Abstract: A planetary gear reduction system for the starter motor of a motor vehicle, comprising a sun gear engaged with planetary gears; a clutch bearing mounted on the armature shaft of the said motor, said sun gear, in turn, being mounted on the said clutch bearing; and an output shaft coupled to the drive pinion of the starter motor.
This invention relates to a planetary gear reduction system for the starter motor of a motor vehicle.
Conventionally, the planetary gear reduction system for the starter motor of a motor vehicle consists of a sun gear directly mounted on the armature shaft of the said motor. The armature shaft is ultimately connected to an output shaft through planetary gear train which is coupled to the drive assembly of the starter motor.
On the other hand, in the invention proposed herein, the sun gear is not directly mounted on the armature shaft, but a dutch-bearing is first mounted on the armature shaft with the sun gear mounted on the clutch bearing.
The advantage accruing from this invention is that the clutch of the drive assembly is dispensed with, whereby the number of components of the drive assembly is reduced; consequently reducing the corresponding cost and weight.
This invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate, by way of example, and not by way of limitation, one of possible embodiments of the proposed planetary gear reduction system.
The embodiment is seen to have a sun gear S engaged with planetary gears P. A clutch-bearing C is mounted on the armature shaft A of the starter motor. The sun gear S , in turn, is mounted on
the said clutch bearing C. The output shaft O is coupled to the drive pinion D of the starter motor.
As a consequence of the above arrangement, the foregoing advantages accrue.
It will be appreciated that various other embodiments are possible without departing from the scope and ambit of this invention.
We Claim:
1. A planetary gear reduction system for the starter motor of a
motor vehicle, comprising a sun gear engaged with planetary
gears; a clutch bearing mounted on the armature shaft of the
said motor, said sun gear, in turn, being mounted on the said
clutch bearing; and an output shaft coupled to the drive pinion
of the starter motor.
2. A planetary gear reduction system for the starter motor of a
motor vehicle, substantially as herein described with reference
to, and as illustrated in, the accompanying drawings.
