Abstract: ABSTRACT A SADDLE TYPE VEHICLE The present invention discloses a saddle type vehicle (100) that comprises a main frame which extends rearwardly from a head pipe (110). A pair of seat rails (138) extend rearwardly from the main frame to support a seat (118). The pair of seat rails (138) have a front end and a rear end (140). A first bracket (142) such as a seat rest bracket is disposed between the seat rails (138) at the rear end (140) thereof. A second bracket (144) is removably mounted on the first bracket (142). The second bracket (144) is configured to receive at least a rear fender assembly (130). Reference Figure 2
Claims:WE CLAIM:
1. A saddle type vehicle (100), comprising:
a main frame extending rearwardly from a head pipe (110);
a pair of seat rails (138) extending rearwardly from the main frame between a front end and a rear end (140);
a first bracket (142) disposed between the seat rails (138) at the rear end (140); and
a second bracket (144) removably mounted on the first bracket (142), the second bracket (144) configured to receive at least a rear fender assembly (130).
2. The saddle type vehicle (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the second bracket (144) comprises: a first horizontal member (146) extending in a vehicle width direction and configured to be removably mounted on the first bracket (142); one or more vertical members (150) extending downwardly from the first horizontal member (146); and at least one second horizontal member (148) extending from the one or more vertical members (150) in the vehicle rear direction.
3. The saddle type vehicle (100) as claimed in claim 2, wherein one or more mounting holes (M2) are provided on the vertical member (150), the first horizontal member (146) and the second horizontal member (148) of the second bracket (144).
4. The saddle type vehicle (100) as claimed in claimed in claim 2, wherein the first bracket (142) has one or more mounting holes (M1) corresponding to the mounting holes (M2) of the first horizontal member (146) of the second bracket (144).
5. The saddle type vehicle (100) as claimed in claim 2 or 3, wherein the vertical member (150) of the second bracket (144) is configured to removably receive the rear fender assembly (130).
6. The saddle type vehicle as claimed in claim 2 or 3, wherein the second horizontal member (148) of the second bracket (144) is configured to removably receive a tail cover assembly (188).
7. The saddle type vehicle as claimed in claim 2 or 3, wherein the vertical member (150) of the second bracket (144) is configured to removably receive a body front fender rear (198).
8. The saddle type vehicle as claimed in claim 1, claim 6 and claim 7, wherein the seat rails (138) are configured to receive at least a portion of the rear fender assembly (130), the body front fender rear (198) and the tail cover assembly (188).
9. The saddle type vehicle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the first bracket (142) is welded to the pair of seat rails (138).
, Description:FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[001] The present invention relates to a saddle type vehicle. More particularly, the present invention relates to a bracket for removably mounting at least a rear fender assembly.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[002] The rear portion of a saddle type vehicle include assemblies such as a rear fender assembly, body front fender rear and a tail cover assembly. In the existing art, the rear fender assembly, body front fender rear and the tail cover assembly are assembled onto a bracket commonly known as a seat rest bracket. The seat rest bracket is welded to rear end portions of seat rails. The rear fender assembly, body front fender rear and the tail cover assembly are directly assembled onto the seat rest bracket. One of the disadvantages associated with seat rest bracket is that it is prone to damages during different stages of vehicle assembly such as welding, coating and/or transportation. As the rear fender assembly, body front fender rear and the tail cover assembly are directly assembled onto the seat rest bracket, any damage to the seat bracket results in re-assembling of said assemblies which increases the service time and makes the process of assembling time consuming, complicated as well as cumbersome.
[003] Thus, there is a need in the art for a saddle type vehicle which addresses the aforementioned problems.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[004] In one aspect of the invention, a saddle type vehicle is disclosed that has a main frame which extends rearwardly from a head pipe. A pair of seat rails extend rearwardly from the main frame to support a seat. The pair of seat rails have a front end and a rear end. A first bracket such as a seat rest bracket is disposed between the seat rails at the rear end of the seat rails. A second bracket is removably mounted on the first bracket. The second bracket is configured to receive at least a rear fender assembly.
