The following specification particularly describes the invention and the manner in which it is to be performed

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a system for coke quenching, and more particularly to a system for combined coke quenching operation.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Coke is a solid carbon fuel and carbon source used to melt and reduce iron ore. Coke quenching is a heat recovery system to quench red hot coke from a coke oven to a temperature appropriate for transportation.
In combined coke quenching, both top and bottom quenching facility allows water to get in contact with top and bottom of the coke in a coke car. In bottom quenching, water coming from the quenching water pump passes through the bottom quenching piping circuit and enters the coke car underneath the hot coke through the nozzles. During prolonged quenching operation, the fine coke particles carried through the generated stem enter into the nozzles resulting in chocking of nozzles. Since, the water for bottom quenching is discharged for onwards flow results in reduced head available to overcome the chocked nozzle. As a sequel to this inadequate flow through the bottom quenching facility of coke car underneath the hot coke results in shutting the bottom quenching facility and increased quenching operation time.
Thus, there is need for a combined coke quenching system in the present field of the invention which helps in overcoming the choking of nozzles and hence reducing the quenching time and coke moisture.
OBJECTIVE OF THE INVENTION
These objectives are provided to introduce a selection of concepts in a simplified form that are further described below in the detailed description. This objective are not intended to identify key features or essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended to be used as an aid in determining the scope of the claimed subject matter.
An important objective of the invention aims at providing a system for combined coke quenching in a coke car.
Another objective of the invention is to provide a system with improved bottom quenching facility for a combined coke quenching operation overcoming choking of nozzles and hence to reduce coke moisture and quenching time.
Object of the present invention is not limited to the above mentioned problem. Other technical problems that are not mentioned will become apparent to those skilled in the art from the following description.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to an aspect of the invention, a system for combined coke quenching in a coke car, comprises a water supply unit provided on each longitudinal end of the coke car, and a header passes through the longitudinal axis of the coke car connects the water supply units. The water supply unit having a tank and a pump is connected through a suction line, and the pump to the header is connected through a delivery line. The header has a plurality of distribution lines in a top row and a bottom row, each distribution line has an open end mounted by a nozzle which is protected by a canopy.
Other aspects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, illustrating by way of example the principles of the invention.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The invention will now be described in greater detail with reference to an embodiment which is illustrated in the following figure:
Figure 1 shows a system for combined coke quenching operation, according to an embodiment of the present invention; and
Figure 2 shows a water supply unit provided at each side of a coke car, according to an embodiment of the present invention.
Throughout the drawings, it should be noted that like reference numbers are used to depict the same or similar elements, features, and structures.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The following description with reference to the accompanying drawings is provided to assist in a comprehensive understanding of exemplary embodiments of the invention as defined by the claims and their equivalents. It includes various specific details to assist in that understanding but these are to be regarded as merely exemplary. Accordingly, those of ordinary skill in the art will recognize that various changes and modifications of the embodiments described herein can be made without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention. In addition, descriptions of well-known functions and constructions are omitted for clarity and conciseness.
Figure 1 refers to a system for combined coke quenching operation, according to an embodiment of the present invention. Accordingly, the system for combined coke quenching in a coke car, comprises a water supply unit and a header. The water supply unit is provided on each longitudinal end of the coke car. The water supply unit comprises a tank (1) and a pump (2), the tank (1) and the pump (2) are connected by a suction line (4). The pump (2) is connected to the header (5) by a delivery line (3).
The header (5) passes through the longitudinal axis of the coke car and connects the water supply units. The header (5) can be a hollow pipe having passage which has a plurality of distribution lines in a top row (7) and a bottom row (8), where each distribution line has an open end mounted by a nozzle (9), and the nozzle is covered by a canopy (6). Canopy (6) is particularly provided over each nozzle opening inside the coke car to minimize the ingress of the fine coke particles into the nozzles (9).
The tank (1) provided in the water supply unit receives water from a supply line which can be from a fresh source or from a bottom quenching piping network for reusing the used water. The tank (1) stores water to avoid pump (2) starvation and to avoid water overflow. In a particular embodiment, the volume of the tank (1) can be in the range of 1m3 to 2m3.
The pump (2) provided in the water supply unit delivers water from the tank (1) with additional head to the hot coke by means of the nozzle (9). The pump (2) is provided with a canopy to minimize the exposure of electric motor from getting contact with spillage and leakage water. The power to the pump (2) is fed from the electric loco of the coke car. In a particular embodiment, the pump (2) can be of following specification: flow 200m3/hr to 800m3/hr, head 21mWC and rating 22kW Protection - IP55 4 Pole 3 Phase S1 grade.
During combined quenching operation, the coke car is placed in the quenching tower and the pump (2) transfers water from the tank (1) to the nozzles (9) of the top and bottom distribution lines (7, 8) through the header (5). The plurality of distribution lines in the top row (7) and the bottom row (8) sprays water on top and bottom of a hot coke respectively. The canopy (6) provided on the nozzles (9) protects the nozzles (9) from ingress of fine coke particles into the nozzles (9) and thus minimize the chocking of nozzles (9).
The system of the present invention can be implemented in all coke oven plants for a combined coke quenching operation to overcome choking of nozzles and hence to reduce coke moisture and quenching operation time.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described herein, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction herein disclosed, and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention.
Although there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that modifications may be made thereto which do not exceed the scope of the appended claims. Therefore, the scope of the invention is only to be limited by the following claims.
