DESC:FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a storage apparatus for cabinets or drawers or storage area of standard size or customized size. More particularly, the present invention relates to a storage apparatus having an expandable wire shelf that can be expanded and adjusted to a variety of sizes of cabinets or drawers as per the need of a user. The invention also relates to methods associated with the storage apparatus including methods of installation related thereto.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Now a days installing appropriately sized storage apparatus and cabinet is one of the biggest problems in every house and establishment for various reasons. For example, the size of the houses and buildings vary drastically. Some are very small, and we need to manage all the essential requirement of the person in limited space, whereas others are big and require non-standard fittings. Furthermore, kitchen appliances and utensils, etc. come in many shapes and sizes, thus requiring storage facilities that are able to cater to a large variety of shapes and sizes. Even though it is possible to provide customization through modular constructions, every home and establishment has issues with the storage apparatus in their kitchen or other utility areas, because existing cabinet systems do not adequately meet their needs or preferences.
For example, modern kitchens are designed and constructed in a modular form whereby it is possible to customize the look and functionality of a kitchen according to individual customer preference. Such design and construction include household and industrial kitchens and the layout and structure of such kitchens depends on customer preference and intended use. However, even in such kitchens the size and configuration of kitchen cabinets and drawers is limited due to the standardized size of existing storage apparatus.
Now consider a scenario where a civil kitchen needs to be installed. Here there are possibilities of not having standard vertical placement. Due to which non-standard drawer are required. For this company needs to manufacture a separate customize drawer. For this the customer has to wait longer for installation of drawer and also has to pay extra amount for customization. As there are many civil kitchens in India and to cater to the needs all customers need is a continuing challenge in view of space constraint with respect to storage area or unplanned storage space.
Existing solutions are unable to offer width or length or height or depth adjustment capability or address the issue of space constraints in storage area, thereby forcing customers to storage apparatus with solid wood bases which are usually customized and has fixed structures. This is not appropriate as the storage apparatus collects dirt and water residue thus rendering it unhygienic and insanitary in longer use for kitchen and other purposes. Hygiene and cleanliness are a must for kitchen where it is essential to have free flow of air to keep it clean and tidy.
Sometimes, to overcome the above problems, storage apparatus is customized on the premises by spot welding, but this solution is aesthetically unpleasing, and the results are inexact. Additionally, the finished product is not of good quality, as the integrity of the welding is weak and is prone to rust and breakage. Furthermore, such locally customized storage apparatus lack inherent strength.
Therefore, there is a constant need for a storage apparatus which addresses all the above-identified issues and which offers a simple solution addressing the space constraints and which is adjustable and expandable and can be installed in cabinets or drawers or storage area as per the needs of the users without extra unnecessary spacers for adjustments.

Referring to Fig. 1, the present invention provides a storage apparatus 10 configured to be installed in a cabinet or a drawer or a storage area comprising: a wire shelf 12 which is expandable and adjustable according to the requirement of a user; at least four panels including a front panel 14, back panel 16, left panel 18, right panel 20 joined with at least four brackets 22 forming an enclosure to hold various articles; at least one adjoining member 24 attached to the left panel 18 and right panel 20 at its bottom end 26 and wherein the wire shelf 12 is fixedly received in at least four adapters 28A, B, C, D at a bottom end 26 of the front panel 14, back panel 16 side and to the adjoining member 24 at the left panel 18 and right panel 20 side. The panels 14, 16, 18, 20 can be made of rigid material such as wood, plastic, metal or combination thereof or of like material having rigidity to hold weight.
Referring now to FIGS. 2A-2D a schematic view of an arrangement of side panel 18, 20 and adjoining member 24 fixed therewith is shown. The side panel 18, 20 are provided with a base support structure 30 to receive the adjoining member 24. The adjoining member 24 has a top surface 32 and a bottom surface 34 both having semi-circular grooves 36. The bottom surface 34 of the adjoining member 28 is received and fixed on the base support structure 30 of the side panels 18, 20. The adjoining member 24 is fixed with the base support structure 30 with the help of fastener means 38 which may include screws, nails, bolts or other joining elements and one or more holes 40 made in side panels 18, 20 in which the fastener means 38 are fixedly received. The adjoining member 24 can also be fixed with the base support structure 30 by using adhesives or glue or other known methods. The adjoining member 30 can be made of plastic, wood, metal or a combination thereof.