[005] In an embodiment, the first bracket is welded to the rear end of the seat rails.
[006] In an embodiment, the first bracket is removably mounted to the rear end of the seat rails.
[007] In an embodiment, the first bracket has one or more mounting holes to receive the second bracket.
[008] In an embodiment, the second bracket has at least a first horizontal member, a second horizontal member and a vertical member. The vertical member extends between the first horizontal member and the second horizontal member. The first horizontal member of the second bracket is mounted on the first bracket and extends in the vehicle width direction. The vertical member extends downwardly from the first horizontal member of the second bracket. In other words, the vertical member of the second bracket extends from the first horizontal member in a vehicle downward direction. The second horizontal member of the second bracket extends from the vertical member of the second bracket in a vehicle rear direction.
[009] In an embodiment, one or more mounting holes are provided on the first horizontal member. The one or mounting holes on the first horizontal member correspond to one or more mounting holes on the first bracket. During assembly of the second bracket onto the first bracket, the one or more mounting holes on the first horizontal member are aligned with the one or more mounting holes on the first bracket and secured by means of one or more fasteners such as bolts, nuts, screws, washers, studs and the likes known to person skilled in the art.
[010] In an embodiment, one or more mounting holes are provided on the vertical member of the second bracket. The one or more mounting holes on the vertical member correspond to one or more mounting holes provided on a rear fender assembly. During assembly of the rear fender assembly onto the vertical member of the second bracket, the one or mounting holes on the rear fender assembly are aligned with one or more mounting holes on the vertical member and secured by means of one or more fasteners such as bolts, nuts, screws, washers, studs, rivets, anchors, inserts, threaded rods and the likes known to person skilled in the art.
[011] In an embodiment, the one more mounting holes on the vertical member also correspond to one or more mounting holes provided on a body front fender rear. During assembly of the body front fender rear onto the vertical member of the second bracket, the one or mounting holes on the body front fender rear are aligned with one or more mounting holes on the vertical member and secured by means of one or more fasteners such as bolts, nuts, screws, washers, studs, rivets, anchors, inserts, threaded rods and the likes known to person skilled in the art.
[012] In an embodiment, one or more mounting holes are provided on the second horizontal member of the second bracket. The one or more mounting holes on the second horizontal member correspond to the one or more mounting holes provided on a tail cover assembly. During assembly of the tail cover assembly on the second horizontal member of the second bracket, the one or mounting holes on the tail cover assembly are aligned with the one or more mounting holes on the second horizontal bracket and secured by means of one or more fasteners such as bolts, nuts, screws, washers, studs and the likes known to person skilled in the art.
[013] In an embodiment, the seat rails of the vehicle are also configured to removably receive at least a portion of the rear fender assembly.
[014] In an embodiment, the seat rails of the vehicle are also configured to removably receive at least a portion of the tail cover assembly.
[015] In an embodiment, the seat rails of the vehicle are also configured to removably receive at least a portion of the body front fender rear.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[017] The present invention relates to a saddle type vehicle. More particularly, the present invention relates to a bracket for removably mounting at least a rear fender assembly.
[018] Figure 1 illustrates a right side view of a saddle type vehicle 100, in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. Arrows provided in the top left corner depicts direction with respect to the motorcycle, wherein an arrow F denotes front direction, an arrow R indicates rear direction, an arrow Up denotes upward direction, an arrow Dw denotes downward direction.
