Abstract: A system and method for displaying high dynamic range image on a low dynamic range display is described. In one embodiment the method includes using a nonlinear curve applied on cumulative distribution function (CDF) of binarized histogram of image intensity values. Further in an embodiment, varying the shape of the nonlinear mapping curve through gain and midpoint selection options may be provided.
1. A method for displaying high dynamic range image on a low dynamic
range display, comprising steps of:
receiving a plurality of signals as analog data from a detector representative
of a scene;
converting of analog data to digital data;
pre-processing of the digital data to generate pre-processed data;
generating of histogram on the pre-processed data; and
non-linear mapping of a cumulative distribution function (CDF) data relating
to image intensity value of the scene.
2. The method as in claim 1, wherein the step of non-linear mapping of a
cumulative distribution function (CDF) data relating to image intensity value
of the scene, further comprising steps of:
receiving pre-processed image histogram data as input;
calculating number of valid histogram bin levels based on a threshold
function;
finding a mid-histogram bin point and its corresponding bin value;
applying a non-linear mapping function on first half of a cumulative
distribution function (CDF) of a binarized histogram of the image intensity
values;
applying the non-linear mapping function on a second half of a cumulative
distribution function (CDF) of a binarized histogram of the image intensity
values; and
performing non-linear mapping on the CDF in accordance therewith display
dynamic range for displaying on a display.
3. The method as in claim 2, wherein histogram projection mechanism is used for calculating number of valid histogram bin levels based on a threshold function.
4. The method as in claim 2, Further comprising the steps of: intermittently shifting the mid-histogram bin point through a user-interface.
5. The method as in claim 2, Further comprising the step of: intermittently applying manual gain adjustment through user interface.
6. The method as in claim 1, wherein the step of pre-processing of the digital data to generate pre-processed data, further comprises steps of:
receiving a plurality of signals from a detector representative of a scene;
performing Non-uniformity correction (NUC) and Bad Pixel replacement if
the plurality of signals is from Infra-red (IR) detector otherwise collecting the
data for storing in memory;
applying of a low pass filter; and
extracting details from the filtered data and original data using subtraction.
7. The method as in claim 6, Further comprising the steps of: intermittently feeding of an Infinite Impulse Response(IIR) parameter through a user interface.
8. The method as in claim 6, further comprising the steps of: Intermittently feeding of low pass filter parameters through a user interface.
9. The method as in claim 6, Further comprising the steps of: intermittently receiving detail parameter from user.
10. A system for displaying high dynamic range image on a low dynamic range display, comprising
atleast one sensor for receiving an input imagery from a scene being
captured;
a memory device to store temporary image data or configuration
parameters of a processor;
a control unit to provide an interface between a user and the processor and allow user to alter image rendering related parameters; and a processor, configured to process the imagery received from the sensor and provide dynamic range mapping of the captured image on to the display using a nonlinear curve applied on cumulative distribution function (CDF) of binarized histogram of the image intensity values.
11. The system as in claim 10, wherein the processor further comprises of: a Pre-processing module configured to perform the operations of Non-uniformity correction (NUC), Bad pixel replacement and filtering to remove temporal noise;
a Non-linear Dynamic range mapping module configured to non-linearly map the cumulative distribution function (CDF) data to display on a low dynamic range display device.
