Additional features and advantages of the disclosure will be described hereinafter which form the subject of the claims of the disclosure. It should be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the conception and specific embodiment disclosed may be readily utilized as a basis for modifying or designing other structures for carrying out the same purposes of the present disclosure. It should also be realized by those skilled in the art that such equivalent constructions do not depart from the spirit and scope of the disclosure as set forth in the appended claims. The novel features which are believed to be characteristic of the disclosure, both as to its organization and method of operation, together with further objects and advantages will be better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying figures. It is to be expressly understood, however, that each of the figures is provided for the purpose of illustration and description only and is not intended as a definition of the limits of the present disclosure.

[0019] The subject invention is related to armrest particularly directed towards shared or common armrest between adjacent seats in the buses and aircraft. Due to the small pitch of the lateral seats in the buses and aircraft, many a times there is only one armrest between adjacent seats. This often leads to discomfort of the passengers due to lack of proper support to the arm. To address this issue twofold armrest is a true solution.

[0020] The present subject matter discloses an adjustable twofold armrest. The adjustable twofold armrest has two arms packaged in the space of one arm rest. It maximizes the usage of limited space and provides support to the arms of both the adjacent passengers. Image 2.a shows how adjustable twofold armrest are packaged. Arms A1 is a bigger arm of the two Arms (A1 and A2). Arm A2 is configured to be placed and packaged inside Arm A1, which is a hollow from inside and accommodates Arm A2 fully. Arm A1 comprises of 5 solid sides and 1 side remains open for operation of Arm 2 which is a solid arm. Adjustable twofold armrest comprises of components as listed in Figure 2a. like Arm A1, Arm A2, Bracket B1, holes H1 to H4, push buttons spring locks BL1, BL2, BL3, rubber bush R1 is mounted on the pivot point of bracket B1 and B2 to facilitate pivotal movement of bracket 1 against support bracket B2, and pins P1, P2, P3. The bracket B1 has lateral protrusions (S1, S2) which are linearly protruded along the longitudinal axis of the arm rest. The protrusion S1 is provided for the movement of pin P2 from hole H1 position to hole H2 position to facilitate the movement of arm A1 from closed position to open position and vice versa. The protrusion S2 is provided for the movement of pin P3 from hole H3 position to hole H4 position to facilitate the movement of arm A2 from closed position to open position and vice versa. There are three push buttons spring locks BL1, BL2, BL3 provided on the arm rest assembly. The push button spring locks BL1 is provided for releasing the locking between the arms A1 and A2. Push button spring lock BL2 is provided for releasing/disengage the locking of Arm A2 to move the pin P3 from H3 to H4 position for movement of the arm A2 from closed position to open position and vice versa. Push button spring lock BL3 is provided for releasing/disengage the locking of Arm A1 to move the pin P2 from H1 to H2 position for movement of the arm A1 from closed position to open position and vice versa. The holes H1 and H3 are provided and positioned on the central longitudinal axis of the arm rest assembly. The position of the holes H2 and H4 are provided on the opposite sides and away from the central longitudinal axis. The movement of the arms A1 and A2 is in opposite side to the central longitudinal axis while opening and towards the central longitudinal axis while closing of the arms A1 and A2.

[0021] Arms A1 and A2 are configured to be rotated along its respective pins P2 and P3 in open position for projecting the arms angularly outside around its pivot pins. The opening of arm A1 is facilitated by rotating it about its pin P2, then unlock the guide path by pressing the BL3 to move A1 from H1 to H2. The guide path is open for movement. Manually Move the arm from H1 to H2 and then lock the pin in H2 by again pressing the BL2 to keep the Arm 1 in open position and vice versa. The opening of arm A2 is facilitated by rotating it about its pin P3, then unlock the guide path by pressing the BL2 to move A2 from H3 to H4. The guide path is open for movement. Manually Move the arm from H3 to H4 and then lock the pin in H4 by again pressing the BL2 to keep the Arm 2 in open position and vice versa.

[0022] Figure 2 shows the 3D representation of armrest in initial position along with pin P2 and P3 locations as shown in figure 3. Arm A1 and Arm A2 are mounted on brackets B1 on protrusions S1 and S2 respectively. B1 with protrusions S1 and S2 is shown in the expanded view in Figure 2a and Figure 2. Arm A1 is mounted on bracket B1 and protrusion S1 at hole H1 and Arm A2 is mounted on bracket B1 and protrusion S2 at hole H3. During operation arm A1 moves from it H1 position to H2 position while arm A2 moves from H3 position to H4 position which are in opposite opening directions of arms A1 and A2 with each other.

[0023] Referring to Figure 8 which shows the initial position i.e., the Position 1 of adjustable twofold armrest. Arm A1 is mounted on Bracket B1 at H1 and Arm A2 is mounted on bracket B1 at H3. The of the holes H1 and H3 are provided and positioned on the central longitudinal axis of the arm rest assembly. The position of the holes H2 and H4 are provided on the opposite sides and away from the central longitudinal axis.

[0024] Arm Movement mechanism for arm A1 to move from holes H1 to H2 (Refer image 8), there is a pin at holes H1, this pin has a pinion at the top edge (the pinion has teeth covering its half circumference). Along the path from holes H1 to H2, there is a guide which has mating rack of pinion. When Arm A1 is moved from holes H1 to H2, the pinion over pin2 moves along the mating rack (rack 1) and facilitate the movement during forward movement. During the backward movement the pinion mates with rack 2 and facilitate the backward movement. Arm Movement mechanism for arm A2 to move from holes H3 to H4 (Refer image 8), there is a pin at H3, this pin has a pinion at the top edge (the pinion has teeth covering its half circumference). Along the path from holes H3 to H4, there is a guide which has mating rack of pinion. When Arm A2 is moved from holes H3 to H4, the pinion over pin 3 moves along the mating rack (rack 1) and facilitate the movement during forward movement. Description of Operation Details:
• Serial No.1 shows the initial position of armrest where arm1 and arm2 are packaged as a single entity.
• To operate this armrest as two individual armrest for adjacent passengers in buses and aircraft, push BL1 which is a spring lock, it will disengage arm1 and arm2 from each other. Thus arm1 and arm2 will be free to be moved from its initial position to final position to act as an individual armrest (Position 1)
• At this point, arm1 and arm2 are locked in their respective positions H1 and H3 through BL2 and BL3 (spring lock)
• Push BL2 to disengage the lock so that the arm2 is free to move from H3 to H4 (Position 2), and when arm is moved to H4, release the button BL2 to engage the lock
• Push BL3 to disengage the lock so that the arm1 is free to move from H1 to H2 (Position 3), and when arm is moved to H2, release the button BL3 to engage the lock
• Position 4 shows the final position of the adjustable twofold armrest
• The movement of arm A1 and arm A2 from holes H1 to H2 (vice versa) and holes H3 to H4 (vice versa) is based on a rack and pinion mechanism. The rack and mating pinion teeth are designed and arranged such that during movement of arm from one hole to another, the teeth do not get interlock and provide smooth back and forth movement.

[0033] The through slots in the bracket B1 are fitted with rack on both the side of slots and mating pinion is attached around the pin P2 and P3. The pinion is as show in figure below. There are 4 rubber bushes one in each holes H1 to H4. The there are two guide place in through slot between holes H1 to H2 and H3 to H4 for smooth and directional movement of pins.
