Specification

Technical Field
[0001] The present subject matter described herein generally
relates to a two wheeled vehicle such as a scooter or a motorcycle and particularly relates to an integrated tail cover assembly for said two 5 wheeled vehicle. Background
[0002] Typically, a body frame of a two wheeled vehicle such as a
scooter, is covered by a body cover including a front cover for covering a forward facing side, a leg shield for covering a rider's legs and disposed
10 behind the front cover, a centre cover disposed below a front portion of, a seat for covering a front portion of an engine, a tail cover for covering left and right side portions of said two wheeled vehicle, and the like. The body cover plays an important role in covering the body frame and protecting members underlying said body frame from dust and water invasion.
15 Moreover, apart from covering the body frame, the body cover also adds to the aesthetic appeal of the two wheeled vehicle. Additionally, the body cover, more specifically the left and right tail cover contribute to the aerodynamics of the two wheeled vehicle by guiding a running wind to the engine unit.
20 [0003] Usually, the tail cover is provided as a single enlarged
member so that as many parts of the two wheeled vehicle including the engine unit is covered adequately. Moreover, it is preferred to provide the tail cover as a single enlarged member so that a problem of gap creation

between tail cover members is not encountered and thereby the parts
underlying the tail cover can be completely covered. Thus, a problem of
dust and water invasion into the underlying parts can also be eliminated.
[0004] However, degree of freedom with respect to paintability
5 decreases significantly when the left and right tail cover is provided as a single enlarged member, thereby affecting aesthetic appeal of the two wheeled vehicle. Moreover, moulding of the tail cover as a single enlarged member also proves to be difficult and involves high mould complexity. Additionally, damage to even a small portion of the tail cover involves
10 replacement of the entire member, thereby affecting degree of freedom.
[0005] Also, assembly of the tail cover as a single enlarged
member is cumbersome, often resulting in greater assembly time and thereby affecting productivity. Further, removal or disassembly of the tail cover for servicing requirements is also cumbersome. It is therefore
15 desirable that problems associated with a conventional tail cover be overcome.
Summary of the Invention
[0006] The present invention has been made in view of the above
circumstances.
20 [0007] It is an object of the present invention to provide an
integrated tail cover assembly for a two wheeled vehicle which includes a plurality of cover members so as to increase degree of freedom of paintability.

[0008] It is another object of the present invention to provide an
integrated tail cover assembly for a two wheeled vehicle which includes a
plurality of cover members so as to increase degree of freedom with
respect to mouldability and thereby decrease mould complexity.
5 [0009] It is another object of the present invention to provide an
integrated tail cover assembly that can be assembled with ease.
[0010] It is yet another object of the present invention to provide an
integrated tail cover assembly that can be disassembled with ease.
[0011] It is still another object of the present invention to provide an
10 ' integrated tail cover assembly that adds to the aesthetic appeal of the two wheeled vehicle.
[0012] Thus, the present subject matter relates to an integrated tail
cover assembly for a two wheeled vehicle. According to an aspect of the present invention, the two wheeled vehicle comprises a body, frame, a
15 front cover covering a front portion of the body frame, a centre cover, a seat, a floorboard, an integrated tail cover assembly, and a tail lamp assembly, said floor board being disposed at a predetermined distance above ground surface, with one end thereof being connected to the front cover and another end thereof being connected to the centre cover, said
20 centre cover being disposed below a front portion of the seat and above said floorboard, and said integrated tail cover assembly being mounted to at least said body frame and extending rearwardly and upwardly of floorboard up to said tail lamp assembly in a manner such that the

integrated tail cover assembly can be disassembled as a single unit from said body frame.
[0013] According to an embodiment of the present invention the
integrated tail cover assembly comprising a lower, tail cover member, an 5 upper tail cover member, a middle tail cover member, a rear tail cover member and a central tail cover member is adapted to cover a rear portion of the body frame on both sides thereof.
[0014] An aspect of the present invention provides means for
attaching above mentioned cover members of said integrated tail cover
10 assembly to each other and to other attachment means so as to form a plurality of tail cover sub assemblies and for attachment of said plurality of tail cover sub assemblies to said body frame respectively in a manner such that the integrated tail cover assembly can be disassembled as a single unit from the body frame and a rear fender.
15 [0015] As per an aspect of the present invention, the integrated tail
cover assembly can be easily attached to the body frame without involving the use of large number of fasteners in an assembly line, thereby aiding in reducing assembly time and . in improving overall productivity of manufacturing. Moreover, disassembly of the integrated tail cover
20 . assembly as a single unit facilitates convenience in servicing parts of the . two wheeled vehicle encompassed therewithin. Additionally, when the
^
integrated tail cover assembly is disassembled as a single unit, it is ensured that no gaps are formed between mating parts thereof when the

