuel from a fuel gallery to a pumping chamber within said barrel (12), the fuel
inlet port (18) having a circular area of cross section with a linear wedge shaped
portion (20) extending within the fuel inlet port (18) thereby facilitating
varying a transition profile of the advance or retard of fuel delivery timing of
pressurized fuel from said high pressure fuel pump (10) from a low load fuel
delivery timing condition to a full load fuel delivery timing condition of said
high pressure fuel pump (10).
2.The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1 wherein the fuel
30 inlet port (18) has an elliptical area of cross section having a major axis parallel
to a horizontal plane, the fuel inlet port (18) having the elliptical area of cross
section having the major axis parallel to the horizontal plane facilitates
increasing the transition profile of advance or retard of the fuel 5 delivery timing
of pressurized fuel from said high pressure fuel pump (10) from a low load
condition to a full load condition of said high pressure fuel pump (10).
3. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1 wherein the fuel
10 inlet port (18) has an elliptical area of cross section having a major axis parallel
to a vertical plane, the fuel inlet port (18) having the elliptical area of cross
section having the major axis parallel to the vertical plane facilitates decreasing
the transition profile of advance or retard of the fuel delivery timing of
pressurized fuel from said high pressure fuel pump (10) from a low load
15 condition to a full load condition of said high pressure fuel pump (10).
4.The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1 wherein the fuel
inlet port (18) having the circular area of cross section with the linear wedge
shaped portion (20) extending within the fuel inlet port (18) facilitates
20 optimizing the transition profile of advance or retard of the fuel delivery timing
of pressurized fuel from said high pressure fuel pump (10) from a low load
condition to a full load condition of said high pressure fuel pump (10).
5.The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1 wherein the fuel
25 inlet port (18) having non-circular, polygonal or such area of cross section
designed to work in tandem with groove (16) facilitates optimizing the
transition profile of advance or retard of the fuel delivery timing of pressurized
fuel from said high pressure fuel pump (10) from a low load condition to a full
load condition of said high pressure fuel pump (10) , Description:A high pressure fuel pump 10 is described. The high pressure fuel pump 10 comprises
a barrel 12, and a plunger 14 adapted to reciprocate within barrel 12. A groove 16 is
defined from a first end of the plunger 14 and extending partially around its outer
10 circumference to an opposite second end of the plunger 14. A fuel inlet port 18 is
defined through the barrel 12 that is adapted to channel fuel from a fuel gallery to a
pumping chamber within barrel 12. The fuel inlet port 18 has a circular area of cross
section with a linear wedge shaped portion 20 extending therein. The linear wedge
shaped portion 20 extending within the fuel inlet port 18 facilitates varying a transition
15 profile of the fuel delivery timing of pressurized fuel from a low load condition to a
full load condition of the high pressure fuel pump 10. The fuel inlet port 18 can also
have elliptical, non-circular, polygonal or such area of cross section.