[019] The vehicle 100 comprises a prime mover 114 that is adapted to provide motive force for movement of the vehicle 100. In an embodiment, the prime mover 114 is an internal combustion engine, which is preferably a single-cylinder engine. The vehicle 100 comprises a front wheel 108, a rear wheel 116, a frame member 112, a seat 118 and a fuel tank 104. The frame member 112 includes a head pipe 110, a main frame (not shown) extending rearwardly from the head pipe 110 and a pair of seat rails (not shown) extending rearwardly from the main frame (not shown) between a front end and a rear end to support the seat 118. The main frame includes a main tube (not shown) and a down tube (not shown). The head pipe 110 supports a steering shaft (not shown) and a suspension assembly 102 attached to the steering shaft through a lower bracket (not shown). The suspension assembly 102 supports the front wheel 108.
[020] Further, the upper portion of the front wheel 108 is covered by a front fender 120 mounted to the lower portion of the telescopic front suspension at the end of the steering shaft. A handlebar 122 is fixed to upper bracket (not shown) and can rotate about the steering shaft for turning the vehicle. A headlight 124, a visor guard (not shown) and instrument cluster 106 is arranged on an upper portion of the head pipe 110.
[021] The fuel tank 104 is mounted on the main tube. A rear swing arm (not shown) is connected to the frame member to swing vertically, and the rear wheel 116 is connected to rear end of the rear swing arm. Generally, the rear swing arm is supported by a mono rear suspension 126 or through two suspensions on either side of the vehicle 100. A taillight unit 128 is disposed at the end of the vehicle 100 and at the rear of the seat assembly. The rear wheel 116 arranged below the seat 118 rotates by the motive force of the prime mover 114 transmitted through a chain drive (not shown).
[022] Further, a rear fender assembly 130 disposed above the rear wheel 116, a tail cover assembly (not shown) and a body front fender rear (not shown) are also provided in a rear portion of the vehicle as discussed in the foregoing paragraphs. An exhaust pipe 132 of the vehicle 100 extends vertically downward from the prime mover 114 and then extends below the prime mover 114, longitudinally along length of the vehicle 100 before terminating in a muffler 134. The muffler 134 is typically disposed adjoining the rear wheel 116.
[023] Figure 2 is a perspective view of the rear portion of the vehicle, depicting mounting of a second bracket on a first bracket in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.
[024] As shown in Figure 2, the rear portion 136 of the vehicle 100 comprises a pair of seat rails 138 extending rearwardly from the main frame (not shown) between a front end (not shown) and a rear end 140. A first bracket 142 is disposed between the seat rails 138 at the rear end of the seat rails 138. The first bracket 142 has one or mounting holes M1 which are through holes. Figure 2 also illustrates a second bracket 144 which is removably mounted on the first bracket 142. As illustrated, the second bracket 144 also has one or more mounting holes M2 which correspond with the one or more mounting holes M1 of the first bracket. The mounting holes of the second bracket are also through holes. During assembly of the second bracket 144 on the first bracket 142, the one or more mounting holes M2 on the second bracket 144 are aligned with the one or more mounting holes M1 on the first bracket 142 and are fastened with one or more fasteners such as bolts, nuts, screws, washers, studs, and the likes known to person skilled in the art. The construction of the second bracket has also been illustrated in Figure 3 and discussed in detail in the foregoing paragraphs.
[025] In an embodiment, the first bracket 142 is permanently fastened to the rear end 140 of the seat rails 138 by means such as welding, riveting, brazing and the likes known to a person skilled in the art.
[026] In an embodiment, the first bracket 142 is removably mounted on the rear end 140 of the seat rails 138 with one or more fasteners F. One or more first mounting brackets are disposed on the seat rails 138. The first mounting brackets have one or more mounting holes which correspond with the one or more mounting holes M1 provided on the first bracket 142. During assembly of the first bracket 142 on the rear end 140 of the seat rails 138, the one or more mounting holes on the first mounting brackets are aligned with the one or more mounting holes M1 on the first bracket 142 and fastened with one or more fasteners F such as bolts, nuts, screws, washers, studs, and the likes known to person skilled in the art.
In an embodiment, the first bracket 142 has a substantially square or rectangular shape. In an embodiment, the first bracket 142 has a substantially U shape. In an embodiment, the second bracket 144 comprises a bush and weld nut.
