"A System For Handling And Separation Of Refractory Waste Of Old Refractory Bricks, Metal Jams And Muck Generated In Steel Making Shop And A Mothod For The Same."

Abstract: ABSTRACT A SYSTEM FOR HANDLING AND SEPARATION OF REFRACTORY WASTE OF OLD REFRACTORY BRICKS, METAL JAMS AND MUCK GENERATED IN STEEL MAKING SHOP AND A METHOD FOR THE SAME. A system for handling and separating of refractory waste of old refractory bricks, metal jams and muck generated in steel making shop, the system comprising of a rotating cylindrical screen (1) installed on an elevated platform; a gear and shaft mechanism coupled with an electric motor for providing axial rotation to the screen (1); a hopper (2) for feeding the waste input to upper end of a tube allowing coarse output like solid refractory brick bats collected from lower end. The metallic jams are separated out from the waste by magnetic separation leaving rest of the material consisting of solid bricks and muck are fed as input material in the rotary screen (1), the said screen (1) are at an angle of 20° from horizontal and rotated along the axis for facilitating flow of materials along the length wherein smaller and fine fractions of used refractory bricks and slag passes through the screen openings and the bigger fraction like refractory bricks comes out as main output material as a by product.

Specification

FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to a System for handling and separation of
refractory waste of old refractory bricks, metal jams and muck generated in Steel
making shop and a method for the same. More particularly, the invention relates
to an improved process completed in two steps, first by removal of metallic jams
from waste by electro magnet and second by separation of solid bricks from fine
muck through rotating cylindrical screen.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The salvaging of refractory waste generated from all three steel making
shops is a concern to separate bricks from adulterated muck containing brick,
slag and metal jams. Earlier, the segregation was done manually which was a
slow and unsafe process. After installing this process we are able to process
around 50 MT per day against the accumulation of 50-60 MT waste per day
safely.
Previously, refractory brick salvaging was carried out in front of slag
dumping area where there always existed the hazard of molten slag explosion,
co gas hazard or hit by moving machinery or fall from height. The unloading of
silico-manganese used to be carried out without any safe access. Brick salvaging
is being done manually. Also, for handling and separation of refractory waste,
huge number of man power was being used.
Hence, there was a need to improve safety, to reduce manpower and to
design a device to improve the efficiency of work.

OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
Therefore, it is an object of inventions to propose a System for handling
and separation of refractory waste of old refractory bricks, metal jams and muck
generated in Steel making shop and a method for the same which is capable of
avoiding manual intervention to improve safety and to improve efficiency of
work.
Another object of the invention is to propose a System for handling and
separation of refractory waste of old refractory bricks, metal jams and muck
generated in Steel making shop and a method for the same, which is able to
reduce the time required for the execution of the project.
A further object of the invention is to propose a System for handling and
Separation of refractory waste of old refractory bricks, metal jams and muck
generated in Steel making shop and a method for the same which is capable of
reducing the manpower.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS
Fig.l: Shows the new device to separate said refractory brick bats and
fines.
Fig.2a - 2f: Shows the different waste.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE
INVENTION
A rotating cylindrical screen (1) of 5m length & lm diameter with holes of
40mm dia in the screen has been designed and installed on an elevated
platform. The screen is at an angle of 20° from horizontal and rotated along the
axis to facilitate flow of material along the length and screening of fines through
the holes. The axial rotation is provided by gear and shaft mechanism coupled

with electric motor. A hopper (2) is provided to feed the waste input to upper
end of the tube and only coarse output (solid refractory brick bats) is collected
from lower end.
First, the metallic jams are separated out from the waste by magnetic
separation. Rest of the material consisting of solid bricks and muck is being fed
as input material in the rotary screen, where smaller and fine fractions of used
refractory bricks and slag passes through the screen openings and the bigger
fraction (refractory bricks) comes out as main output material. These hricks are
then taken away by mechanical means for sale as by product.
The diameter of ylindrical screen is made 1m to meet maximum size of
refractory brick 300mm. The diameter of the screen hole is 40mm which can be
altered depending upon the requirement. Plain barrel of steel with smooth
surface is used for the rollers to withstand abrasion of material flow.
By using the above system, there has been significant reduction in the
manual work and hence has improved safety. The new device helps in faster
execution of the project and there is a reduction of manpower by 80%.

WE CLAIM
1. A system for handling and separation of refractory waste of old refractory
bricks, metal jams and muck generated in steel making shop, the system
comprising;
a rotating cylindrical screen (1) installed on an elevated platform;
a gear and shaft mechanism coupled with an electric motor for providing
axial rotation to the screen (1);
a hopper (2) for feeding the waste input to upper end of a tube allowing
coarse output like solid refractory brick bats collected from lower end;
characterized in that,
the metallic jams being separated out from the waste by magnetic
separation leaving rest of the material consisting of solid bricks and muck being
fed as input material in the rotary screen (1), the said screen (1) being at an
angle of 20° from horizontal and rotated along the axis for facilitating flow of
materials along the length wherein smaller and fine fractions of used refractory
bricks and slag passes through the screen openings and the bigger fraction like
refractory bricks comes out as main output material as a by product.
2. The system as claimed in claim 1, wherein the screen is of 5m length and
1m diameter with holes of 40mm dia for meeting maximum size of refractory
brick of 300mm.
