A Unitary Packaging For A Centrifugal Pump And A Method Of Making The Same

Abstract: A unitary packaging for a centrifugal pump (A) comprising an electric motor housed within a pump housing (B) with a pump foot (C) at the bottom thereof and a suction head (D) and a discharge head (E) at opposite sides of the pump housing. The packaging comprises a carton (2) formed with a mechanically strong and flexible material sheet. The carton has a bottom surface(3), an upwardly extending front wall (4), an upwardly extending back wall (5) and a pair of upwardly extending oppositely disposed side walls (6, 6), a base support (7) on the bottom surface for the pump foot, an end support (8) for the suction head and a side support (9) for the suction head adjoining the end support and top supports (10, 10, 11, 1 1 ) for the pump housing and suction head and a pair of flaps (12, 12) extending from the top surface of the side walls of the carton adapted to be folded and tucked in the carton between the top supports for the pump housing and suction head. PREAMBLE TO THE DESCRIPTION
The following specification describes the invention:

Field of invention
The invention relates to a single sheet unitary packaging for electric motor enclosed in a carton formed from a sheet that provide supports for housing the motor components, the supports being secured by flaps extending from the carton
Background of invention
An electric motor is generally packed for storage or transportation by first mounting it on a wooden pallet using nuts and bolts. The pallet comprises flat wooden pieces held together with wooden battens nailed to them. The motor shaft and corresponding front end shield and the back end shield are covered with corrugated paper. The motor is covered with a polyethylene bag and provided with a corrugated paper closure or sleeve around it. The motor is then located in a corrugated paper carton, covered with a paper sheet at the top and the flaps of the carton are closed against the paper sheet and sealed with tapes. Packing of the electric motor by the above packaging and unpacking of the motor are quite time consuming, besides requiring a lot of labour and effort mainly because of the bolting and unbolting involved. Tool like spanner is required for bolting and unbolting. Average time for mounting a motor on the pallet and removing it from the pallet is 6 and 5 minutes respectively. This is in addition to the time for making the pallet. As the packaging comprises several items cost of the packaging is increased and the items are to be procured from different sources. Also correspondingly large inventory control is required. The wooden pallet is prone to fungal attack and the nuts and bolts

and nails are prone to rusting thereby reducing the storage life of the packaging. Treated wood can be used but this further increases the cost of the packaging. Use of wood also makes the packaging non-ecofriendly. The packaging looks clumsy and is also heavy mainly because of the wooden pallet and associated nuts and bolts. Being heavy, handling of the packaging is difficult. An electric motor of ΒΌ hp capacity mounted on a typical pallet weights about 10 kg. A motor packed in the above packaging is not protected against impact from the sides and top. Also if the motor is accidentally tilted upside down with the motor hanging down from the pallet there are chances of breakage of the pallet and/or bolts under the weight of the motor. This can cause damage to the motor and also accidents. Moreover, packaging by joining different elements of packing material (s) is inconvenient, time consuming, produces wastage and is less cost efficient.
Detailed description
Accordingly the invention provides a single sheet unitary packaging for electric motor, the packaging comprising a foldable sheet that provide top, bottom and side supports that house components of the motor by interlocking means, the supports being enclosed in a carton formed from the sheet and secured by flaps extending from the carton
The invention provides a packaging for electric motor using a single sheet of foldable packaging material. Corrugated kraft paper is advantageously used as the packaging material. Any other flexible material can as well be used as the packaging material.

Moreover, the packaging material can contain additional materials that contribute to strength, flexibility or aesthetic appeal of the package.
The single sheet unitary packaging of the invention provide several advantages. It reduces the labour and cost involved in packing electric motor. Further, being prepared from a single sheet, the packaging eliminates the inconvenience of handling and fastening individual fitments. Moreover, the single sheet packaging of the invention is more compact and substantially reduces the inventory carrying cost as well as the packing time. Apart from this, the packaging of the invention is cost effective and reduces the wastage of packing material
