Abstract: A removable and adjustable backrest assembly for a motorcycle comprising a backrest mounted on the grab handles of the motorcycle; locking means for firmly securing the backrest; means for adjustment of the backrest in different positions ; said back rest being supported on support brackets connected to mounting brackets, said support brackets being slidable along the mounting brackets for adjustment of backrest at different positions with respect to the seat of the motorcycle; a cushion for the backrest contoured to merge with the seat surface of the motorcycle; a position adjustor provided on both the sides of the backrest for being pulled out to unlock and then slid to different positions for adjusting the backrest position; a utility space provided at the rear of the said cushion.
This invention relates to a removable and adjustable back rest for a motorcycle. The term "motorcycle in this specification and Claims means and includes motorcycles properly so called, scooters, vehicles for handicapped persons, autorickshaws, among others to which this invention is applicable.
The backrest provides a firm support for the rider by supporting his lower back and thus helps in reducing the riding fatigue. It supports the rider by giving him support during braking and acceleration of the vehicle.
It promotes better balance in two wheelers and greater physical integration between man and machine.
The backrest proposed herein is easily assembled and dismantled It does not affect the normal functioning of the vehicle. At the same time it is aesthetically pleasing.
The backrest proposed herein is adjustable to suit the body proportions of the rider and his comfort requirements.
Conventionally backrests are either integrated with the frame or seat of the motorcycle or are available with a removable arrangement requiring adequate tooling effort to firmly fix the backrest on the motorcycle structure. On the other hand the backrest according to this invention is readily mountable in, and removable from, place on the vehicle.
This invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate, by way of example, and not by way of limitation, one of possible embodiments of this invention,

Fig 1 shows a side elevation view in partial section of a motorcycle with the backrest. The backrest assembly is mounted on the grab handle L and grab handle R that in turn is fixed to the motorcycle at the shock absorber top mounting point. A provision for firmly locking the backrest in place and a provision for adjusting the position of the backrest to accommodate riders of different physical proportions are made.
Fig 2 is a perspective view of a motorcycle showing backrest embodying the mounting details of backrest on the motorcycle. The backrest can be easily assembled on the
motorcycle without tooling effort. The backrest cushion is contoured to merge with the seat surface of the motorcycle. A position adjustor is provided on both the sides of the backrest assembly, which can be pulled out to unlock and then slide the backrest to adjust in different positions.
Fig 3 is a side elevation view of a backrest showing backrest with support bracket L, mounting bracket L, position adjustor, support bracket R and mounting bracket R. The backrest cushion is supported on support bracket L and support bracket R, both of which in turn is connected with mounting bracket L and mounting bracket R respectively. Support bracket L can be slid along the mounting bracket L for adjustment of backrest at different positions with respect to seat of motorcycle; similar adjustments can be ddne for support bracket R.
Fig 4 is a rear side view of a motorcycle showing the mounting of the backrest on the grab handle. To assemble the backrest assembly on the motorcycle, support bracket L and R can be slid out of the backrest cushion, thus to avoid the interference of support bracket L and R and mounting bracket L and R with the vehicle
geometry. Backrest assembly is positioned on the seat and support bracket L and R can be then slid inside the backrest cushion causing mounting bracket L and R to get engaged with the slot provided in the grab handle L and R. As mounting bracket L is pushed inside the slot of grab handle L, a lock plate positioned inside the mounting bracket L, which in turn is loaded with the spring, gets forced to move inside the mounting bracket L and as the lock plate comes out to the other side of the grab handle L spring action forces it to come out and thus locking action is provided to resist backrest assembly coming out of grab handle. A chamfer is provided along one side of lock plate which create a downward component of force to push lock plate inside the mounting bracket L while engaging the support bracket L with grab handle L; while in the reverse direction pulling mounting bracket L out of the grab handle L, there is no vertical force to allow lock plate to go inside the mounting bracket L, thus locking of backrest assembly is achieved. Similar arrangement is provided with support bracket R, mounting bracket R and grab handle R.
Fig 5 is a side elevational view of backrest cushion showing the slot inside, along which
support bracket L Additionally a utility space is provided on the rear of the backrest cushion. Backrest cushion can be made of foam, or air filled bag, or with any other stuffing material.
Fig 6 can be slid in and out of backrest cushion.
Fig 7 shows the assembly of the support bracket L with the backrest cushion, where the arrow indicates the direction of motion of support bracket L inside the backrest cushion. A provision for locking is incorporated to lock the support bracket L and support bracket R in the assembled condition, which prevents the removal of the backrest unless unlocked.
Fig 8 is a side elevation view of support bracket L showing a metal projection to facilitate positive engagement of the support bracket L with the mounting bracket L.
In Fig 9 a slot is featured on mounting bracket L, inside which metal projection provided on the support bracket L could be slid along the arrow indicated in Fig 10.
Fig 11 shows a side elevation view of mounting bracket L. It is provided with different holes to
occupy position adjustor for the adjustment of backrest assembly in different positions. A lock plate is placed on the mounting bracket Lit is provided with cylindrical projections or any other projections of known shape that can be slid in and out of the cylindrical holes provided on mounting bracket L in the direction indicated by arrow.
Fig 12 shows the exploded view of support bracket L and mounting bracket L assembly. Spring 1 & 2 are placed on the cylindrical holes provided on the mounting bracket L As lock plate is given vertically downward force, the spring land 2 get compressed and the lock plate moves inside the mounting bracket. As the lock plate is set free, it again resumes the initial position by moving with the rebound force of spring 1 and 2. The position adjustor along with the spring 3 is set to place through the cylindrical hole provided in the support bracket L Position adjustor loaded with the spring 3 can be engaged with any of the different holes provided in the mounting bracket L Position adjustor can be pulled and slid to fit in other holes provided to adjust the backrest assembly.
Figs 13 and Fig 14 show the assembled view of the support bracket L, mounting bracket L along with the position adjustor, spring 1, spring 2, spring 3 and position adjustor assembled in their respective positions.
