Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a portable device for scraping coconut pulp from the coconut shell. More specifically, the present invention relates to an automatic, portable, muted, coconut pulp Scraping device. Background of Invention
Coconut fruit is made up of a thick fibrous fruit coat known as the husk, a hard protective endocarp or shell (hereafter called shell) and a fleshy white edible pulp enclosed in the shell. Coconut has a large spherical or elliptical hard shell and the outer dimension of the coconuts shells varies from 3.5 to 6 inches. The removal of this pulp from the shell is a laborious task. Conventionally, the pulp is scraped out of the shell by holding the scraper plate by the legs in a sitting position and pushing the halved shell of the coconut back and forth by both hands over the scraper. This technique puts great strain on arms and legs of the person scraping and often leads to hand injury due to slippage.
Tabletop manual coconut scraper are also available in the market where the operation involves fixing the scraper on table by a fixing mechanism and then holding the shell with pulp on the grating blade and manually turning the shaft connected to a grating blade to rotate the blade. The shell is then pressed onto the rotating blade to grate the pulp. This involves both hands of the user and considerable muscle power. Improvement over table mounted coconut graters are electric power graters where the shaft is rotated by a driving means such as a motor power. Although this feature facilitates minimal effort of muscle power, the user has to still hold the shell by hand over the scraper and will be restricted to the machine until the process of scraping is completed. Also, chances of injury due to accidental slippage of hand remain. US6722269 describes a coconut shredding/grating apparatus that includes a base member including main base portion having top and bottom sides; and also includes a housing being mounted upon the top side of the base member and having front, rear and side walls, and also having a hole being disposed through the front wall; and further includes a coconut shredding assembly including a motor being disposed in the housing and having a motor shaft, and also including a control assembly for energizing and operating the motor, and further including a coconut shredding member being detachably connected to the motor shaft for rotation therewith; and also includes a coconut support assembly including a coconut support member being removably secured upon the base member; and further includes a tray being
removably disposed upon the base member for receiving shredded and grated
coconut.
1649/CHE/2006 discloses a Semi-Automatic Coconut Scraping machine has three
main parts. One is the rotating Coconut holding mechanism, which is a semi-spherical
dome inside which the split coconut is placed, with the help of a tightening mechanism
which hold the coconut from three sides. It is rotated with the help of an AC motor.
The coconut is scrapped with the help of a Scraping blade which is bud shaped and
which can be moved to any part of the rotating coconut with the help of a lever which
is placed behind the coconut scrapper shaft and which moves up and down and
forward and backward according to our need and the coconut can be scrapped without
much efforts when it come into contact with the kernel of the coconut. It uses AC
motor having a quarter horse power and 1440 rpm.
A problem with US6722269 and 1649/CHE/2006 is that their coconut holding
mechanism or coconut support member is a fixed system that has to be manually
maneuvered to allow uniform grating of the entire interior surface of pulp side of the
shell. Moreover both the devices are complicated, bulky having numerous
attachments. Additionally, 1649/CHE/2006 uses an AC motor having a quarter horse
power and 1440 rpm that creates a lot of noise and consuming high energy in the
process. Also, none of the above patents states as to how the coconut shells of varying
sizes canbe shredded using the same device.
Thus, none of the above state of the art device individually or collectively
attempts to provide a portable automatic coconut pulp scraper functional with
coconut shell of varying sizes and eliminates the need for any physical contact of
the user during the scraping process, thereby preventing any kind of slippage
accident.
Accordingly there was a long felt need to have a portable automatic coconut pulp
scraper functional with coconut shell of varying sizesand requiring no involvement
at the user end during scraping process. Also, there was a need for such portable
automatic coconut pulp scraperto beeconomical, time saving, noise free and energy
efficient.

In accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention, the power source for energizing the gear motor may be rechargeable battery, solar, electric and the like. In accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention, there is provided a portable automatic coconut scraper fitted with an overload protection that stops the gear motor in case of overload.
In an aspect of the invention, a method of operation of a portable automatic coconut scraper comprises of loading a half shell of a split coconut in the coconut holder, by maneuvering the lever, such that the pulp side is in contact with the scraping member. The switching means is switched on to activate the gear motor for rotation of the shaft. The shaft rotates the scraping member at a preferable speed of 200 rpm with torque of 11 Kg Cm when performing the scraping of thepulp. The metal frame exert pressure on the scraping member during operation and the coconut holder hold the coconut shell firmly onto the scraping member while the scraping member constantly adjust its dimension with changing dimension of inner surface of the coconut due to scraping off of pulp, thereby ensuring uniform scraping of the entire interior surface of the pulp side of coconut shell within 4 to 5 minutes. The scraped coconut pulp is collected in the collector.
The speed, torque and energy efficiency of the machine using a 12 V DC gear motor is documented through numerous and presented in Table 1:
Table 1
si no. Speed (in rpm) Stall
Torque(in Kg cm) No load current Maximum Current ( in Ampere) Time taken for complete Scraping of a half shell of a split coconut( mins)