[027] Figure 3 is a perspective view of the second bracket, in accordance with the embodiments of the present invention. As illustrated in Figure 3, the second bracket 144 is removably mounted on the first bracket 142. As illustrated, the second bracket 144 comprises a first horizontal member 146, a second horizontal member 148 and one or more vertical members 150 extending between the first horizontal member 146 and the second horizontal member 148.
[028] The first horizontal member 146 is a plate like structure extending in a vehicle width direction. The first horizontal member has an upper surface 152 and a lower surface (not shown) opposite the upper surface 152. The lower surface of the first horizontal member 146 is mounted on the first bracket 142. The first horizontal member 146 has one or more mounting holes M2. The one or more mounting holes M2 on the first horizontal member 146 are through holes which extends from the upper surface 152 of the first horizontal member 146 to the lower surface (not shown) of the first horizontal member 146. The one or mounting holes M2 on the first horizontal member 146 correspond with the one or more mounting holes M1 on the first bracket 142. During assembly of the second bracket 144 on the first bracket 142, the one or more mounting holes M2 on the first horizontal member 146 are aligned with the one or mounting holes M1 on the first bracket 142 and are fastened with one or more fasteners F such as bolts, nuts, screws, washers, studs, and the likes known to person skilled in the art.
[029] The one or more vertical members 150 extends from the first horizontal member 146 in a vehicle downward direction. Each of the vertical members 150 has a front surface (not shown) and a back surface 154 which is positioned opposite the front surface. The back surface 154 of the vertical member 150 faces the rear fender assembly (not shown in Figure 2). At least one of the vertical members 150 extending from the first horizontal member has one or more mounting holes M2. The one or more mounting holes M2 are through holes extending from the front surface of the vertical member 150 to the back surface 154 of the vertical member 150. The one more mounting holes M2 on the vertical member 150 corresponds with one or more mounting holes provided on the rear fender assembly.
[030] In an embodiment, a first vertical member 150A, a second vertical member 150B and a third vertical member 150C extend from the first horizontal member 146 in a vehicle downward direction. The second vertical member 150B is positioned between the first vertical member 150A and the second vertical member 150C. Each of the first and third vertical member 150A,150C has a mounting hole M2 which corresponds with the mounting holes provided in the rear fender assembly.
[031] In an embodiment, one or more vertical members 150 are formed integrally with the first horizontal member 146.
[032] The second horizontal member 148 extends from the back surface 154 of the one or more vertical members 150 in a vehicle rear direction. The second horizontal member 148 has an upper surface 156 and a lower surface (not shown). The upper surface 156 of the second horizontal member 148 faces a tail cover assembly. The second horizontal member 148 has one or more mounting holes M2. The one or more mounting holes M2 of the second horizontal member are through holes extending from the upper surface 156 of the second horizontal member 148 to the lower surface of the second horizontal member 148. The one or more mounting holes M2 on the second horizontal member 148 correspond with the one or more mounting holes provided on the tail cover assembly.
[033] In an embodiment, the first vertical member 150A, the second vertical member 150B and the third vertical member 150C extend from the first horizontal member 146 in a vehicle downward direction. The second vertical member 150B is positioned between the first vertical member 150A and the third vertical member 150C. The second horizontal member 148 extends from the second vertical member 150B in a vehicle rear direction. The second vertical member 150B has one or more mounting holes M2 which correspond with the one or more mounting holes provided on the tail cover assembly.
[034] In an embodiment, the second horizontal member 148 is formed integrally with the one or more vertical members 150.
[035] Figure 4a and Figure 4b are exploded and perspective view of the rear fender assembly in accordance with the embodiments of the present invention.
[036] The rear fender assembly 130 includes a rear fender 158, a left turn signal lamp 160, a right turn signal lamp 162, a seat lockset assembly 164, a rear number plate 166, a left side reflector 168, a right-side reflector 170, a number plate illuminator 172, a rear fender bracket 174 and a reflex reflector 176.
