Abstract: The present invention is related to a Herbal formulation indicated in the treatment of cough and associated disorders. The present formulation comprises of Adhatoda vasica, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Ocimum sanctum, Alpinia galanga, Cinnamonium zeylanicum, Terminalia belerica, Abies webbiana, Curcuma longa, Pistacia integerrima, Solanum xanthocarpum, Syzygium aromaticum, Mentha piperata, Cinnamonium camphora, Cyperus rotundus, Sitopaladi churna(An Ayurvedic classical formulation), Trikatu(An Ayurvedic classical formulation), Zingiber officinale, Piper longum, Honey, Nausadar and acceptable excipients, which acts synergistically to treat cough and associated disorders.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention is related to an ayurvedic formulation which is used for the treatment of cough.
PRIOR ART TO THE INVENTION
US 2003/0228383 relates to herbal composition for the treatment of chronic respiratory disorders such as cold, cough, allergic asthma, seasonal allergic rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis and the like and a process for preparing the same.
US 7914828 disclose an herbal composition for providing a beneficial effect to the respiratory tract. The composition includes Colt's Foot, Mangosteen, Thyme Leaf, Wild Cherry Bark, Quercitin, Sundew, Butterbur, and Grape Seed Extract. In particular, the composition may prevent or treat cough. Also described are methods of using the herbal composition.
US 7482031 relates to an anti-cough, anti-tussive, and throat soothing synergistic herbal formulation comprising of an extract of Piper cubeba, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Acorus calamus Alpinia galanga, Zingiber officinale and pharmaceutically acceptable additives as a syrup, lozenges or chewable tablets for preventing cracking of voice, dryness of mouth and toning of voice, vocal cord; the present invention also provides a method of preparation of this formulation.
WO 2005/077393 relates to a new herbal pharmaceutical formulation for the treatment and management of cough. The herbal pharmaceutical formulation includes extracts of Adhatoda, Hedychium and Curcuma or a mixture of active ingredients that have been extracted from these herbs with pharmaceutically acceptable carriers and/or diluents. The invention also includes processes for the preparation of herbal pharmaceutical formulations and the isolation, identification and quantitative analysis of individual phytochemicals used in the herbal formulation.
US 2010/0098790 discloses herbal composition for providing a beneficial effect to the respiratory tract. The composition includes Colt's Foot, Mangosteen, Thyme Leaf, Wild Cherry Bark, Quercitin, Sundew, Butterbur, and Grape Seed Extract. In particular, the composition may prevent or treat cough. Also described are methods of using the herbal composition.
US 2007/0060564 relates to a method for relieving cough by using an effective antitussive chemical compound belonging to stemoamide or tuberostemospironine and method for manufacturing pharmaceutical compositions for treating or relieving cough in human and animal subjects which including a stemoamide or tuberostemospironine compound. In addition, the antitussive property of the compounds provides a method for assessing the quality of herbs traditionally used in treating cough by analyzing the content of the effective chemical ingredient, i.e., compounds of stemoamide type and/or tuterostemospironine type. It further provides a method for identifying medicinal herbs which may be used for relieving cough by phytochemical determination of the existence of compounds that are of stemoamide or tuterostemospironine type.
OBJECTIVES OF THE INVENTION
The object of the present invention is to provide a formulation which is helpful in the treatment of cough and other associated symptoms.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a formulation which effectively treats cough with no side effects.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The present invention discloses the herbal composition used for the treatment of cough. The ingredients present in this invention works synergistically so as to provide an effective relief from cough.
The present formulation comprises of Adhatoda vasica, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Ocimum sanctum, Alpinia galanga, Cinnamonium zeylanicum, Terminalia belerica, Abies webbiana, Curcuma longa, Pistacia integerrima, Solanum xanthocarpum, Syzygium aromaticum, Mentha piperata, Cinnamonium camphora, Cyperus rotundus, Sitopaladi churna(An Ayurvedic classical formulation), Trikatu(An Ayurvedic classical formulation), Zingiber officinale, Piper longum, Honey, Nausadar and acceptable excipients.
Adhatoda vasica (Vasaka) is used in various chest affections and enjoys wide reputation as an expectorant in the indigenous system of medicine. The leaves, the roots and flowers of Adhatoda vasica are extensively used in indigenous medicine as remedy for cold, cough, bronchitis and asthma. In chronic bronchitis and asthma it is said to be very useful. A decoction of the leaves of Vasaka may be used to help with cough and other symptoms of colds. The soothing action helps irritation in the throat and the expectorant will help loosen phlegm deposits in the airway.
Glycyrrhiza glabra (Mulethi) exhibits expectorant action. This action is produced due to a reflex expectorant action from the gastrointestinal tract mediated by the embryonic neural link between the mucous membranes of the GIT and the respiratory tract. Glycyrrhizin exerts a local effect in the GIT upon ingestion.
This effect can best be described as a slight irritation of the mucous membranes, which stimulates the secretion of mucous from the respiratory tract mucous membranes. This helps to loosen tenacious sputum and promote its removal from the respiratory tract.
Glycyrrhiza glabra also has a demulcent action which is soothing to irritated mucous membranes.GA (Glycyrrhizic acid) and its derivatives have an anti-tussive effect similar to codeine.
Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi) is an important constituent of many Ayurvedic cough syrups and expectorants. It helps to mobilize the mucus in bronchitis and asthma. Chewing tulsi leaves relieves cold and flu.The herb is very useful in the treatment of respiratory system disorders. A decoction of the leaves, with honey and ginger is an effective remedy for bronchitis, asthma, influenza, cough and cold. For the immediate relief in the cases of influenza the decoction of the leaves, cloves and common salt is given for immediate relief.
Alpinia galangal (Kulanjan) has a bronchodilator and anti¬inflammatory effect on bronchioles. It is also useful in throat related problems, cough and asthma.
Cinnamonium zeylanicum (Dalchini) helps in cold, flu, influenza, sore throat and congestion. Colds, cough, sinus congestion, bronchitis with excess avalambaka kapha; it clears mucus and encourages the circulation of vata throughout the respiratory system.
Terminalia belarica (Vibhitaki) works especially on throat have curative effect on hoarseness of voice. Bibhitaki was found to have anti-asthmatic, anti-spasmodic, expectorant and anti-tussive activities .
In Ayurveda, the traditional system of Indian medicine, this plant had been described for using against swasa (chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases), kasa (cough). The leaves of this plant have been traditionally used for their expectorant, decongestant.The decoctions of the leaves are useful orally in cases of cough, phthisis, asthma, chronic bronchitis and other pulmonary infections. Furthermore, leaves of the plant have been used traditionally for its chemotherapeutic efficacies in several ailments like hoarseness, chronic bronchitis and other pulmonary affections.
Curcuma longa (Haldi) is very effective in bronchitis, productive cough and asthma.Drug is reported to have a relaxation effect on the bronchial tubes and depressant action on respiration.
Pistacia integerrima (Kakrasringhi) is an alternative, expectorant, carminative and soothes irritability of the respiratory tract. It is known to help in cough, asthma and anorexia. It gives strength to mucus membrane. Pistacia integerrima gall is used as an astringent to help alleviate coughs and edema in the lungs..
Solanum xanthocarpum (Kantakari) is used to cure bronchial asthma; eosinophilia and cough .It is also used in the treatment of dislodging tenacious phlegm. The traditional claim for the usefulness of this herb in bronchial asthma has been confirmed by clinical studies . The beneficial effect of the drug on bronchial asthma may be attributed to the depletion of histamine from bronchial and lung tissue.It is useful in coughs and other respiratory disorders. It improves the breath and is a popular remedy for sore throat and headaches.
Mentha piperita (Pudina) is useful for many kinds of respiratory conditions, including bronchitis, and pneumonia. It is useful for treating coughs, spasmodic coughs, asthma, sinusitis, headache,
colds & migraine, anti-inflammatory and breaks down the mucus of respiratory disease.
Cinnamomum camphor (Kapur) most widely used application is as a decongestant. Its distinctively strong aroma helps open congested airways (nasal, lung, bronchial). Although most forms of camphor are to be used strictly externally, white camphor oil is safe to ingest as a cough suppressant. Camphor oil has a very strong odor and may be helpful in relieving congestion of the sinuses and chest in cases of flu, colds and other upper respiratory tract ailments.
Cyperus rotundus (Motha) has anti-inflammatory role on respiratory system .Cures bacterial infections and acts as mild mucolytic.
Sitopaladi churna (Ayurvedic classical formulation) has been found effective in cough associated with various other respiratory problems. lt also increases the appetite, helps digestion, and provides strength to the body. It is recommended for seasonal coughs and colds, as it is a very good expectorant.

