DESC:FIELD OF INVENTION:
The present invention relates to the field of prevention or removal of bio film formation and flushing of the treatment train in a water purifier. More specifically, the invention provides an efficient system and a method for reducing/preventing the formation of the biofilm in the water purifier. It also helps in flushing all the filters in treatment train which in turn reduces the stagnation time and the microbial division.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
The following background discussion includes information that may be useful in understanding the present invention. It is not an admission that any of the information provided herein is prior art or relevant to the presently claimed invention, or that any publication specifically or implicitly referenced is prior art.
The major issue in the domestic water system is the issue with the formation of bio film inside the tank on continuous usage or due to long storage. The sources of microbes are due to the stagnation of water in the post RO filter which may be a source of microbes in the tank.
A biofilm is a layer of microorganisms contained in a matrix (slime layer), which forms on surface/s in contact with water. Biofilm formation on the inner surface of storage vessels have been reported to offer a suitable medium for the growth of microorganisms and consequently to contribute to the deterioration of drinking water quality in homes. Studies have shown high counts of heterotrophic bacteria and faecal coliforms in stored drinking water, which by far has exceeded the limits set for human consumption. Given the right conditions, a small number of microorganisms in water may also provide a seed, which causes multiplication of the microorganism/s in the storage containers.
There is a direct relationship between the degree of bacterial re-growth on the factors like drinking water storage vessels, the storage materials and the quality of the intake water [(such as temperature, turbidity and concentrations of organic nutrient (dissolved organic carbon–DOC)].
Biofilm formation in the storage tank is a common issue in the domestic water filter. Currently there are many technologies to eliminate the same. Few are disclosed in the following prior art documents. However, the technology in the below mentioned document/s is not efficient and suffers with one or the other drawbacks.
US6464868B1 provides a system and method for removing biofilm from, and/or for preventing biofilm from forming on an interior surface of a conduit that receives a supply of water. The system disclosed by the invention has a means for enabling said supply of water to said conduit, means for disabling said supply of water to said conduit, means for passing an ozone-containing gas through said conduit when said supply of water is disabled. To remove the biofilm from water purification system ozone gas is used. However, the system is not efficient and needs additional means for supplying the gas to the storage tank.
CN201420664892 discloses water purification, in particular, to an ozone oxidation reactor and mechanism of bio film removal in drinking water. However, the technology disclosed in CN ‘892 requires an additional ozone oxidation reactor which makes the system expensive.
US9470007B2 provides a filtration process of water from a tank and is based on emitted ultrasonic waves to reduce or prevent bio film formation on walls of the storage tank. The process includes emitting ultrasonic waves in the tank and adding a flocculent agent to the water, which is not an efficient method for removing the biofilm formation on the wall.
To an extent the available method and system for removal of biofilm are not completely effective. The root cause of biofilm formation is mainly due to the water getting stagnated in the post RO filters. The auto flush mechanism in the water purifier flush only till RO filter to avoid the bio fouling on the RO membrane. If the purifier is not used for more than 30 days there may be condition where the user has to change the complete filtration train. Even the manufacturer claims if the water is stagnated for more than 48hours it is advised to drain the tank.
Hence, there is a need of an efficient method and system for preventing or reducing the bio film formation in a water storage tank and particularly a cost effective and efficient method for flushing the post and pre RO filters at predetermined time in order to avoid the stagnation of water in the filters. The Invention in order to solve the problem provides a system and method based on auto flushing/ customised mechanism for avoiding the stagnation of water in the filter and reducing the bio film formation in the storage tank. This can be time based or manual process or through an intelligent process.

The present invention relates to a system and method of reducing the biofilm formation in the water storage tank when water is stagnated and flushing of filter train at predetermined timing in order to reduce or eliminate the growth of biofilm forming organism in the filters. Stagnation of water leads to microbial growth which in turn leads to biofilm formation. The source of microbes in the tank is from the water stagnated in the filter, mainly carbon filter. The present invention provides a system and method based on auto flushing mechanism for the filter of treatment train on stipulated timing which in turn reduces the microbial entry into the water storage tank.
The water purification system (also called “unit” hereinafter) works in a manner that the inlet water enters the water purifier, which passes through plurality of filters. The tank gets filled and water gets stored in the tank. The unit will restart only if the pump starts again. The filter will have dead volume of water which will get stagnated when pump is not working. Stored water will pave a way for microbial division. When the pump restarts pumping, the water which is microbial contaminated enters the tank. This will divide more and lead to biofilm formation. The system and method provided by the present invention flushes the water in the filters and it will manually or automatically drain water in the tank. If the pump is not working for specified time, the water purification unit will enter the flush mode. During flush mode, the purification cycle gets stopped and only the flushing will happen. All the filters in the system will get flushed at a specific time interval until the flushing mode stops, through the inventive method and system as described below.
