A System And Method For Controlling A Digital Television From A Personal Computer / Laptop

Abstract: The main object of the present invention is to provide a system for controlling a digital television (DTV) from a personal computer / laptop by wireless streaming television audio / video data to the personal computer or laptop (henceforth referred to as (PCL) and viewing or monitoring the data from the PCL. Another object of the invention is to route the audio / video stream to a remotely placed personal computer or laptop without a TV tuner card by wireless transmission of the audio / video signals from a television set. Yet another object of the invention is to control the television in administrator mode as well as user modes, where in the administrator mode - the controller in the PCL would be able to switch off and fully control the television set from the PCL and in the user mode limited facility is available, especially excluding the "power - off" facility, and other "configurable functionalities". A further object of the invention is to move the television to a power saving mode, and the entire transmission is moved to the personal computer in a small windows which can be minimized to allow the user to continue working as well as watching television at leisure. A still further object of the invention is to enable the user on the personal computer or laptop (PLC) to perform parental control to the television. This will allow a user to keep working on the laptop, and keep a control on the television as discussed above. One more object of the present invention is to provide controls in Samsung"s proprietary "television functionality and menu formats" and enable the user at PCL to perform similar control on the television (albeit this is also configurable from the control application of the present invention. The PCL of the present invention is provided with means for allowing the user complete / limited control of a television from an application on the PCL. The PCL is provided with a soft remote control which shall enable the user at the PCL to watch what is being currently watched at a particular channel of the TV. It also allows the PCL user to watch what a TV user might not be watching currently on the TV, i.e. a PCL user might be watching and enjoying channel A, whereas the user sitting at the television might watch channel B. The user(s) sitting on the PCL would be able to monitor and control the television. The shutdown procedure is as per Samsung"s proprietary protocol and shall be incorporating the following scenarios: PCL on, TV on; PCL on, TV off; PCL off, TV on; and PCL off, TV off. The menu provided here is in line with Samsung"s proprietary television features. The soft remote control would also be in line Samsung"s remote controls (can be changed to Universal Remote control).

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates generally to a system and method for controlling a digital
television (DTV) from a personal computer / laptop (PCL). More particularly the invention
relates to a system for controlling a digital television (DTV) from a personal computer /
laptop (PCL), by wireless streaming of television audio / video data to the personal
computer or laptop.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Digital television (DTV) is a new type of broadcasting technology that can transmit the
information used to make the TV picture and sound as data bits (like a computer). A
digital broadcaster can carry more information than is currently possible with analog
broadcast technology. Digital television (DTV) technology can also be used to provide
interactive video and data services that are not possible with current analog technology.
Digital television (DTV) devices are capable of displaying still digital images stored in digital
cameras, camcorders universal serial bus (USB) storage, or local hard disks by media
viewer kind of applications available for Digital televisions (DTVs).

US Patent US 6, 008, 77 relates to wireless connectivity between a personal computer (PC)
and a television for the television to interact remotely with the PC.
A local PC interface unit is coupled to receive video and audio output signals from the PC
for converting the signals generated by the PC to a suitable format. The PC can then
transmit the converted audio / video signals over RF wireless link to a remote TV for
playback. This document does not provide real time streaming of broad cast signal and
playback on a PC / laptop.
Document US 7, 098, 968 discloses a TV image conversion device for turning on or turning
off a computer with the help of a multi media remote control.
US Patent 6, 288, 716 describes a browser based system and method for commanding and
controlling home network / devices. The method comprises connecting, a first home
device for displaying user interface data and a second home device for storing the interface
data in a selected format, to a home network. The first device receives data from the
second device over the network and displays the user interface as defined by the data.

US 7, 006, 006 discloses a system and method for controlling a system and method for
controlling home entertainment units using a combination of an RF transceiver and an
infrared transmitter. The combination converts RF signal data into IR signal data
associated with the home entertainment unit and controls the unit with the transmitted IR
signal data.
Document US 2006 / 0288 370 provides a user with a graphic representation of a remote
control device, on a display for, controlling operation of electronic appliances by
transmitting a control code from a single, easy to use transmitter.
US Patent 6, 263, 503 discloses an apparatus for implementing a wireless television system
with a wireless base station coupled to a selectable program source for processing, and
combining various program sources to produce a processed stream and transmitting
program information using a responsive transmitter to wireless portable display devices for
flexible viewing at remote locations.
US Patent 5, 708, 961 describes a digital network using digital multiplexing for on-premise
wireless video distribution of multiplexed channels.

