Specification

FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to a system and a method to remove taper
sleeve from a Tungsten Carbide ring deployed in rolling of bar in a finished bar
rolling mills.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
In modern long product manufacturing mills, the finishing bar rolling mill
is generally a No Twist Mill (NTM) block where the bar is rolled using Tungsten
Carbide rings (Fig.1.). These Tungsten Carbide rings are used in pairs in a stand
and also replaced in pairs. After rolling of bars for certain period through these
rings, as defined by finished product quality requirements, operational
requirements etc., they are replaced in pair by fresh pairs of Tungsten Carbide
rings.
As shown in Fig.2. sleeve of taper bore is used to mount Tungsten
Carbide ring on taper mandrel. The taper sleeve is cooled in a freezer and shrink
fitted in bore of Tungsten Carbide ring in advance. The assembly of Tungsten
Carbide ring and Taper sleeve is hydraulically pressed on taper mandrel of No
Twist Mill module.
No tool is available to remove taper sleeve from Tungsten Carbide ring. As
shown in Fig.6 the taper sleeve is removed by using solid nylon cylinder of
diameter equal to the inner bore of Tungsten Carbide ring. The ring with sleeve
is placed upside down on two metal supports to create sufficient space
underneath for the sleeve to drop. Then one person holds the nylon cylinder on
bottom part of sleeve and another person hammers on it until the sleeve is
removed from Tungsten Carbide ring. This process is time consuming, creates
noise due to impact of hammer on nylon cylinder and very unsafe.

OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
Therefore, it is an object of the invention to propose a system and a
method to remove taper sleeve from a Tungsten Carbide ring deployed in rolling
of bar in a finished bar rolling mills which is capable of avoiding physical effort
which is hazardous and very tiring.
Another object of the invention is to propose a system and a method to
remove taper sleeve from a Tungsten Carbide ring deployed in rolling of bar in a
finished bar rolling mills which is capable of making the operation smooth and in
significantly less time eliminating noise due to impact of hammer.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE
INVENTION
In order to make an easy, smooth operation of removal of the sleeve (2)
from the bore of the Tungsten Carbide ring (2) a hydraulic press machine (M) is
developed. The system to remove the sleeve (2) from the Tungsten Carbide ring
(TC ring) comprises of the following:
i) Main frame,
ii) Trolley,
iii) Hydraulic cylinder,
iv) Hydraulic pump,
v) Solid nylon cylinder.
i) Main frame with two rails (Fig.4.):
It consists of a wide base plate (3) on which two vertical supports (4) are
welded. Another plate (5) is welded on the supports horizontally. The top plate
(5) has one centre hole (6) to fix hydraulic cylinder (9) with the help of two
special nuts, above and below the top plate. At the right hand side of top plate
hydraulic pump (7) with pressure gauge is bolted.
There are two rails (8), made by square section, are welded across the
base plate (3) parallel to each other at defined gap between them. On these two
rails, trolley (11) is moved as required. Stoppers are welded at predefined
position on both ends of rails to stop the trolley at two fixed points.
As the name suggests, main frame houses other parts in it.
ii) Trolley with wheels (Fig.5.):
The trolley (11) has a base plate, above which side supports (12) are
welded at two sides. Top support plate is welded on top of both side supports

with required gap between them. Height of side support plate (12) is more than
the height of sleeve (2) with additional space provided to take out removed
sleeve under the Tungsten Carbide ring (1). Rubber pad is bolted on the plates
to prevent any damage to Tungsten Carbide ring during sleeve removal. Centre
marking is provided on rubber pad to facilitate positioning of Tungsten Carbide
ring on it. One plate is welded at the rear end of side supports to provide
strength to the trolley. The trolley has four collared wheels with bearings, fixed
in trolley bottom with help of axles.
The trolley supports the Tungsten Carbide ring during sleeve removal.
iii) Hydraulic cylinder (9) :
Standard cylinder of stroke length sufficient to clear sleeve from Tungsten
Carbide ring.
iv) Pump (7) to operate hydraulic cylinder:
v) Solid nylon cylinder:
The cylinder diameter is 2mm less than bore of ring and height is
sufficient to withstand hydraulic pressure of sleeve removal and can be used for
long period.
OPERATING PROCEDURE:
i) The trolley is pulled up to front stopper.
ii) Tungsten Carbide ring is placed with sleeve, upside down, on the trolley.
Centring of ring during placing is ensured with the help of mark provided
on rubber pad.

iii) Nylon cylinder is placed on sleeve in ring bore.
iv) Trolley is pushed up to track stopper. This will ensure centring of ring with
hydraulic cylinder,
v) Hydraulic cylinder is operated by pump until the sleeve is completely
removed from ring,
vi) Hydraulic cylinder is retracted fully by releasing pressure,
vii) The trolley is pulled up to stopper. Ring is removed from top. Sleeve and
cylinder removed from trolley,
viii) Above steps are repeated to remove sleeve as and when required.
ADVANTAGES OVER THE PRIOR ART:
i) The sleeve removal process using the invented product becomes faster
than previous process,
ii) Generation of noise due to impact of hammer on nylon is eliminated,
iii) Less tiring as requirement of hammering eliminated,
iv) The product is economically designed.
