Abstract: A process of manufacturing "Fire-Retardant, Waterproof, Shock absorbing, High Temperature withstanding Electrical & Thermal Insulation Tape" comprises of coating a woven glass fabric depositing a formulated silicone elastomer to the required extent by use of conventional coating methods in one or multiple stages, on one or both the sides of the said glass fabric coupled with lamination in situ to a non-woven felt, followed by drying/curing methods, the said formulated silicone elastomer is prepared by compounding two or more silicone elastomers on a two-roll milling machine with conventional fillers and two or more additives including curing agents to impart the properties of fire-retardancy, the said compounded silicone elastomer is then optionally dispensed in solvent of aliphatic/aromatic nature to obtain consistency and flow properties required and commensurate with the coating method and equipment to be used, the coated, laminated tape so obtained is cut to desired sizes and shapes

FIELD OF THE INVENTION:
The invention relates to manufacturing "Fire-Retardant, Waterproof, Shock absorbing, High Temperature withstanding Electrical and Thermal Insulation Tape" & the process of manufacturing the same.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PRIOR-ART:
Glass insulation comes in a wide variety of forms including solid glass, fiber tapes, fiberglass sheets and mats, woven tubing and cloth, and various composites. High temperature operation is a key feature. The other thermal insulation materials generally available and used in industry are in the form of non-woven felts and/or foams, largely without any water proof properties and in case of waterproof laminations, these are non fire retardant and many a times are thermally and electrically conductive like aluminum foil or metallised polyester laminations.
A variety of silicone rubbers are available for insulating and cushioning assemblies. Silicone rubbers exhibit a wish list of characteristics including superb chemical resistance, high temperature performance, good thermal and electrical resistance, long term resiliency and easy fabrication. Liquid silicone rubbers are available in electrical grades for conformal coating, potting and gluing. Silicone rubbers filled with conducting fillers are available for applications requiring thermal conductivity.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION:
Glass cloth impregnated with a silicone resin binder makes an excellent laminate with good dielectric loss when dry. In the present invention, an attempt has been made to prepare a fire-retardant, silicone-resin impregnated glass cloth, laminated in situ to non-woven felt, which is generally and commercially available in different forms and can be made up from known fibers such as polyester, wool, glass, aramide, silica, quartz, ceramic and PBO (phenylenebenzobisoxazole). The laminated felt is capable of withstanding high temperatures for the purpose of high-temperature thermal insulation with an added advantage of having water proof properties, it is fire retardent, exhibits good electrical insulation and thermal insulation properties. The thickness of felt can vary from 0.5 m.m. to 2".
The manufacturing of the "Fire-Retardant, Waterproof, Shock absorbing, High Temperature withstanding Electrical and Thermal Insulation Tape" comprises of coating a woven glass fabric of the required construction, commensurate with the desired properties of thickness and strength, by depositing a formulated silicone elastomer on one side of the fabric to the extent of 60 to 150 gm per square meter. The deposition is carried out by use of conventional coating methods in one or multiple stages followed by drying/curing operation which is also carried out by known conventional methods.


The formulated silicone elastomer is again coated on the other side of the fabric to the extent of 60 to 150 gm per square meter and the non-woven felt is laminated in situ. The deposition is carried out by use of conventional coating methods in one or multiple stages followed by drying/curing operation which is also carried out by known conventional methods.
The formulated silicone elastomer is prepared by compounding two or more silicone elastomers having different hardness on a two-roll milling machine, with fillers / additives, such as inorganic metal oxides & curing agents, as applicable, to impart the required property of fire-retardancy. The said compounded silicone elastomer is then optionally dispensed in solvent of aliphatic/aromatic nature to obtain consistency and flow properties required and commensurate with the coating method and equipment to be used.
The coated fabric so obtained is cut to desired sizes and shapes in line with the intended application. The said tape is desired to have a nominal thickness varying from 1 mm to 20 mm, an electrical strength of over 4 kv/layer. The said tape has the following features:-
(a) Fire retardancy,
(b) High electrical insulation,
(c) Anti-tracking,
(d) High-temperature withstanding capability,
(e) Water proof properties and
(f) Shockjabsorbing due to the coushning effect of the felt.
The high temperature withstanding (Class-H) product successfully passes the UL-94 flame retardancy test at V-0 level. The tape can be used at a temperature of 180 degree C for continuous applications and at higher temperatures for a short time.

The said tape finds a variety of applications involving the requirements of high temperature resistance, electrical and thermal insulation, fire retardant property along with shock absorbing capabilities. Some of the applications explored are ranging from wrapping on electrical cables in demanding areas in industrial set ups to its use as thermal insulation & cushioning pads for aerospace insulations. The fibre cloth construction was designed to give optimum tensile strength in both directions and to prevent distortion of


le felt during application abuse without sacrificing the flexibility, so that it is onformable to wrap firmly on surfaces of varying shapes & without snapping.


WE CLAIM
1. A process of manufacturing "Fire-Retardant, Waterproof, Shock Absorbing, High Temperature withstanding Electrical & Thermal Insulation Tape" comprising of coating a woven glass fabric by depositing a formulated silicone elastomer to the required extent by using conventional coating methods on one or both the sides of the said glass fabric coupled with lamination in situ to a non-woven felt, followed by drying/curing methods; the said compounded silicone elastomer is then optionally dispensed in aliphatic/aromatic solvent to obtain consistency and flow properties required and commensurate with the coating and the coated laminated tape so obtained is cut to desired sizes and shapes.

A process of manufacturing "Fire-Retardant, Waterproof, Shock Absorbing, High Temperature withstanding Electrical & Thermal Insulation Tape" as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the said formulated silicone elastomer is prepared by compounding two or more silicone elastomers on a two-roll milling machine, with fillers / additives, such as inorganic metal oxides & curing agents, as applicable to impart the required property of fire-retardancy.
3. A process of manufacturing "Fire-Retardant, Waterproof, Shock Absorbing, High Temperature withstanding Electrical & Thermal Insulation Tape" as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the said tape has a nominal thickness ranging from 0.5 mm to 50 m.m. and has an electrical strength of over 4 kv/layer.

A process of manufacturing "Fire-Retardant, Waterproof, Shock Absorbing, High Temperature withstanding Electrical & Thermal Insulation Tape" as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the said non-woven felt made up from known fibers such as polyester, wool, glass, aramide, silica, quartz, ceramic & PBO (phenylenebenzobisoxazole).
5. A process of manufacturing "Fire-Retardant, Waterproof, Shock absorbing, High Temperature withstanding Electrical & Thermal Insulation Tape" as claimed in Claim 1, 2 & 3, wherein the said non-woven felt can be obtained from a simple process form of random laid, to fibre reinforced, air laid, needled, spun & made from a single or multiple bats.
6. A process of manufacturing "Fire-Retardant, Waterproof, Shock Absorbing, High Temperature withstanding electrical Thermal Insulation Tape" as substantially described hereinabove.
