Abstract: A novel process for the preparation of 2-methyl-1-phenyl-2-propanol acetate and 2-methyl-1-phenyl-2-propanol from the mixture of 2-methyl-1-propene and 2-methyl1-3-phenyl-1-propene comprises the combination of two steps of (i) hydrochlorination of the mixture of 2-methyl-2-phenyl-1-prpene and 2-methyl1-3-phenyl-1-propene with dry HCl gas at 10-15C,(ii) acylation of hydrochlorinted olefin with anhydrous zinc zcetate in glacial acetic acid at 50C, and 5h with contant speed of stirring. The mixture containing 58% acetate 11% carbinol and 31% olefin is then vacuum distilled to give the3 excellent yields of acetate, and carbinol
