PREAMBLE TO THE DESCRIPTION
The following specification particularly describes the nature of this invention and the manner in which it is to be performed:
FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to a two piece street light enclosure.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
A two piece street light enclosure comprises a bottom cover and a top cover hinged together at the rear ends thereof. The enclosure further comprises a lever assembly for opening and closing the enclosure and comprising a L-shaped plate one limb of which is fixed in the bottom cover at its one side and the other limb of which is provided with an oblong slot of uniform width along the length thereof. The other limb of the L-shaped plate is also provided with clamping slot at the lower sidewall of the oblong slot in continuity with the oblong slot at its outer end. The other limb of the L-shaped plate is further provided with an over travel slot in continuity with the outer end of the oblong slot. A staple shaped lever is held between the L-shaped plate and the top cover with its one bent portion slidably engaged in the oblong slot against a guiding washer and other bent portion pivoted in the top cover. The enclosure is opened up and closed by operating the staple shaped lever. On lifting the top cover about the hinge at the rear end thereof, the said one end of the staple shaped lever slides out in the oblong slot towards the outer end of the oblong slot about the pivoted other bent portion of the lever in the top cover and allows the top cover to be opened to enable a service person or operator to access the enclosure for repairs and/or replacement of the lamp in the enclosure. The top cover is clamped in the extreme open position with the said one bent portion of the staple shaped lever engaged in the clamping slot. The top cover is closed against the bottom cover by lifting the top cover slightly and disengaging the said one bent portion of
2
the staple shaped lever from the clamping slot and allowing the said one bent portion of the staple shaped lever to slide in towards the inner end of the oblong slot about the pivoted other bent portion of the lever in the top cover. The top cover closes against the bottom cover about the hinge at the rear ends thereof. While the top cover is being opened or closed, if the service person or operator looses grip on the top cover accidently, the said one bent portion of the staple shaped lever slides in towards the inner end of the oblong slot with great speed under the weight of the top cover and closes against the bottom cover with an impact because of the uniform size of the oblong slot. Closure of the top cover against the bottom cover with high speed and force not only one can cause accidents to the service person or operator operating from a height (street lights are generally at a height) but also can damage the rubber gaskets at the sides of both the bottom and top covers. As the oblong slot is of uniform width, a conscious effort is also required to be made by the service person or operator to engage the said one bent portion of the staple shaped lever in the clamping slot.
OBJECTS OF INVENTION
An object of the invention is to provide a two piece street light enclosure which decelerates the speed of accidental closure of the top cover against the bottom cover and allows the top cover to close against the bottom cover slowly smoothly and prevents accidents to the service person or operator and damage to the rubber gaskets at the sides of both the bottom and top covers.
3
Another object of the invention is to provide a two piece street light enclosure which facilitates clamping of the top cover in its extreme open position.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION
According to the invention there is provided a two piece street light enclosure comprising a bottom cover and a top cover hinged together at the rear ends thereof and a lever assembly for opening and closing the enclosure, the lever assembly comprising a L-shaped plate, one limb of which is fitted in the bottom cover at its one side and the other limb of which is provided with an oblong slot along the length thereof, the other limb of the L-shaped member being further provided with a clamping slot at the lower sidewall of the oblong slot in continuity with the oblong slot at its outer end and an over travel slot in continuity with the outer end of the oblong slot, a staple shaped lever held between the L-shaped plate and the top cover with its one bent portion slidably engaged in the oblong slot against a guiding washer and the other bent portion pivoted in the top cover, the oblong slot being tapered in the direction of the inner end thereof and provided with a bent portion at the outer end thereof adapted to provide a guiding surface for the said one bent portion of the staple shaped lever into the clamping slot.
The following is a detailed description of the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which :
Figs 1 and 2 are side views of the two piece street light enclosure of the invention in the closed and open positions thereof, respectively;
4
Figs 3 and 4 are isometric views of the two piece street light enclosure of the invention in the closed and open positions thereof, respectively;
Fig 5 is a view of the other limb of the L-shaped plate of the street light enclosure of the invention;
Fig 6 is a view of the staple shaped lever of the street light enclosure of the invention; and
Figs 7 and 8 show the lever assembly of the street light enclosure of the invention in the open and closed positions thereof.
As illustrated in Figs 1 to 8 of the accompanying drawings, the two piece street light enclosure 1 comprises a bottom cover 2 and a top cover 3 hinged (hinge marked 4) together at the rear ends thereof. 5 is a L-shaped plate comprising limbs 6 and 7. Limb 6 is fitted in the bottom cover at its one side. Limb 7 is provided with an oblong slot 8 along the length thereof tapered in the direction of the inner end thereof (Figs 5, 6 and 7). 9 is a clamping slot provided at the lower sidewall of the oblong slot in the limb 7 in continuity with the oblong slot at its outer end. 10 is an over travel slot provided in the limb 7 in continuity with the outer end of the oblong slot. 11 is a staple shaped lever held between the L-shaped plate and the top cover with its one bent portion 12 slidably engaged in the oblong slot against a guiding washer 13 which prevents the bent portion
5
12 from slipping out of the oblong slot. The other bent portion 14 of the staple shaped lever is pivoted in a bracket 15 which is fitted in the top cover. The oblong slot is provided with a bent portion 16 at the outer end thereof adapted to provide a guiding surface for the bent portion 12 of the staple shaped lever into the clamping slot 9. The reflector, choke, terminal holder, capacitor, pole mounting and pole of the enclosure are marked 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22, respectively. The rubber gaskets at the sides of the bottom cover and top cover are marked 23a and 23b respectively. The various other parts of the enclosure are not illustrated and described in the specification as such are not part of the invention and are not required for understanding the invention. The enclosure is opened an closed in the usual manner. During opening of the top cover when the bent portion 12 of the staple shaped lever 11 reaches the outer end of the oblong slot, it is easily guided into the clamping slot 9 by the guiding surface provided by the bent portion 16. Therefore, the bent portion 12 of the staple shaped lever gets easily clamped in the clamping slot and the clamping of the top cover is smooth and effortless. During the opening or closing of the enclosure if the service person or operator looses grip on the top cover accidently, the top closure moves down and closes against the bottom cover slowly and smoothly because of the deceleration due to resistance offered by the tapered nature of the oblong slot towards the inner end thereof. Therefore, accidents to the service person or operator is avoided and damage to the rubber gaskets at the sides of both the bottom and top covers is eliminated.
