Abstract: The invention relates to a procedure for functional dielectric coating on the surface of metallic conductors, like commercial aluminum alloys or aluminum metal is described. The surface of the metallic conductor, i.e., aluminum metal or aluminum alloy is coated with a ‘nano-composite architecture’ comprising three-layered structure. The first layer of the ‘three-layered structure’ in the so-called ‘nano-composite architecture’ is oxide/hydroxyl coupled amino-silane layer that has been generated by etching or by chemically treating the metal conductor surface with an acid (chromate ions in combination of either sulphuric acid and/or phosphoric acid and small amounts of nitric acid as well) followed by treatment with ‘amino-silane’. While the second layer is epoxy oligomer layer followed by the third layer is ‘nano-structured alumina modified epoxy polymeric layer’ respectively. The coated structure has very good mechanical strength besides excellent scratch resistance and also minimize the partial discharge (PD) profile, later of which would arise in the high voltage region in a gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) system, when such metallic conductors are used as HT conductors and or enclosures or in similar electrical equipments. Such coated structures on metal conductors along with its specific properties could be ideal for minimizing partial discharge level of metallic conductors in high voltage GIS system in particular.
