Abstract: This invention relates to a side sill of vehicle comprising of a side sill outer and a side sill inner facing each other, wherein the side sill outer having a longitudinal hollow member with one open side provided with a number of holes with mounting structure which are symmetrical on both sides of the side sill outer about its center of gravity. It is associated with the following advantageous features:- -Common tool for LH and RH side sill. -Cost effective by reducing the investment by 50%. -Common welding jig for sub-camp. of strength side sill. -Lesser space for storing common die for side sill (RHS and LHS). -Maintenance of only one die. -Requires single Bin for material storage.
FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to a side sill of vehicle. It is particularly related to a side
sill outer.
PRIOR ART
A side sill of vehicle comprising of a side sill outer and a side sill inner facing
each other located adjacent to main floor.
Currently the vehicle is provided with a symmetric side sill on both left hand
and right hand side. This is designed relying on the following requirements:-
- ED holes for ED coating for anti-corrosion and draining fluids during the
painting process
Holes for mounting of different parts
Layout requirements
Functional Requirements
Strength requirements
Reference may be made to fig. 1, wherein the front side of the sill (1) is welded
with front hinge pillar (2) and at the rear end, it is welded with another member
such as locker compjwheel house (3). At the center, the side sill is connected
to B-pillar (4). Further, the side sill is required to be ensured for the provision
of ED holes (5), jig holes (6) and also other mounting holes (if required) for
mounting different parts therethrough.
Reference may be made to fig. 2 indicating the following:-
Panel (1), side sill inner (2), side sill outer (3), B-pillar (4) and main floor (5).
Now, reference may be made to fig. 3, in which a side sill on the left side of the
vehicle is provided with a plurality of holes (A) in the front side (in proximity to
the front wheels of vehicle). For right hand side sill these holes of same
diameter appear in the rear end of the right hand side sill i.e. in proximity to
the rear wheels if manufactured by the same tool, which is used for
manufacturing left hand side sill.

However, in order to have same· mountings on both the side sills (RHS and
LHS) at the same location with respect to the front/rear end of vehicle i.e. to
obtain symmetrical side sill same tool can't be used.
This is because the mounting holes and their locations are not symmetrical
about the centre of gravity (Lateral & Longitudinal Plane) of the side sill.
The above provision gives rise to the following disadvantages:-
- Two tools for each side sill and maintenance thereof.
Different welding jig for sub-comp of side sill.
Requires more space for storing separate die for each sill.
Maintenance of separate bins for right hand and left hand part m
welding line.
Expensive because investment is required to develop separate tool and
welding jig for each sill.
Hence, the present invention has been proposed to overcome the above
disadvantages by making the side sill symmetrical in all respects about its
centre of gravity (i.e. Lateral & Longitudinal Plane).
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
Primary object of the present invention is to provide a side sill of vehicle which
overcomes disadvantages associated with the prior art.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a side sill of vehicle which
is simple in construction. Further object of the present invention is to provide a
side sill of vehicle which is reliable and efficient.
Further object of the present invention is to provide a side sill of vehicle which
can withstand Offset Frontal Impact, Side Impact & Rear Impact

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to this invention there is provided a side sill of vehicle comprising of
a side sill outer and a side sill inner facing each other, wherein the side sill
outer having a longitudinal hollow member with one open side provided with a
number of holes with mounting structure which are symmetrical on both sides
of the side sill outer about its center of gravity.

