Specification

FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to oil burners. More particularly, the present
invention relates to a removable union assembly with clamping means of oil
burners employed in power boilers.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Oil burners are used in fired boilers. Oil burners in power boilers, perform
basically three operations viz. a) Atomization of fuel oil, i,e breaking up of fuel oil
into mist like spray, b) injecting the atomized fuel oil into the furnace, and c)
Mixing of the fuel oil spray thoroughly with an adequate supply of air.
A thorough mixing of the fuel oil spray with an adequate supply of air must be
performed on the fuel immediately preceding and at the initiation of the
combustion process. These factors influence the combustion and boiler
efficiency. And these are the functions accomplished by the oil burners.
Oil burners mainly consist of an atomizer assembly and a stationary union
assembly. The atomizer assembly breaks up the fuel oil into a mist-like spray and
injects it into the furnace. The atomizer assembly essentially comprises a
removable union assembly, and oil pipe, an atomizing steam/air pipe, nozzle
body, a spray plate and a cap nut. The removable union assembly of the
atomizer assembly is manufactured from steel blocks with high precision and
care.

In high pressure power boilers, oil burners are located either in the water walls
or in the corner windboxes. Presently used removable union assemblies are
depicted in fig. 1 and fig. 2.
As shown in fig. 1, a removable union assembly (01) of an oil burner comprises
an oil port (02), an atomizing steam/air port (03), a plurality of plugs (04), a seal
ring hub (05), and a "0" ring (06). On mounting the removable union assembly
(01) a stationary union assembly (07), the oil port (02) and steam/air port (03)
are matched with corresponding stubs (08) provided on the stationary union
assembly (07). The removable union assembly is held in position by a clamp (09)
provided in the stationary union assembly (07). To arrest leakage through the
stubs (08), a plurality of copper cladded asbestos gaskets (10) are used. Leak
tightness is dependent on the degree of tightness used on the clamp (09). Flow
of oil and steam/air through the oil and steam/air pipes are ensured by
connecting the respective ports in the stationary union assembly (07)
respectively through one each oil hose (11) and steam/air hose (12).
Figure-2 shows another prior art removable union assembly (01) of an oil burner
which comprises an oil port (02), an atomizing steam/air port (03), a seal ring
hub (04) and a "O" ring (05). Removable union assembly (01) is made of a steel
block. Removable union (01) is held in position by a clamping means (06)
provided in a stationary union assembly (07). Flow of oil and steam/air through
the oil pipe and steam/air pipe are ensured by providing quick connecting
couplings to connect an oil hose (08) and a steam/air hose (09) to the respective
ports (02,03).

OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
It is therefore, an object of the present invention to propose a removable union
assembly for power boilers, which eliminates the disadvantages of prior art.
Another object of the present invention is to propose a removable union
assembly for power boilers which enables easy withdrawal/replacement of the
atomizer assembly of the oil boiler.
A still another object of the present invention is to propose a removable union
assembly for power boilers, which allows easy manufacturing.
A further object of the present invention is to propose a removable union
assembly for power boilers which enables an effortless clamping and de-
clamping of the atomizer assembly of the oil burner.
A still further object of the present invention is to propose a removable union
assembly for power boilers, which eliminates special material and precision
manufacturing steps in configurating the removable union assembly.
Yet another object of the present invention is to propose a removable union
assembly for power boilers which eradicates the menace due to leakage.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
Accordingly, there is provided an improved Removable union assembly for oil

burners, comprising a Seal ring, an "0" ring, a casing, one each fuel oil and
atomising steam/air ports, and a locating lug. The improvement is characterized
in that the removable union comprises a casing made of standard SCH40 SA106
Gr. B pipe, to accommodate the clamping arrangement, and in that the seal ring
hub is made of carbon steel plate to locate the atomizer assembly in such a way
that an optimum performance can be achieved. One end of the oil and Steam/air
ports have the provision to accommodate quick connecting couplings to the
respective oil and steam/air hoses. The Stationary union assembly of the oil
burners comprises a simple clamping means to hold the atomizer assembly in the
located place. The clamping means is forte enabled to prevent accidental
disconnection of the oil and steam/air hoses
Thus, the present invention propose a removable union for oil burners which is
configured to simplify and flexible the manufacturing process of the assembly.
The present invention thus provides a removable union assembly resulting in
simplicity in manufacturing, operation and maintenance. The inventive removable
union assembly eliminates the hardships due to errors creeping in due
mandatory manufacturing requirements. The improved removable union
assembly enables an easy operability and maintainability. The invention
eliminates the requirement of special tools and efforts to withdraw/insert the
atomizer assembly.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
Figure-1 : Prior art Removable union assembly for oil burners.

Figure-2 : Another prior art Removable union assembly for oil burners.
Figure-3 : Removable union assembly according to the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
As shown in figure 3, the inventive removable union assembly of an oil burner
comprises a casing (01), an oil port (02), an atomizing steam/air port (03), a seal
ring hub (04) and a "O" ring (05). The casing (01) is made out of SA106 Gr. B
SCH40 pipe. The seal ring hub (04) is welded to the casing (01). The Seal ring
hub (04) is provided with holes to allow welding of the oil pipe and steam/air
pipe on one side and the oil port (02) and steam/air port (03) on the other side.
The oil port (02) and Steam/air port (03) are made of SCH40 SA106 Gr. B tube
and standard ANSI forged elbows. One end of oil port (02) and steam/air port
(03) are welded to the seal ring hub (04) and the other ends are connected to oil
and steam/air pipings through a plurality of quick connecting couplings with
respective oil hose (09) and steam/air hose (08). A guide plate (10) is provided
on the casing (01) to locate the atomizer assembly in a preset orientation, and in
contact with a Limit Switch for gun engagement used for hooking up the
atomizer assembly engagement to burner management logics.
The Stationary union assembly (06) has a clamping means (07) to mount the
atomizer assembly in its place during operation. The clamping arrangement (07)
allows an effortless clamping, and further eliminates the possibility of accidental
disconnection of the quick connecting couplings. The stationary union assembly
(06) is provided with a hose holder (11) to hold the oil and atomizing steam/air
hoses (08,09) in their place.