[037] In an embodiment, the rear fender is divided into a rear fender upper half 178 and a rear fender lower half 180. The rear fender upper half 178 is the portion of the rear fender which, in the vehicle upward direction, is positioned above the turn signal lamps 160, 162.
[038] The rear fender upper half 178 comprises a main member 182 having an upper side and a lower side extending in vehicle width direction and a left side and a right side extending in a vehicle height direction. The rear fender upper half 178 further comprises two side members 184 extending from the left and right sides of the main member 182 in the vehicle front direction. The main member 182 has one or more mounting holes M3 which correspond with the one or more mounting holes M2 on the one or more vertical members 150 of the second bracket 144. Each of the side members 184 has one or more mounting holes M3 which correspond with one or more holes M4 provided on the second mounting brackets 188 disposed on the seat rails 138 and/or supporting frames attached to the seat rails 138
[039] Figure 5a illustrates the assembly of the rear fender assembly onto the second bracket and the seat rails, in accordance with the embodiments of the present invention.
[040] During assembly of the rear fender assembly 130 on the second bracket 144, the one or more mounting holes M3 on the main member 182 of the rear fender assembly 130 are aligned with the one or more mounting holes M2 on the one or more vertical members 150 of the second bracket 144 and are removably fastened with one or more fasteners F such as bolts, nuts, screws, washers, studs, and the likes known to person skilled in the art. Also, the one or more mounting holes M3 on the side members 184 of the rear fender assembly 130 are aligned with the one or more mounting holes M4 on the second mounting brackets 186 disposed on the seat rails 138 and/or supporting frames 186 attached to the seat rails 138 and are removably fastened with one or more fasteners F such as bolts, nuts, screws, washers, studs, and the likes known to person skilled in the art. Figure 5b illustrates the second bracket 144 and the rear fender assembly 130 in an assembled state.
[041] Figure 6 is a perspective view of rear portion of the vehicle , depicting the mounting of a tail cover assembly onto the second bracket in accordance with the embodiment of the present invention.
[042] The tail cover assembly 188 is an external cover/panel. The main functionality of the tail cover assembly 188 is to cover the pair of seat rails and provide support to the seat. The tail cover assembly is generally disposed between the seat and the pair of seat rails. The tail cover assembly protects the seat rails and other vehicular components stored underneath seat from dust, splashing of water, theft and other external impacts.
[043] The tail cover assembly 188 comprises a main member 190 and side members 192 extending from the main member 190 in a vehicle front direction. The tail cover assembly 188 has an upper surface 194 and a lower surface (not shown) opposite the upper surface. The upper surface 194 of the tail cover assembly faces the seat 118. The lower surface of the tail cover assembly faces the seat rails 138. The main member 190 of the tail cover assembly 188 has one or more mounting holes M5 which correspond with the one or more mounting holes M2 on the second horizontal member 148 of the second bracket 144. During assembly of the tail cover assembly 188 on the second bracket 144, the one or more mounting holes M5 of the tail cover assembly are aligned with one or more mounting holes M2 on the second horizontal member 148 of the second bracket 144 and are removably fastened with one or more fasteners F such as bolts, nuts, screws, washers, stud, and the likes known to person skilled in the art.
[044] Also, the seat rails 138 have third support brackets 196 having mounting holes M6 which correspond with the mounting holes M5 provided on the side members 192 of the tail cover assembly 188. During assembly of the tail cover assembly 188 on the second bracket 144, the mounting holes M5 on the side members 192 of the tail cover assembly 188 are aligned with the one or more mounting holes M6 on the third support brackets 196 disposed on the seat rails 1238 and are removably fastened with one or more fasteners F such as bolts, nuts, screws, washers, stud, and the likes known to person skilled in the art.
[045] Figure 7 is a perspective view of a body front fender rear in accordance with the embodiment of the present invention.
