Specification

DESC:TECHNICAL FIELD
[001] The embodiments herein generally relate to roof rail assembly in vehicles and more particularly but not exclusively to single piece roof rail assembly for a passenger vehicle and a method for mounting the roof rail assembly.
BACKGROUND
[002] Generally, a roof rail is a bar like structure mounted on top of roof of a vehicle for carrying luggage. The roof rails facilitate the mounting of luggage on the roof of the vehicle. Conventionally roof rails are mounted in the vehicle by providing cut-outs or openings in body panel and roof structure of the vehicle which leads to leakage issues.
[003] Single-member rails comprise an elongated connecting member having at its end bolted to the vehicle roof. This type of construction requires complex fabrication steps to manufacture the rail so as to ensure that the required properties and geometries of a particular design and the necessary mechanical strength and stiffness are obtained.
[004] Multiple-member rails consist of substantially two mounting members and a central connecting member inserted between the mount members. Similarly with a multiple-member rail, the mount members are bolted to the vehicle roof and in addition there can be provided intermediate supports likewise bolted to the vehicle roof and suitably attached to the central connecting member.
[005] The conventional rail systems have the significant disadvantage that the vehicle roof has to be provided with appropriate apertures and/or holes to enable the mount members to be fixed to the vehicle roof. When holes are drilled in the vehicle roof, any inadequacy in sealing creates the risk of corrosion, which further leads in breakage of mount members. Also, conventional rails have to be fabricated in separate manufacturing steps which have the disadvantage of making the roof carrier system more expensive.
[006] Therefore, there exists a need for a roof rail assembly for a vehicle which is less expensive and easy to assemble. Furthermore, there exists a need for a roof rail assembly that can eliminate the aforementioned drawbacks.

OBJECTS
[007] The principal object of an embodiment of this invention is to provide a single piece roof rail assembly for a vehicle.
[008] Another object of an embodiment of this invention is to provide a roof rail assembly for a vehicle which is easy to assemble.
[009] Yet another object of an embodiment of this invention is to provide a roof rail assembly which includes less number of parts and manufacturing steps, thus decreasing total manufacturing cost of the roof rail assembly.
[0010] Another object of an embodiment of this invention is to provide a roof rail assembly having structural rigidity, and outer surface quality similar to rail assemblies having metal bracket attachments, while simultaneously providing a weight reduction.
[0011] Still another object of an embodiment of this invention is to provide a method for mounting a roof rail assembly in a vehicle.
[0012] These and other objects of the embodiments herein will be better appreciated and understood when considered in conjunction with the following description and the accompanying drawings. It should be understood, however, that the following descriptions, while indicating embodiments and numerous specific details thereof, are given by way of illustration and not of limitation. Many changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the embodiments herein without departing from the spirit thereof, and the embodiments herein include all such modifications.