There was therefore a need for a system that can effectively control a digital television
(DTV) from a personal computer / laptop (PCL) using wireless streaming of DTV audio /
video data to the PCL.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The main object of the present invention is to provide a system for controlling a digital
television (DTV) from a personal computer / laptop by wireless streaming television audio /
video data to the personal computer or laptop (henceforth referred to as (PCL) and viewing
or monitoring the data from the PCL.
Another object of the invention is to route the audio / video stream to a remotely placed
personal computer or laptop without a TV tuner card by wireless transmission of the audio
/ video signals from a television set.
Yet another object of the invention is to control the television in administrator mode as well
as user modes, where in the administrator mode - the controller in the PCL would be able
to switch off and fully control the television set from the PCL and in the user mode limited
facility is available, especially excluding the "power - off" facility, and other "configurable
functionalities".

A further object of the invention is to move the television to a power saving mode, and the
entire transmission is moved to the personal computer in a small windows which can be
minimized to allow the user to continue working as well as watching television at leisure.
A still further object of the invention is to enable the user on the personal computer or
laptop (PLC) to perform parental control to the television. This will allow a user to keep
working on the laptop, and keep a control on the television as discussed above.
One more object of the present invention is to provide controls in Samsung's proprietary
"television functionality and menu formats" and enable the user at PCL to perform similar
control on the television (albeit this is also configurable from the control application of the
present invention.
The PCL of the present invention is provided with means for allowing the user complete /
limited control of a television from an application on the PCL.
The PCL is provided with a soft remote control which shall enable the user at the PCL to
watch what is being currently watched at a particular channel of the TV. It also allows the
PCL user to watch what a TV user might not be watching currently on the TV, i.e. a PCL
user might be watching and enjoying channel A, whereas the user sitting at the television
might watch channel B. The user(s) sitting on the PCL would be able to monitor and
control the television.

The shutdown procedure is as per Samsung's proprietary protocol and shall be
incorporating the following scenarios: PCL on, TV on; PCL on, TV off; PCL off, TV on; and
PCL off, TV off.
The menu provided here is in line with Samsung's proprietary television features. The soft
remote control would also be in line Samsung's remote controls (can be changed to
Universal Remote control).
The communication from the television to the laptop / personal computer and back from
the personal computer / laptop is Samsung's proprietary protocol, which shall handle the
communication as well as decide the group of devices and the channel of communication.
The television system is assumed to be having a wireless connectivity and the present
invention does not claim wireless connectivity of the television to any other device.
In the present invention the personal computer / laptop will have an application running on
it which shall control the initiation of the contact / connection between the television device
and the personal computer / laptop and the invention can be extended to both LAN and
WAN - wired or wireless. There can also be more than one windows on the PCL for
displaying contents from more than one television source.

No streaming of audio / video data to personal computer is claimed in the present
invention.
In the present invention the stream from the television can be shown in any media player,
or the one Samsung provides as per user's configuration, and is minimizable / draggable
just like any other windows - based application, no "windows-properties" are claimed in
the present invention.
US 6, 008, 777 discloses conversion of video / audio signals generated by the PCL into a
format suitable for playback on an ordinary home TV. The present invention allows
playback of TV programs on the PCL.
In US 6, 263, 503 the wireless base station processes and combines various program
sources to produce a processed stream. The present invention does not claim any such
method of producing a processed stream.
US 5, 708, 961 discloses on premises wireless video distribution using digital multiplexing.
No such distribution aspect of video / audio stream is described in the present invention.

The present invention provides a system for controlling a digital television (DTV) with
wireless connectivity of coded data to other devices, said system comprising: a personal
computer / laptop (PC / L) for receiving coded wireless streaming of television audio /
video data from said DTV; means for decoding said coded data; and means for providing
complete or limited control of the television from an application running on said computer /
laptop."
BREIF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
The invention can now be described in detail with the help of the figures of the
accompanying drawings in which
Figure 1 shows schematically the system of the present invention.
Figure 2 shows the flow diagram of the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
As illustrated in Figure 1, the television device is represented by block 1. The user's work
area with the personal computer / laptop (PC / L) is shown in block 2 and block 3
represents the PC / L monitor / screen.

The television device / having wireless connectivity is linked to the personal computer /
laptop 2 via wireless link 4 for showing stream of TV audio / video data as shown in block
3' of PC /L monitor / screen 3.
The personal computer / laptop provided with means (software / hardware device) for
providing complete / limited control of the digital television from an application running on
the PC / L.
The menu provided (block 5) is in line with Samsung's proprietary television features. A
soft remote control 6 enables the user of the personal computer / laptop to watch what is
being currently displayed and watched at a particular channel on the TV. With the help of
the remote control 6 the PC / L user can also view what the TV user might not be viewing
currently on the TV. A remote control 6 is also used to control the television from the PC /
L
The stream from the television can be shown in any media player, or the one Samsung
provides as per user's configuration, and is minimizable / draggable just as any other
windows program.