[046] The body front fender rear 198 is generally disposed below the pair of seat rails 138 and covers a space available underneath the seat 118 of the vehicle 100. This space is generally used for arranging electrical components under the seat 118. As the body front render rear 198 covers the space underneath the seat 118, unauthorized access of the electrical components is curtailed. Further, the splashing of rainwater, mud and other foreign objects onto the under-seat area and onto the electrical components is also prevented by covering the under-seat area by the body front fender rear.
[047] The body front fender rear 198 extends in the front-rear direction of the vehicle and includes a front portion 200 and a rear portion 202. The body front fender rear further comprises an upper surface 204 and a lower surface (not shown). The upper surface 204 of the body front fender rear 198 faces the pair of seat rails 138. The rear portion 202 of the body front fender 198 has one or more mounting holes M7 which correspond to one or more mounting holes M2 of the vertical member 150 of the second bracket 144. During assembly, the one or more mounting holes M7 of the rear portion 202 of the body front fender rear 198 are aligned with one or more mounting holes M2 on the one or more vertical members 150 of the second bracket 144 and are removably fastened with one or more fasteners F such as bolts, nuts, screws, washers, stud, and the likes known to person skilled in the art.
[048] Also, the seat rails 138 have one or more fourth support brackets 206 (shown in Figure 8) having mounting holes which correspond with the mounting holes M7 provided on the front portion 200 of the body front fender rear 198. During assembly, the mounting holes M7 provided on the front portion 200 of the body front fender rear 198 are aligned with the one or more mounting holes on the fourth support brackets 206 disposed on the seat rails 138 and are removably fastened with one or more fasteners F such as bolts, nuts, screws, washers, stud, and the likes known to person skilled in the art.
[049] Figure 8 is a perspective view of rear portion of the vehicle, depicting the mounting of the body front fender rear onto the second bracket in accordance with the embodiment of the present invention.
[050] As illustrated, the one or more mounting holes M7 of the rear portion 202 of the body front fender rear 198 are aligned with one or more mounting holes M2 on the one or more vertical members 150 of the second bracket 144 and are removably fastened with one or more fasteners F such as bolts, nuts, screws, washers, stud, and the likes known to person skilled in the art. Also, the mounting holes M7 provided on the front portion 200 of the body front fender rear 198 are aligned with the one or more mounting holes on the fourth support brackets 206 disposed on the seat rails 138 and are removably fastened with one or more fasteners F such as bolts, nuts, screws, washers, stud, and the likes known to person skilled in the art.
[051] In an embodiment, during the assembly, the first step is to mount the first horizontal member 146 of the second bracket 144 on the first bracket 142. Thereafter, the body front fender rear 198 is mounted on the vertical member 150 of the second bracket 144 followed by the rear fender assembly 130 which is also mounted on the vertical member 150 of the second bracket 144. Thereafter, the tail cover assembly 188 is mounted on the second horizontal member 148 of the second bracket 144.
[052] It is to be understood that the second bracket 144 can have further mounting holes/mounting provisions for removably mounting assemblies in the rear portion of the vehicle 136 other than the body front fender rear, the rear fender assembly 130 and the tail cover assembly 188.
[053] Advantageously, the present invention reduces the time and complexity involved in the process of assembly in the rear portion of the vehicle. In case the first bracket 142 is damaged during the assembly process, the second bracket 144, which is removably mounted on the first bracket 142, can be disassembled easily from the damaged first bracket 142 and re-assembled on a new/repaired first bracket 142. Moreover, the assemblies such as rear fender assembly 130, body front fender rear 198 and tail cover assembly 188 are removably mounted on the second bracket 144 which leads to easy assembly, better handling, serviceability and manufacturability of said assemblies. Also, the second bracket 144 improves the aesthetics of the rear portion of the vehicle 100.
[054] While the present invention has been described with respect to certain embodiments, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modification may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims.
