Abstract: A high pressure fuel pump 10 is described. The high pressure fuel pump 10 comprises a housing 12, and a plunger 14 positioned therein. A cam shaft 16 that is positioned within the housing 12 comprises a shaft portion 18, and a cam 20 defined on the shaft 10 portion 18. A first fork 24 is secured to the shaft portion 18 that comprises a flat shaped portion 26 and a tapered portion 28 extending therefrom. A link element 30, a first end of the link element 30 is secured to the first fork 24 via a first cross link element 34. A second fork 36 comprises a tapered portion 38, and a shaft portion 40 extending therefrom. The second fork 36 is secured to the link element 30 via a second cross link 15 element 42. A gear 46 is secured to the shaft portion 40 of the second fork 36.
Claims:1. A high pressure fuel pump (10), said high pressure fuel pump (10) comprising:
10 a housing (12);
a plunger (14) positioned within said housing (12), said plunger (14) adapted
to reciprocate within said housing (12);
a camshaft (16) positioned within said housing (12), said camshaft (16) adapted
to facilitate said plunger (14) to reciprocate within said housing (12), said
15 camshaft (16) comprising:
a shaft portion (18);
a cam (20) defined on said shaft portion (18), said cam (20) adapted to facilitate
said plunger (14) to reciprocate within said housing (12); characterized in that
a universal joint (22) drive secured to said shaft portion (18), said universal
20 joint drive (22) comprising:
a first fork (24) secured to said shaft portion (18), said first fork (24)
comprising a flat shaped portion (26) and a tapered portion (28)
extending from said flat shaped portion (26);
a link element (30), a first end of said link element (30) comprising a
25 tapered portion (32) that is secured to said tapered portion (28) of said
first fork (24) by means of a first cross link element (34);
a second fork (36) comprising a tapered portion (38) and a shaft portion
(40) extending axially from said tapered portion (38), said tapered
portion (38) of said second fork (36) secured to an opposite second end
30 of said link element (30) by means of a second cross link element (42),
wherein the opposite second end of said link element (30) comprises a
tapered portion (44); and
a gear (46) secured to the shaft portion (40) of said 5 second fork (36)
and adapted to be driven by said second fork (36), said gear (46)
adapted to rotate a mating gear of a low pressure fuel pump.
2. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1, wherein said
10 first fork (24) is secured to said shaft portion (18) by means of an interference
fit between said first fork (24) and said shaft portion (18).
3. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1, wherein said
gear (46) is secured to said shaft portion (40) of said second fork (36) by means
15 of an interference fit between said gear (46) and said shaft portion (40) of said
second fork (36).
4. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1, further
comprising a bore (48) defined through the tapered portion (28) of said first
20 fork (24), the tapered portion (32) of the first end of said link element (30)
inserted through the bore (48) defined through the tapered portion (28) of said
first fork (24), the tapered portion (32) of the first end of said link element (30)
secured to said tapered portion (28) of said first fork (24) by means of said first
cross link element (34).

5. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1, further
comprising a bore (50) defined through the tapered portion (38) of said second
fork (36), the tapered portion (44) of the second end of said link element (30)
inserted through the bore (50) defined through the tapered portion (38) of said
30 second fork (36), the tapered portion (44) of the second end of said link element
(30) secured to said tapered portion (38) of said second fork (36) by means of