Both, the side panels 18, 20 have an inner wall 42 and an outer wall 44 wherein the inner wall 42 has a slanted profile. The slanted profile helps the wire shelf 12 to be easily received in the semi-circular grooves 36 of the adjoining member 24 and creates more inner space in the storage apparatus 10. The slanted profile also helps in removal of wire shelf 12 out of the storage apparatus 10. The wire shelf 12 can be easily pulled out by user out of storage apparatus 10 which is discussed in detail in following paragraph.
Referring now to Figs. 3A-3D which show the schematic view of the storage apparatus 10 having an expandable wire shelf 12. The expandable wire shelf 12 comprises a first shelf 46 and second shelf 48. The first shelf 46 is made of two holding rods i.e. a first holding rod 50 and a second holding rod 52 of equal length and arranged in parallel to each other. Likewise, the second shelf 48 is made of two holding rods i.e. a first holding rod 50A and a second holding rod 52A of equal length and arranged in parallel to each other. A plurality of wires 54 of equal length are permanently attached to the first 50, 50A and second 52, 52A holding rods in a direction opposite to the parallel direction of the first 50, 50A and second 52, 52A holding rods. The wires 54 are attached to the first 50, 50A and second 52, 52A holding rods at a distance of equal spacing 56. In the alternate embodiments, the wires 54 can be attached to the first 50, 50A and second 52, 52A holding rods at a distance of random lengths, for example without maintaining the distance of equal spacing 36 i.e. at a distance of different length. The wires 54 are joined to the first 50, 50A and second 52, 52A holding rods in an interconnected arrangement by Spot Welding Technique or other known techniques. The interconnected arrangement provide ease in moving first 46 and second 48 shelf to achieve the expanded position or feature of wire shelf 12. The interconnected arrangement is achieved by interweaving the plurality of wires 54 between first 46 and second shelf 48 and by connecting to first 50, 50A and second 52, 52A holding rods by Spot Welding Technique.
The wires 54 and first 50, 50A and second 52, 52A holding rods can be made as solid or hollow and can be made of plastic or metal or wood or a combination thereof or alternate rigid materials which have enough strength to hold weight. Thus, wires 54 and first 50, 50A and second 52, 52A holding rods can be made of materials which are rigid and sturdy such as by solid tubular wires or hollow tubes made of metal, plastic or any other alternative material or a combination thereof.
In order to make the wire shelf 12 expandable, the first 46 and second 48 shelf are interlocked with each other in that the wires 54 between first holding rod 50A of second shelf 48 and second holding rod 52 of first shelf 46 have a distance/spacing of half of equal spacing 58. Being in the interlocked arrangement, the first 46 and second 48 shelf are inseparable. Interlocking mechanism provides movement to the first 46 and second 48 shelf. The wire shelf 12 is expandable most when there is no spacing left between the first holding rod 50a of second shelf 48 and second holding rod 52 of first shelf 46. In such a fully expanded position, the first holding rod 50a of second shelf 48 and second holding rod 52 of first shelf 46 come into contact with each other and touch each other. Various positions of wire shelf 12 wherein the first shelf 46 and second shelf 48 can be expanded are shown in Figs. 4A-4E. The first shelf 46 and second shelf 48 are movable with respect to each other and can be collapsed in a manner as shown in Fig. 4A or expanded in a manner as shown in Fig. 4B, can be moved up or down as shown in Figs. 4D and 4E. The first 46 and second 48 shelf can be expanded as per the need of the user and be easily installed in the storage apparatus 10.
The wire shelf 12 is fixedly attached to the storage apparatus 10 through adapters 28A, B, C, D and semi-circular grooves 36 of the adjoining member 24. To explain this further, the adapters 28A, B are attached at a bottom end of the back panel 16 and adapters 28C, D are fixedly attached at a bottom end 26 of the front panel 14 with the help of fastener means 38. The location and alignment of adapters 28A, B, C, D are such that adapters 28A, B face adapters 28C, D creating a straight line. Each of adapters 28A, B, C, D as illustrated in FIG. 3D have an annular profile forming a groove 60 having an opening 62 to receive and fixedly hold the ends of first 50A and second 52 holding rods. The ends of first holding rod 50A is received in the grooves 60 of adapters 28A, 28C and the ends of second holding rod 52 is received in the grooves 60 of adapters 28B, 28D.