same is reassembled. As a result, aesthetics of the two wheeled vehicle
do not get affected. Moreover, damage to a small portion of said
integrated tail cover assembly won't warrant replacement of all parts/cover
members thereof.

Further, the upper tail cover member 30U comprises an upper L snap member 42c to receive a slot 43c provided in a rear end of 5 the middle tail cover member 30M so that the same snap fits into the slot 43c. Snap fitting of the middle tail cover member 30M with the upper tail cover member 30U, besides fastening ensures that there is no gap formed between the middle tail cover member 30M and the upper, tail cover . member 30U. In an assembled condition, the middle tail cover member
10 30M forms a substantially middle portion of said upper tail cover member 30U.
[0045] FIG.5b illustrates an exploded view depicting mounting of the
lower tail cover member 30L to the upper tail cover member 30U and the middle tail cover member 30M. As may be seen, a first upper mounting
15 bracket 44d of the lower tail cover member 30L is fastened to a second upper mounting lug 42d (shown in FIG.Sa) provided in said upper tail cover member 30U through a first upper sandwich mounting bracket 43d of said middle tail cover member 30M by means of a fastener. Thus, the lower tail cover member 30L is sandwich mounted to the upper tail cover
20 member 30U through the left middle tail cover member 30M. Apart from sandwich mounting, the lower tail cover member 30L is also individually mounted to the upper tail cover member 30U through an upper mounting hole 44e provided therein. The upper mounting hole 44e is received in a

second 30(H) and third 30(lll) tail cover sub assemblies are at one end
affixed to the floorboard 19 through snap fitting members provided in a
lower portion of the lower tail cover 30L. . .
[0046] FIG.6 illustrates an exploded view depicting mounting of the
15 first tail cover sub assembly 30(1) with the second 30(11) and third 30(111) tail cover sub assemblies of the integrated tail cover assembly 30. The first tail cover sub assembly 30(1) including the tail lamp assembly 40, the central tail cover member 30G and the tail bracket 65 is attached to the second 30 (II) and third tail cover 30(111) sub assemblies through a central left
20 mounting bracket 45a and a central right mounting bracket 45b located at a left end and a right end respectively of the central tail cover member 30C. A fastener is used to fasten said left central mounting bracket 45a and said right central bracket 45b to a left upper mounting boss 431 and a

right upper mounting boss 43r provided on the middle tail cover member 30M, said middle tail cover member 30M being disposed in left and right side of the two wheeled vehicle. Thus, the first tail cover sub assembly 30(1) is mounted to the second 30(11) and third 30(111) tail cover sub 5 assembly. Once the first tail cover assembly 30(1) is mounted to the body frame 11 through the first body frame bracket 11a, the second tail cover sub assembly 30(H) and the third tail cover sub assembly 30(lll) are mounted to said central tail cover member 30C from a rear side of the same.
10 [0047] FIG.7a and FIG.7b illustrate an exploded view depicting
mounting of the rear tail cover member 30R to the tail lamp assembly 40 and the second and third tail cover sub assemblies 30(11) and 30(111) respectively. As may be seen in FIG.7a, the rear tail cover member 30R provided with a pair of rear mounting holes 47aR, 47bR is fastened to the
15 tail lamp assembly 40 through a left and right mounting boss 40mL, 40mR provided therein. Thus, the rear tail cover 30R is secured to the first tail cover sub assembly 30(1) including the tail lamp assembly 40, the central tail cover 30C and the tail bracket 65. Further, as may be seen in FIG.7b, the rear tail cover member 30R is sandwich mounted to the upper tail
20 cover member 30U, along with the middle tail cover member 30M. Sandwich mounting is done at a left and right side of said rear tail cover member 30R. Particularly, said sandwich mounting of the rear tail cover member 30R is achieved by abutting a rear cover side mounting bracket

