FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a system and method for providing display
information from a computer to an ethemet monitor. The invention pertains to
ethernet enabled monitor / display device. The drawing information from the
computer is transferred to the monitor via ethernet and the data is taken in the
monitor and displayed. The ethernet monitor can be used as primary monitor or
a secondary monitor. In the case of the secondary monitor there is no need for
additional graphics card and the PCs ethernet interface can be used to end the
information to the monitor. The monitor will have necessary hardware to send
the display data to the screen. The advantage is that the physical limitation of
the monitor can be avoided and the monitor can be anywhere in the network
world. The VGA / DVI input interface is not needed in this monitor.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Sync Master 403 TN provides a 40" LCD monitor featuring ethernet connection
and Samsung's management software which allows users to control a number of
displays at the same time and provide unique content to multiple monitor from
the computer source.

-3-
The method transmits media files (photo, audio and movie files) and office files
(Power Point, Excel World, HTML and PDF files) existing on a server to screens
connected to a network using the server / client architecture. Here the format
for transfer is provided by software and is stored inside the monitor. The
application in the monitor fetches the files from the server according to the
format.
The LCD monitor specified in the prior art uses ethemet connection for displaying
information.
It works as a content display device where the contents (file / image / video,
etc.) to be displayed have to be selected by the user using the application. The
monitor given in the known method does not work as a secondary / primary
computer monitor.
The content is limited to the images / videos etc which needs to be selected and
given by the user. This does not work as a normal computer monitor but as a
content display device. The files to be displayed on the screen and the time for
which files to be displayed and information sent are to be selected by the user.

-4-
The working of the prior art monitor is also different from that of a normal
monitor. The reference of the content to be displayed is sent to the monitor.
The monitor then pulls the particular file / image from the server and displays it
in the places. The processing of the file / image / audio, etc. are done inside the
prior art monitor.
The monitor given in the prior art does not provide any method for transferring
selected portion of the monitor screen based on changes in the display contents.
There is no correlation between an actual PC monitor and the one mentioned in
the prior art. The monitor given in the prior art is a system with an operating
system and processor to do all PC related operations.
There exists a need for a method where there is no limitation of what is to be
displayed as the display device functions as a normal monitor.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a network-based monitor
for displaying information from a PC. The ethemet monitor is a display device
which has an ethemet interface to receive the display images. It does not need
the DVI / VGA port for passing the data to be displayed.

-5-
The drawing information from the computer is transferred to the monitor via
ethernet and the data is taken in the monitor and displayed. The ethernet
monitor can be used as primary monitor or a secondary monitor. In the case of
the secondary monitor there is no need for additional graphics card and the PS's
ethernet interface can be used to send the information to the monitor. The
monitor will have necessary hardware to send the display data to the screen.
The advantage is that the physical limitation of the monitor can be avoided and
the monitor can be anywhere in the network world.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention is about transferring the contents of a desktop (primary or
extended) to an ethernet monitor. The whole desktop information or a part of
the screen is sent on update in the contents of the desktop.
In the present invention the PC does all the processing and sending to the
monitor the portion of the image to be displayed in the desired format.

-6-
The present invention is to be used to display computer monitor information in
an ethernet enabled monitor. The drawing information from the computer is
transferred to the monitor via ethernet and the data is taken in the monitor and
displayed. The ethernet monitor can be used as primary monitor or a secondary
monitor. In the case of the secondary monitor there is no need for additional
graphics card and the PC's ethernet interface can be used to send the

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
The invention can now be described in detail with the help of the figures of the
accompanying drawings in which:

-8-
Figure 1 shows the basic structure of the present invention.
Figure 2 illustrates the operation of the invention.
Figure 3 shows the method of implementing the
basic operation of the invention.
Figure 4 is a flowchart of the method of the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The basic structure of the invention is illustrated in Figure 1. The display
information from a computer 1 is passed to an ethernet monitor 3 via a network
2.
Figure 2 shows the basic operation of the invention. The display data
corresponding to the primary or extended display of a PC is optionally encoded
and sent to the monitor via ethernet 2. The monitor 3 receives the data and
optionally decodes it and draws it on to the screen. The ethernet monitor is
used as a plug and play device for dynamically enabling or disabling the display
to the monitor.

