Abstract: ABSTRACT Treating cancer is a major challenge faced by humans now a day. Even though, many chemicals and drugs are available to treat cancer, herbal plants are still considered as an effective source of phytochemicals with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and free radicals scavenging activity. This study is to show the efficacy of Mollugo cerviana aqueous extract on normal cells (Vero) and breast cancer cells (MDA MB-231 and MCF-7). The crude aqueous extract was prepared using the ultra-sonication assistant method. The proliferation assay was performed on Vero, MDA MB-231 and MCF-7 at different concentrations of aqueous extract. At high concentrations of the extract inhibition in cell proliferation was observed on MDA MB-231 and MCF-7 cells when the effect was not significant in Vero cells. The calculated IC50 value of crude aqueous extract for MDA MB-231 and MCF-7 cell lines are 114.26 and 106.99 \x%fvc\L, respectively. The presence of flavonoids, tannins, and saponins could be the reason for the selective anticancer activity. Thus the study shows efficiency of the M. cerviana aqueous extract as an anticancer agent. Also, the process is cost-effective since the plant is easily available in India, and a simple extraction procedure is followed.
1. A novel extract having anticancer activity is obtained from Mollugo cerviana.
2. The novel extract with anticancer activity as per claim 1, wherein the extract is obtained from aerial plant parts of the said plant Mollugo cerviana.
3. The novel extract with anticancer activity as per claim 1, wherein nanopore water is used as the extraction solvent.
4. The novel extract with anticancer activity as per claim 1, wherein the extract is prepared by Ultrasonication Assisted Extraction (UAE) method.
5. The novel extract with anticancer activity as per claim 1, wherein the extract induces apoptosis in the breast cancer cell lines (MDA MB-231 and MCF-7).
6. The novel extract with anticancer activity as per claim I, wherein the IC50 values for MDA MB-231 and MCF-7 cell lines are 114.26 and 106.99 ug/mL, respectively.
