PREAMBLE TO THE DESCRIPTION
The following specification particularly describes the invention and the manner in which it is to be performed.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[001] The present invention generally relates to a saddle type vehicle.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[002] Conventionally, a rear assembly of a saddle type vehicle includes a pillion grab rail and a plurality of lamps. The pillion grab rail is disposed at the top-rear most end of the saddle type vehicle and provides a sturdy anchoring point to a pillion rider. Additionally, the pillion grab rail can be used as an anchoring point to fasten a baggage or an article such as a helmet. To provide strong grip and anchoring characteristics, it is necessary that construction of the pillion grab rail is sturdy and rugged. Commonly, the pillion grab rail is created through aluminium die casting process. A significant drawback of manufacturing the pillion grab rail by aluminium die casting process is the heavy weight that directly impacts on fuel consumption and fuel economy of the saddle type vehicle. Further, a thick singular die casted piece of aluminium is prone to have air entrapments which results in structural weakness and is likely to break upon impact.
[003] Most manufacturers have attempted to reduce weight by scooping bottom section of the pillion grab rail, replacing the scooped-out portion with a plastic cover and attaching the plastic cover to a metal portion of the pillion grab rail by means of a plurality of fasteners. The fasteners can cause irritability and discomfort when the pillion rider hold the pillion grab rail.
[004] The plurality of lamps is another significant aspect of the rear assembly of the saddle type vehicle. The plurality of lamps includes brake lamps, indicator lamps and a position lamp. In particular, the position lamp is conventionally positioned below the brake lamps and between the indicator lamps. A driver seated in a heavy vehicle such as a truck or a bus having limited field of view would not be able to spot the position lamp of the saddle type vehicle from behind when in proximity. The position lamp is disposed so close to the ground that it would not be visible to the bus or truck driver seated quite high above the ground.
[005] Thus, there is a need in the art for a saddle type vehicle which can address at least the aforementioned problems and limitations.

[016] In another embodiment, the pair of connecting ends are configured to securely mount the pillion grab rail onto a body frame of the saddle type vehicle.
[017] In another embodiment, the body frame includes a pair of seat rails. The seat rails are configured to receive the pair of connecting ends of the pillion grab rail.
[018] In another embodiment, the saddle type vehicle includes a rear side panel configured to be mounted onto the seat rails.
[019] In another embodiment, the rear side panel and the pillion grab rail flush in a vehicle side view.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[022] Various features and embodiments of the present invention here will be discernible from the following further description thereof, set out hereunder.
[023] The present invention generally relates to a saddle type vehicle.
[024] Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of a saddle type vehicle 100, in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. The saddle type vehicle 100 may be any two-wheeled vehicle such as a motorcycle, a scooter or a moped. A pillion grab rail 200 is mounted on the saddle type vehicle 100 and is disposed at the rear-topmost region of the saddle type vehicle 100. The pillion grab rail 200 extends from one side of the saddle type vehicle 100 to the other side in a vehicle width direction. Therefore, the pillion grab rail 200 has a pair of contact points namely, a first end (not shown) and a second end (not shown) to be mounted onto the saddle type vehicle 200.
[025] Figures 2 to 5 illustrate the pillion grab rail 200, in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. The pillion grab rail 200 has a top member 210 (also shown in Figure 9) and a bottom member 230 (also shown in Figure 10). The top member 210 is made of aluminium or like light metal alloys and the bottom member 230 is made of plastic. The top member 210 and the bottom member 230 are configured to be detachably attached to each other by a plurality of fasteners 240. In an embodiment, the plurality of fasteners 240 are a plurality of screws that are mounted to a plurality of corresponding mounting slots (not shown) on a bottom surface of the bottom member 230. The pillion grab rail 200 has a recess 250 defined in vehicle width direction. The recess 250 is configured in terms of shape, size and geometric dimension to receive a lamp 220. In an exemplary embodiment, the recess 250 is defined in the top member 210 of the pillion grab rail 200. In an embodiment, the lamp 220 can be a position lamp to indicate position of the vehicle 100 to a rider of another vehicle.
[026] Figure 6 illustrates a side perspective view of the saddle type vehicle 100, in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. As illustrated in Figures 2 to 5, the pillion grab rail 200 has a pair of connecting ends 260L, 260R that extend from the first end and the second end of the top member 210 of the pillion grab rail 200. The pair of connecting ends 260L, 260R are configured to securely mount the pillion grab rail 200 onto a body frame (not shown) of the saddle type vehicle 100. In an embodiment, the body frame has a pair of seat rails (not shown) and the pair of seat rails have a mounting bracket 265 to receive the pair of connecting ends 260L, 260R of the pillion grab rail 200. The saddle type vehicle 200 further has a pair of rear side panels 310 mounted onto the seat rails. The pillion grab rail 200 and the rear side panel 310 are flushed in a vehicle side view. Being flushed, the pillion grab rail 200 and the rear side panel 310 have a continuity feel and provide aesthetic appeal.
[027] Figure 7A illustrates a top view of the pillion grab rail 200. Figure 7B illustrates a cross-sectional view of the pillion grab rail 200. The cross-section is made across section B-B. A channel 270 is provided in between the top member 210 and the bottom member 230 of the saddle type vehicle 200. An inner surface of the top member 210 and an inner surface of the bottom member 230 can either or both be configured to create the channel 270 therebetween. The channel 270 is configured to route a plurality of wires 290. In an exemplary embodiment, the plurality of wires 290 connects the lamp 220 disposed in the recess 250 of the pillion grab rail 200.
[028] In an embodiment, the bottom member 230 has a plurality of protruding elements 280 surrounding each of the plurality of fasteners 240. The plurality of protruding elements 280 protrudes, in a vehicle top-down direction, from the bottom member 230 in substantially curvilinear profile. Each of the plurality of protruding elements 280 covering the fasteners 240, owning to their curvilinear profile, create a convex dome-like structure 300 over the fasteners 240. The convex dome-like structure 300 creates a barrier between sharp edges of the fasteners 240 and a pillion rider holding the pillion grab rail 200. At the same time, a screwdriver or a similar tool can be easily inserted into the convex dome-like structure 300 to fasten or unfasten the fasteners 240.
[029] Advantageously, the present invention discloses a pillion grab rail having a recess in vehicle width direction configured to receive a lamp. Further, the pillion grab rail comprises a top member and a bottom member attached by a plurality of fasteners surrounded by a plurality of protruding elements, and has a channel defined therebetween. The bottom member is made of plastic and in addition, the recess and the channel make the pillion grab handle light and improves fuel consumption and fuel economy. The top member is thinner and sleek and has a better structural integrity due to low or no air entrapments.
[030] Further, the plurality of protruding elements creates a convex dome-like structure that forms a barrier between sharp edges of the fasteners and a pillion rider holding the pillion grab rail. The lamp disposed in the recess of the pillion grab handle is significantly above the ground and thus can be viewed by drivers in heavy vehicles having a limited field of vision.
[031] While the present invention has been described with respect to certain embodiments, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modification may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims.
