This invention relates to an adjustable backrest for the driver's seat of a motor vehicle, more particularly, though not exclusively, a three wheeler motor vehicle, such as, an autorickshaw or autorickshaw type vehicle.
An object of this invention is to provide adequate comfort and support for the driver's back while driving the vehicle especially since his back is prone to aches and pains during long hours of driving in the absence of proper support for his back.
As a corollary of the above object, this invention proposes a back rest which is adjustable so that every driver is enabled to adjust the inclination of the back rest to suit his individual comfort requirement.
As a further corollary of the above objects, this invention proposes a simple, yet effective, mechanism for rendering the back rest adjustable, quickly and easily, to save the driver time and effort.
The adjustable back rest for the driver's seat of a motor vehicle, according to this invention, is pivotably mounted with respect to a horizontal supporting member, so as to be rotatable about

the said member, over a predetermined angle; and locking means for locking the said backrest to the said member to hold it immovable at any such angle.

The conventional form of the back rest of the driver's seat is mounted in position (Fig. 1) at a fixed angle, usually, 90 degrees. This fixed inclination of the back rest may not be suitable for all drivers, as each driver may have his own choice of angle depending on his height, girth and the extent to which his body is supple. Such a situation exists despite the fact that the angle of inclination of the back rest is fixed by the seat

designer after taking into account ergonomic factors.
In the embodiment (Fig.2) the back rest is mounted with respect to a horizontal supporting member 1. One end of the said member is located within the tube 2, the other end of the said member being connected to tube 3 by a pivot joint. This allows rotational freedom for the backrest.
After adjusting the inclination of the backrest by the driver to suit his comfort, it can be locked in position by means, such as, a nut and bolt arrangement among others.
In the embodiment illustrated the driver is enabled to tilt the backrest from 90 degrees to 115 degrees.
It will be appreciated that this invention is not confined to the embodiment described and illustrated but that various other embodiments are possible without departing from its scope and ambit.

We Claim:
1. An adjustable back rest for the driver's seat of a motor vehicle, pivotably mounted with respect to a horizontal supporting member, so as to be rotatable about the said member, over a predetermined angle; and locking means for locking the said backrest to the said member to hold it immovable at any such angle.

locking means comprise a bolt and nut