It is well known for its warming expectorant action on the upper respiratory tract, and this is why Chinese herbalists have traditionally used ginger to treat colds and influenza. Zingiber officinale can minimize symptoms of the common cold, allergies, and other respiratory conditions. Ginger is a natural antihistamine and decongestant. It seems to provide a measure of relief from cold and allergy symptoms by dilating constricted bronchial tubes. It is often included in herbal decongestant blends that are designed For sinusitis and other respiratory complaints..
Primarily used for cold, wet and 'mucusy' conditions of the ungs. Pippali encourages vasodilation and therefore increases circulation, specifically to the lungs. Used with honey in asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia and compromised immunity in the respiratory system. Pippali is useful in respiratory discomfort (including asthmatic condition) and cough.
It thins out accumulated mucous and helps its elimination from the respiratory passages. It also tones up the pulmonary parenchyma and thereby prevents the production of mucous in future.
Reduces viscosity of sputum, making it easier to expectorate.
Trikatu is a classical ayurvedic formulation which contains Zingiber officinale, Piper nigrum, and Piper longum. Trikatu is a very powerful stimulant for respiratory systems.Because of its strong heating affects it brings about the removal of cold, congestion. Trikatu acts as rejuvenate for the lungs and Kapha. Trikatu is an anti-mucus. Trikatu is used internally in the treatment of, asthma, bronchitis, coughs.
Each 5 ml of the formulation comprises the quantity of ingredients in the following range-

The present invention can be formulated, but not limited to, in the following manner-

Method of preparation-Take the ingredients from serial number 1 to 17. Grind them with 10 mm sieve. Add four times water of the crude herbs and boil it till the water gets reduced to 1/4th.Let it cool. Then mix preservative, flavor and sugar solution. Filter the solution and store.

1) A herbal formulation used for treating cough comprising Adhatoda
vasica, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Ocimum sanctum, Alpinia galanga,
Cinnamonium zeylinacum, Terminalia belerica, Abies webbiana,
Curcuma longa, Pistacia integerrima, Solanum xanthocarpum, Syzygium
aromaticum, Mentha piperata, Cinnamonium camphora, Cyperus
rotundus, Sitopaladi churna, Trikatu, Zingiber officinale, Piper longum,
Honey, Nausadar and acceptable excipients.
2) The ingredients as claimed in claim 1 are in the following range-

3) The acceptable excipients as claimed in claim 1 are preservatives, flavoring agents and sugar solution.