DETAIL DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION WITH REFERENCE TO THE
ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS:
The invention is directed to a side sill of vehicle. The side sill comprising a side
sill outer and side sill inner facing each other, which is placed in proximity to
the main floor of vehicle. The invention focuses on side sill outer.
The side sill outer comprising a longitudinal hollow member having one side
open for example channel-section with variation on its surface according to the
requirements. When the same parts are mounted on each side sill (Left and
Right hand side) and at same location with respect to front/ rear of side sill. The
same tool can't be used for fabrication of both side sills for the reasons already
mentioned.
In order to have a common tool for both side sills, the invention is based on the
principle of symmetry of mountings in all respects about e.G of sill i.e. about
the transverse plane through centre of gravity of the side sill and about the
longitudinal plane through the e.G.
Thus, the left hand side of the sill is same as the right hand side of the sill
about e.G (Lateral & Longitudinal Plane) of sill.
Now, reference may be made to figure 4 wherein the side sill is connected with
front hinge pillar (1) in front side of front door, 8-pillar (2) in the centre and a
part such as locker compartment/wheel house (3) at the rear end. The profile
of the front end of side sill matches with that of the hinge pillar and rear end of
the sill matches with the profile of rear part connected thereto for offset crash
requirements and to resist the deformation during the rear impact & side
impact respectively.
Referring to fig. 5, in which a plurality of ED holes (E) of same number and size
are provided on each side of the transverse plane (T) through e.G of the sill.
Said ED holes are used for ED coating for anti- corrosion and draining fluids
during the painting process

therethrough. Again, a jig hole (J) is located in proximity to the rear end for
connecting with a part such as locker compartment,/ wheel house.
Similarly, another jig hole (J) of same size and number is provided in proximity
to the front end for mounting with front hinge pillar. The holes are same in all
respects with respect to e.G of sill.
The B-pillar is mounted on the sill between the ED holes. Mounting points of
the B-pillar are also symmetrical with respect to e.G of sill.
In addition to the above, any further mounting structure can be symmetrically
provided on both sides of the sill.
Thus, all the mounting holes and locations thereof in conjunction with the
mounting structure are symmetrical about e.G ((i.e. Lateral & Longitudinal
Plane) of the side sill to serve the purpose, for which the invention has been
proposed.
Now, reference may be made to fig. 6 and 7 indicating connectivity of different
parts of vehicle with the side sill outer (7).
The different parts include Reinf. Rear door hinge (1), panel side body outer (2),
strength side sill (3), panel side sill inner (4), Panel main floor (5) and reinf.
Side sill inner (6), wherein the side sill inner reinforcement (R) is provided with
the side sill outer (7) maintaining gap therebetween as shown.
Now, reference may be made to fig. 8 and 9.
The side sill outer is preferably made of sheet metal by the method of for
example stamping (press process) without restricting scope of the invention to
the same.
A common tool can be used to manufacture each side sill thereby savmg
investment for second tool unlike prior art.

It is to be noted that the present invention is susceptible to modifications,
adaptations and changes by those skilled in the art. Such variant embodiments
employing the concepts and features of this invention are intended to be within
the scope of the present invention, which is further set forth under the
following claims:-
WE CLAIM:-
1. A side sill of vehicle comprising of a side sill outer and a side sill inner
facing each other, wherein the side sill outer having a longitudinal hollow
member with one open side provided with a number of holes with
mounting structure which are symmetrical on both sides of the side sill
outer about its center of gravity.
2. A side sill of vehicle as claimed in claim 1, wherein the holes comprise a
plurality of ED holes and jig holes which are symmetrically positioned on
both sides of sill outer about its center of gravity.
3. A side sill of vehicle as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the ED holes are
used for ED coating for anti-corrosion and for draining fluids during the
painting process.
4. A side sill of vehicle as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein
the jig hole is provided in the front end to mount with front hinge pillar
and in the rear end for mounting with part such as locker
compartment/wheel house.
5. A side sill of vehicle as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein
B-pillar of vehicle is mounted between the ED holes in which mounting
points of the B-pillar are symmetrical about C.G of the sill.
6. A side sill of vehicle as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein
any further mounting structure can be symmetrically provided on both
sides of the sill.

7. A side sill of vehicle as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein
the side sill outer is provided with side sill inner reinforcement.
8. A side sill of vehicle as claimed in any of the preceding claims, IS
associated with the advantageous features such as herein described.
9. A side sill of vehicle substantially as herein described with reference to
the accompanying drawings.
