SINGLE-SIDED SWING ARM FOR A VEHICLE
HERO MOTOCORP LIMITED, an Indian Company at: The Grand Plaza, Plot No.2, Nelson Mandela Road, Vasant Kunj- Phase -II, New Delhi, India, 110 070
THE FOLLOWING SPECIFICATION PARTICULARLY DESCRIBES THE INVENTION AND THE MANNER IN WHICH IT IS TO BE PERFORMED.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION:
[001] The present invention relates to a single-sided swing arm. In particular, the invention relates to sheet metal based single-sided swing arm having reduced weight, increased torsional stiffness, and easy to manufacture. The invention further provides a vehicle incorporating the same.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
[002] A swing arm for a vehicle supports a rear ground engaging member so as to swing in the vertical direction freely with respect to a body frame. The swing arm has a front end pivotally attached to a body frame, and pivotally supports a rear ground engaging member on a rear end that is a free end.A swing arm comes in two forms namely a single-sided swing arm and a double-sided swing arm. The single-sided swing arm comprises only one arm extending in the rearward direction supporting the rear ground engaging member while the double-sided swing arm comprises a pair of armsextending in a vehicular rearward direction supporting the rear ground engaging member.
[003] Particularly, in electric vehicles the batteries need to be kept as low as possible to reduce Centre of Gravity (CG). Also, for increasing a mileage of the electric vehicle (which is measured in kilometres per full charge), a size of the battery is increased. Increase in size of the battery results in increased size of packaging. Due to all of the above, the swing arm’slength increases by about 50% when compared to non-electric vehicles.
[004] Compared to a double-sided swing arm, a single sided swing arm is light weight and an obvious choice for an electric vehicle. However, in relation to the single-sided swing arm, increasing the length comes at a disadvantage of the reduced strength, and therefore has not been extensively adopted.
[005] Additionally, while it might be possible to attain the desired strength and desired length in a die-casted single-sided swing arm, the same has not been attained (to the best of the Applicant’s knowledge) in a sheet-metal-based single-sided swing arm. Since thecost of die-casted single-sided swing arms is higher as compared to sheet-metal-based single-sided swing arm,the later may be preferred choice (provided the desired strength and desired length are attained).
[006] Thus, there exists a need to provide single-sided swing arm for a vehicle that addresses one or more of the above mentioned disadvantages. In particular, there exists a need to provide a sheet-metal-based single-sided swing arm that addresses one or more of the above mentioned disadvantages.