-9-
Figure 3 illustrates one implementation method to the basic operation. The
graphics engine (a) of the OS in the computer renders the drawing information
to the frame buffer / graphics adapter memory when any change occurs in the
display.
A graphics engine (a) of the operating system (OS) is responsible for the
graphics subsystem of the OS and will be used by the OS for rendering
information to the desktop. The frame buffer is the memory area, which
contains the information which is displayed on the computer screen.
A virtual / graphics adapter (b) with software for drawing by the OS. The image
portion and codec selector (c) will select the changing image in the whole
desktop or the selected portion of the desktop. The codec selector (c) selects
the codec for optionally encoding the image portion. A networking layer (d) is
used to send the encoded image portion to the desired network monitor(s). The
information sent will contain the details regarding the position where the image
is to be displayed and the codec used for encoding.

-10-
A second networking layer (e) in the ethernet monitor 3 will be used to receive
the encoded image portion information sent to it by the PC 1.
A decoder selector (f) selects the decoder according to the information sent from
the PC 1 and decodes the received encoded image portion.
A decoded information is updated in the display buffer (g) of the monitor 3 in the
position where the image is to be displayed.
A VGA signal generator (g) in the monitor 3 gives signal to the display panel (h)
to display the updated display buffer.
The method of the present invention can be extended to a plurality of ethernet
monitors. This can also be extended to any other embedded display device. It
can also be extended to ethernet monitors connected to internet.
The changed information can be from the whole screen or from a selective part
of the screen. In the case of selective portion of the screen, the information
change of that particular region will be sent to the monitor after selective

-11-
encoding. The changed information will be selectively encoded / compressed
and sent to the monitor via the ethernet interface. The decision to do
compression / encoding can be dynamically selected depending on different
parameters like size of the information to be sent, network traffic etc.
Alternatively the encoding can be from a content based. If the information is of
say for example a fast changing video, the codec can be one type and if the
information is of say a window movement, it can be encoded using a different
codec. The codec to be used can also be selected depending on the information
to be sent. The information can be sent to a particular ethernet monitor (with
the internet ID of the monitor) or it can be multicast / broadcasted to a group of
ID / ethernet monitors.
The selective region of the desktop can be zoomed and selectively encoded
before sending the information to the monitor.
The network display can be automatically connected to the network for
displaying the information from the computer.

-12-
A flowchart of the working of the invention is shown in Figure 4. When the
network monitor 3 is enabled, the whole screen information / information of the
selected region is transferred to the monitor through ethernet. The system will
then wait for the changes in the display. When the OS changes in the display,
that information is sent to the network monitor. The information can be
selectively coded and sent. In the case of video the information can also be
transferred to the monitor in its native code and can be decoded inside the
monitor. The co-ordinates of the changed information are also sent to the
monitor along with the data for transferring display information.
The monitor 3 receives the data through the internet interface, selectively
decodes the information and updates the information in the local buffer. The
updated local buffer is then displayed.
Providing display information from the computer can be extended to Wifi, WiBro,
Wimax, ATM and any other network technology.

-13-
The parameters of the monitor like intensity, brightness etc., can also be varied
using the method of the invention. The parameters to be changed are sent to
the ethernet monitor and are used to control the various parameters of the
monitor. The resolution of the monitor can be changed by providing suitable
commands or data via the ethernet.
The method of the present invention provides display information to a computer
monitor / display device with network interface. It does not require any OS in
the internet monitor. However the method can be implemented in a system with
an embedded OS. The method can be extended to any physical layer of the
networking technology. The idea can be implemented in any other display
devices with suitable modifications.
The method of transferring data from the computer to the monitor can find out
what is being drawn on to the screen by the OS in the computer using the
provided means.