As shown in Figure 2, an application running on the PC / L is shown in block 100. The pre-
defined procedures and protocols determined by Samsung (block 200) are discovering the
interoperable Samsung devices and complete hand-shaking procedures represented by
block 300 establishing connection between DTV 1 and PC / L 2 represented by block 400;
sending encoded stream from television 1 over the wireless link 4 is represented by block
500; decoding the stream by the application running at the PC / L 2 and presenting it in a
player capable of displaying streamed audio / video input is represented by block 600; and
sending the data from the DTV 1 to PC / L 2 and sending control packets to control
functionality (as described in the Functionality Set a Samsung proprietary protocol) from
the PC / L 2 to DTV 1 represented by block 700. Block 800 represents shuttling down PC /
L 2 or DTV 1 or the application for closing the connection between them. The functionality
of the control is at the discretion of Samsung Electronics Company Limited.
The stream from the television can be shown in any media player, or the one Samsung
provides as per user's configuration, and is minimizable / draggable just as in any other
windows - based application.
The proposed invention removes the need to switch from DTV to a separate computer,
laptop, and PC-based application for encoding a movie from digital still images and thus
removes the need to switch from DTV to the said devices.

The television system is assumed to be having a wireless connectivity and the present
invention does not claim the wireless connectivity of television to any other device in the
present invention.
The present invention shall be having an application running on the personal computer
which shall control the initiation of the contact / connection between the television device
and the personal computer / laptop.
At the present the only alternative to the invention is PC / Laptop - based applications.
The same can be extended to other Samsung devices (example handhelds). Presently, the
scenario of wireless network is being considered and the same can be extended to both
LAN and WAN - wired / wireless.
A sequence of MENU items configured for controlling and operating movie encoding
procedure in the following way:

the programmability of the television (various television features to be controlled can be
configured).
The communication from the television to the laptop / personal computer and back from
the personal computer / laptop is Samsung's proprietary protocol, which shall handle the
communication as well as decide the group of devices and the channel of communication.

WE CLAIM
1. A system for controlling a digital television (DTV) with wireless connectivity of
coded data to other devices, said system comprising:
- a personal computer / laptop (PC / L) for receiving coded wireless streaming
of television audio / video data from said DTV;
- means for decoding said coded data; and
means for providing complete or limited control of the television from an
application running on said computer / laptop."
2. The system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the streaming of audio visual television
data from said DTV to said PC / L is over a wireless link.
3. The system as claimed in claim 1, wherein said PC / L is provided with a soft
remote control for enabling the user of PC / L to monitor and control the DTV with
the aid of a Samsung proprietary menu and also for viewing DTV programs on the
PC/L

4. The system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the application of said PC / L can be
extended to both LAN and WAN, wired or wireless.
5. The system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the PCL is provided with more than one
windows for displaying contents from more than one television sources.
6. A method for controlling a digital television (DTV) with wireless connectivity to other
devices from a personal computer / laptop (PC / L) comprising the steps of:

- running an application on the PC / L;
- determining Samsung's pre-defined procedures and protocol;
- establishing connection between the DTV and the PC / L;
- sending encoded stream from stream of audio / video data from the DTV
over a wireless link;
- decoding the coded stream by the application at the PC / L;

- presenting the decoded television data in a player capable of displaying
streamed audio / video input sending the data from the DTV to PCL; and
- sending control packets to control the functionality of the DTV from the PCL
to the DTV in accordance with Samsung's proprietary functionality protocol.

7. The method as claimed in claim 6, wherein the stream from the DTV can be shown
in any media player or the one provided by Samsung according to the user's
configuration and the display is minimizable / draggable just as in any other
windows based application.
8. The method as claimed in claim 6, comprising the step of configuring a sequence of
menu items for controlling and operating movie encoding by selecting administrative
rights, selecting features and controlling programmability of the DTV features to be
controlled.
9. The method as claimed in claim 6, wherein communication from the DTV to the PCL
and back is handled by Samsung proprietary protocol, which will decide the group of
devices and channel of communication.

10. A system for cotrolling a digital television (DTV) with wireless connectivity of coded
data to other devices, substantially as herein described and illustrated in the
accompanying drawings.