Each of adapters 28A, B, C, D are attached to front 14 and back 16 panels at a height or plane similar to the height and plane of the adjoining member 24 attached to the left 18 and right 20 panels. The adapters 28A, B, C, D act as lock clips to keep the wire shelf 12 fixedly and securely attached in the storage apparatus 10. The grooves 60 are stretchable in that, the grooves 60 receive the ends of holding rods 50A, 52 by a snap fit action and keeps the ends of holding rods 50A and 52 retained securely within the grooves 60. Likewise, the semi-circular grooves 36 of the adjoining member 24 has a profile to receive and securely retain the first holding rod 50 and second holding rod 52 by a snap fit action. Thus, to attach the wire shelf 12 to the storage apparatus 10, the wire shelf 12 can be easily expanded to the desired size matching to the size of the storage apparatus 10 and be pushed therethrough with slight ‘push force’ to be fixedly received in by the semi-circular grooves 36 of the adjoining member 24 and the grooves 60 of adapters 28A, B, C, D. Once received in the grooves 36, 60, the wire-shelf is ready to be used. If needed, the wire shelf 12 can be easily pulled out of the grooves 36, 60 by use of a slight ‘pull force’.
Referring now to FIGS. 5A-5B which illustrate a schematic view of the expandable wire shelf 12 with additional fitments used to hold various dinnerware or cookware articles in accordance with the present invention. A variety of fitments 64 of different shapes having multiple utilities can be attached to the wire shelf 12 with the help of one or more clamps 66. In Figs, 4A-4B, the fitment 64 is a rack which is fixedly attached to the wires 54 of the wire shelf 12. The fitment 64 can be used to safely hold a variety of articles such as, pots, pans, dishes, bottles and/or other tools, and utensils.
The wires 54 are joined to the first 50, 50A and second 52, 52A holding rods in an interconnected arrangement by Spot Welding Technique. The interconnected arrangement provide ease in moving first 46 and second 48 shelf to achieve the expanded position or feature of wire shelf 12. Spot welding technique is a process in which contacting metal surface points are joined by the heat obtained from resistance to electric current. It is a subset of electric resistance welding. Workpieces are held together under pressure exerted by electrodes. Typically, the sheets are in the 0.5 to 3 mm (0.020 to 0.118 in) thickness range. The process uses two shaped copper alloy electrodes to concentrate welding current into a small "spot" and to simultaneously clamp the sheets together. Forcing a large current through the spot will melt the metal and form the weld. The attractive feature of spot welding is that a lot of energy can be delivered to the spot in a very short time (approximately 10–100 milliseconds). That permits the welding to occur without excessive heating of the remainder of the sheet. The wires 54 can be joined to the first 50, 50A and second 52, 52A holding rods by other known methods or techniques.
The arrangements of the panels of the invention are not limited to the Tuff advance panel arrangement or Nova pro panel arrangement. The back height of the Tuff Advance Panel is calculated through the formula: Back Width (Internal Storage Width -89mm ± 0.5mm) and the back height of the Nova Pro Panel can be calculated through the formula: Back Width (Internal Storage Width -58mm ± 0.5mm).
Another aspect of the present invention relates to a method of installation of the storage apparatus 10 in a cabinet or drawer or storage area, the method comprising the steps of: forming an enclosure by at least four panels including a front panel 14, back panel 16, left panel 18, right panel 20 by joining with at least four brackets 22; attaching at least one adjoining member 24 to the left panel 18 and right panel 20 at its bottom end 26; fixedly attaching a wire shelf 12 which is expandable and adjustable according to the requirement of a user in at least four adapters 28A, B, C, D at a bottom end 26 of the front panel 14 and back panel 16 side and to the adjoining member 24 at the left panel 18 and right panel 20 side. One or more fastener means 38 are used to fixedly attach the panels, 14, 16, 18, 20, brackets 22 and adjoining members 24, adapters 28A, B, C, D with each other in order to form the storage apparatus 10.
The wire shelf 12 is fixedly safely secured to the storage apparatus 10 by a slight “push force” and pulled out therefrom by a slight “pull force” exerted by the user.
The construction and shape of the wire shelf 12 according to the present disclosure provides a simple configuration. The simple and compact design of the wire shelf 12 is advantageous in that it can be used with a new as well as old installation as per the need of a user. Moreover, the design and construction of wire shelf 12 is easy to use, install and remove. In addition, such design greatly reduces manufacturing costs and is efficient, effective and simple in its construction and use.
