1. A starter motor mounting for a motor vehicle comprising an adapter with provision to locate a starter motor on one side and a bendix drive on the other, the starter motor side of the adaptor receiving the outer diameter of the starter motor, with the other side of the adaptor having a cup shaped member to locate the bendix drive on the inner diameter of the adaptor, the outer diameter locating itself on to the crankcase of the engine; the bendix drive side of the adaptor projecting sufficiently beyond the crankcase wall to locate itself in a support bracket, said adaptor and support bracket being fastened to each other and to the crankcase, with said support bracket locating the bendix clutch to engage with the starter reduction gear.
This invention relates to a starter motor mounting for a motor vehicle, more particularly, a motor vehicle, such as a motorcycle, scooter and auto rickshaw, among other vehicles, to which this invention is applicable.
In the known art, when the engine is provided with electric start, the starter motor is mounted on the crankcase part of the engine, where it is located in a spigot bore provided in the crank case. (a this type of arrangement the starter motor is an Integra) unit with bendix drive and reduction gear.
In another known arrangement, the starter motor and bendix drive are separate units independent fitted on the crankcase to form the drive. The bendix drive is fixed to the crankcase through a separate bracket.
In both the above known arrangements, when the engine is not fitted with an electric start facility, these mechanisms add more weight on the crank case and are uneconomical. Such mechanisms provided on the crank case are redundant when electric start is not provided for the engine.
The object of this invention is therefore to provide a starter motor mounting for an engine which overcomes the above drawbacks and, at the same time, is adaptable to cases where the engine may or may not have an electric start facility.
This invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate, by way of example, and not by way of limitation, one of various possible embodiments thereof.
The embodiment will be seen to comprise an adapter A with provision to locate a starter motor M on one side and a bendix drive B on the other. The starter motor side of the adaptor is made to receive the outer diameter D of the starter motor. The other side of the adaptor is provided with a cup shaped member C to locate the bendix drive B on the inner diameter of the adaptor. The outer diameter gets located on to crank case E of the engine.
When the bendix drive side of the adaptor is disposed on the crank case it projects sufficiently beyond the crankcase wall to locate a support bracket. The support bracket and adaptor are bolted together and to the crankoase using fasteners. The support bracket locates the bendix clutch, for keeping it in position, to engage with the starter reduction gear.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that various other embodiments of this invention are possible without departing from its scope and ambit
Claims
1. A starter motor mounting for a motor vehicle comprising an adapter with provision to locate a starter motor on one side and a bendix drive on the other, the starter motor side of the adaptor receiving the outer diameter of the starter motor, with the other side of the adaptor having a cup shaped member to locate the bendix drive on the inner diameter of the adaptor, the outer diameter locating itself on to the crankcase of the engine; the bendix drive side of the adaptor projecting sufficiently beyond the crankcase wall to locate itself in a support bracket, said adaptor and support bracket being fastened to each other and to the crankcase, with said support bracket locating the bendix clutch to engage with the starter reduction gear.