47f disposed on either sides thereof, to a second lower mounting bracket 43f disposed in the middle tail cover member 30M and fastening the same through said second lower mounting bracket 43f to a second lower mounting lug 42f (shown in FIG.5a) in the upper tail cover member 30U. 5 Subsequently, the integrated tail cover assembly 30 is secured to a rear fender 50 (shown in FIG.2) by sandwich mounting the second and third tail cover sub assemblies 30(11) and 30(111) with the rear fender 50 through the rear tail cover member 30R. For example, in the present embodiment, a mounting bracket member 42g of the upper tail cover member 30U is
10 fastened to the rear fender 50 through left and right mounting holes 47g in the rear tail cover member 30R.
[0048] FIG.8 illustrates an exploded depicting mounting of the
integrated tail cover assembly 30 to the body frame 11. Apart from mounting the first tail cover sub assembly 30(l) to the first body frame
15 bracket 11a (shown in FIG.4) of the body frame 11, through the tail bracket 65, the second and third tail cover sub-assemblies 30(H), 30(lll) are also secured to the body frame 11. As seen in FIG.8, the second tail cover sub assembly 30(H) is secured to a second body frame bracket 11b by fastening an upper mounting bracket 42h provided in the upper tail
20 cover member 30U to the same. A simitar mounting provision on the upper tail cover member 30U provided in the right side of the two wheeled vehicle is used to secure the third tail cover sub assembly 30(lll) to the body frame 11.

[0049] Thus, from the above description it can be made out that the
integrated tail cover assembly 30 is mounted to the body frame 11 at two locations through the first body frame bracket 11a and at one location each through each second body frame bracket 11b, and to the rear fender 5 50 at one location each on either sides of the body frame 11. Therefore, with the removal of fasteners used for fastening said integrated tail cover assembly 30. with the first body frame bracket 11a and the second body frame bracket 11b, and the rear fender 50, the integrated tail cover assembly 50 can be taken down as a single unit. The fasteners used for
10 fastening the integrated tail cover assembly 30 to the body frame 11 can be accessed conveniently by opening the seat 27. Further, once the integrated tail cover assembly 30 is dismantled from the body frame 11, the fasteners used for fastening the integrated tail cover assembly 30 to the rear fender 50 can be accessed conveniently from an upper side of the
15 body frame 11.
[0050] The integrated tail cover assembly 30 assembled according
to the above disclosure, facilitates in the convenient replacement, of cover members thereof. Additionally, the tail lamp assembly 40 and other members of the two wheeled vehicle can also be conveniently serviced.
20 Moreover, the integrated tail cover assembly 30 can be easily reassembled onto the body frame 11 using minimal number of fasteners. Also, since the integrated tail cover assembly 30 is taken down as a single unit, the probability of formation gaps between cover members thereof is

eliminated while reassembling the integrated tail cover assembly 30. Therefore, the aesthetic appeal of the two wheeled vehicle does not get affected.
[0051] Employing a plurality of cover members to cover a rear
5 portion of the body frame 11, as in the case of instant integrated tail cover assembly 30, ensures a high degree of freedom with respect to paintability. Aesthetic appeal of the two wheeled vehicle is therefore enhanced with the increased ability to use different colours. Moreover, the presence of plurality of cover members gives the flexibility to use different
10 moulds and therefore variation in aesthetic appeal of the two wheeled vehicle can also be attained.
[0052] Apart from the above mentioned advantages, the integrated
tail cover assembly has other advantages. For example, the rear tail cover member 30R is adapted to be used as a number plate holder since a rear
15 side thereof has an extending rear wall which can receive a mounting of a number plate. Further, the rear tail cover member is also adapted to receive a rear reflex reflector 55 (shown in FIG.7a). Also, the middle tail cover member 30M is adapted to be used as a light guide to meet future homologation norms.
20 [0053] While the present invention has been shown and described
with reference to the foregoing preferred embodiments, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that changes in form, connection, and detail may
