Specification

This invention relates to a scooter type motor vehicle provided with a device for suspending articles below the control panel assembly of the vehicle, that is, the panel opposite the driver's seat.
It is common knowledge that in a scooter type motor vehicle, herein also referred to as a scooter, for the sake of brevity, various articles are required to be carried, from time to time, during movement of the vehicle from place to place. Among several articles, particular mention may be made of articles such as briefcases, salesmen's bags for carrying product samples and trade literature and so on.
Presently, such articles are carried on a scooter by placing them on the floor board, precariously wedged between the feet of the driver.
The hazardous nature of this exercise cannot be over emphasized, because such a situation can lead to lack of concentration on the part of the driver, whose attention will be generally riveted on the problem of maintaining the briefcase or other article in position

without toppling over on to the road.
Scooters, of course, have storage space, normally, under the seat, but then it is rarely that the driver of the vehicle makes use of such space; he would rather have the briefcase or salesmen's bag before him, while driving, for reasons of quick accessibility.
It is, therefore, one of the objects of this invention to avoid such hazardous travel by providing a device from which a brief case or any other lightweight article can be suspended in front of the driver while the vehicle is in motion. Apart from providing a stable support for the article and eliminating hazardous travel, the said device gives the driver the satisfaction of actually viewing the article, safe and secure before him.
The device proposed herein is capable of being put into use whenever required and just as capable of being put away, out of sight, when it is not required. Thus the device does not mar the appearance of the vehicle whenever it is not required for suspending articles

therefrom.
The said device is simple in its construction, yet effective in its performance. It does not increase the cost of the vehicle in any significant measure. It is easily manufactured from a material selected from the plastics category, although it is not restricted in manufacture to such category, so much so that it is durable in use and is also corrosion free.
Various other objects and advantages of the said device will be apparent from the following further description thereof given hereunder.
The scooter type motor vehicle provided with a device for suspending articles below the control panel assembly of the vehicle, according to this invention, comprises at least two parallel rods slidably and reciprocably supported in corresponding bushes securely attached, behind the panel, to the pivot tube of the vehicle, the first set of ends of the rods protruding from the bushes, behind the panel, and being provided with stoppers preventing the said first set from passing through the bushes, while the second set of

ends of the rods, passing through holes in the said panel, are securely attached to a handle, in front of the panel; such that whenever the handle is pulled away from the panel, in a direction towards the driver's seat, the rods extend in front of the panel, enabling articles to be securely suspended from the extended rods; and such that whenever the handle is pushed back against the panel, in a direction away from the driver's seat, the rods recede behind the panel, into the bushes.
This invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate, by way of example, and not by way of limitation, one of various possible embodiments of the said device. In the drawings
Figs.l and 2 illustrate the rods and handle assembly Fig.3 illustrates" the above assembly with bushes rigidly attached to the pivot tube of the scooter Fig. 4 illustrates a sectional view of an end of a rod integrally fixed to the handle, the said end being bent inside the handle to achieve a secure attachment

Fig.5 illustrates the rods in their extended position in front of the panel, the handle in the fully pulled-out state
Fig.6 illustrates the rods in their retracted position behind the panel, the handle in the fully pushed-in state
and Fig, 7 illustrates a briefcase suspended from the rods in their extended position.
Two parallel rods R pass through corresponding holes H in the control panel assembly D of the vehicle.
The rods R are slidably and reciprocably supported in corresponding bushes B rigidly attached, behind the panel D, to the pivot tube P of the vehicle, so that the bushes are not visible to the eye of the viewer from the exterior of the vehicle.
A first set of the ends El of the rods R protrude from the bushes B behind the panel D. These ends El are provided with stoppers for preventing such ends from passing through the said bushes. One of the forms such

stoppers can take is a lock-nut L threadedly engaged with the end El of each rod.
The second set of the ends E2 of the rods pass through holes H in the said panel D and are securely attached to a handle J, in front of the panel D.
It will thus be observed that whenever the handle is pulled away from the panel, that is, in a direction towards the driver's seat S, the rods R are made to protrude or extend in front of the panel D, to enable an article, such as, a briefcase K to be securely suspended from the rods. The purpose in having the rods disposed in parallel is to permit the grip G of the briefcase K to be stably supported on the extended rods.
It will also further be observed that whenever the handle J is pushed against the panel D (with no article suspended therefrom), that is, in a direction away from the driver's seat S, the rods recede behind the panel D, into the bushes B.
In the embodiment illustrated it will be seen that the

handle J has a configuration enabling the same to rest flat against the panel D in the fully pushed-in position of the said handle. This is to ensure that the handle, in such position, does not protrude from the panel D and be a hindrance to the driver.
It will further be observed that the rod R is integrally attached to the handle J by embedding the corresponding end E2 of the rod in the handle, the said end being bent inside the handle to ensure integral attachment.
In its fully pushed-in position, the handle J rests against a dimple or cavity F on the panel D. This provision enables the driver to insert a finger into the dimple or cavity F and pull out the handle for extending the rods in front of the panel D, whenever the said rods are required to be used.
Preferably, the • rods R are disposed in the bushes B such that, in their extended position, the rods are in a slightly raised position (inclined upwardly to the horizontal) to avoid any tendency for the briefcase or other article to slide down the rods to the handle. So

also, a portion T of the handle J is raised over the rods R to act as a stopper for the briefcase or other article suspended from the rods, and prevent any possibility of such article sliding over the handle.
The terms and expressions in this specification are of description and not of limitation, there being no intention in the use of such terms and expressions of excluding any equivalents of the features illustrated and described, but it is understood that various other embodiments of the invention herein are possible without departing from the scope and ambit thereof.
