A Vent Hole Defined In A Hollow Bolt Of A Highpressure Fuel Pump

Abstract: A high pressure fuel pump 10 is described. The high pressure fuel pump 10 comprises a housing 12, and a plunger adapted to reciprocate within a pumping chamber defined within the housing 12. A hollow bolt 14 is inserted through the housing 12, the hollow 10 bolt 14 in flow communication with the pumping chamber defined within the housing 12. A banjo 16 is positioned perpendicular to an axis of the hollow bolt 14, the banjo 16 adapted to channel pressurized fuel to the pumping chamber defined within the housing 12 via the hollow bolt 14. A vent screw 18 is inserted through an end of the hollow bolt 14, the vent screw 18 adapted to prevent air that is present within the 15 pumping chamber from flowing out of the high pressure fuel pump 10 via a bore 15 that is defined in the hollow bolt 14.

Specification

Claims:1. A high pressure fuel pump (10), said high pressure fuel pump (10) comprising:
10 a housing (12), and a plunger adapted to reciprocate within a pumping chamber
defined within said housing (12);
a hollow bolt (14) inserted through said housing (12), said hollow bolt (14) in
flow communication with the pumping chamber defined within said housing
(12);
15 a banjo (16) positioned perpendicular to an axis of said hollow bolt (14), said
banjo (16) adapted to channel pressurized fuel to the pumping chamber defined
within said housing (12) via said hollow bolt (14); characterized in that
a vent screw (18) inserted through an end of said hollow bolt (14), said vent
screw (18) adapted to prevent air that is present within the pumping chamber
20 from flowing out of said high pressure fuel pump (10) via said hollow bolt
(14).
2. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1, wherein a
washer (20) is inserted between said hollow bolt (14) and said vent screw (18),
25 said washer (20) adapted to seal said vent screw (18) against said hollow bolt
(14).
3. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1, wherein said
hollow bolt (14) comprises a bore (15) defined at an end portion of said hollow
30 bolt (14) and extending therethrough, the bore (15) of said hollow bolt (14)
comprising a plurality of internal screw threads defined from an end portion of
said hollow bolt (14) and extending therethrough.
4. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 5 3, wherein said
vent screw (18) comprises a plurality of external screw threads defined from
an end portion of said vent screw (18) and extending therethrough.
5. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 4, wherein the
10 plurality of external screw threads defined from an end portion of said vent
screw (18) meshes with the plurality of internal screw threads defined from an
end portion of said hollow bolt (14) and extending therethrough, to secure said
vent screw (18) to said hollow bolt (14), thereby preventing air that is present
within the pumping chamber from flowing out of said high pressure fuel pump
15 (10) via the bore (15) that is defined in said hollow bolt (14).
6. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 5, wherein said vent
screw (18) is secured within said hollow bolt (14) via any other mechanism
that is known in the art such as but not limited to press fitting said vent screw
20 (18) within said hollow bolt (14), and by sealing said vent screw (18) to said
hollow bolt (14) by means of a sealing mechanism.
7. The high pressure fuel pump (10) in accordance with Claim 1, wherein said
vent screw (18) is manufactured from a metallic material such as but not
25 limited to mild steel. , Description:A high pressure fuel pump 10 is described. The high pressure fuel pump 10 comprises
a housing 12, and a plunger adapted to reciprocate within a pumping chamber defined
within the housing 12. A hollow bolt 14 is inserted through the housing 12, the hollow
10 bolt 14 in flow communication with the pumping chamber defined within the housing
12. A banjo 16 is positioned perpendicular to an axis of the hollow bolt 14, the banjo
16 adapted to channel pressurized fuel to the pumping chamber defined within the
housing 12 via the hollow bolt 14. A vent screw 18 is inserted through an end of the
hollow bolt 14, the vent screw 18 adapted to prevent air that is present within the
15 pumping chamber from flowing out of the high pressure fuel pump 10 via a bore 15
that is defined in the hollow bolt 14.
